Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rollin Home From: 8_Pints Date: 09 Sep 01 - 08:26 PM I think someone told me the song was written by John Tams for the National Theatre production of "Lark rise to Candleford" Is this correct? Sue vG |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rollin Home From: 8_Pints Date: 08 Sep 01 - 08:39 PM The song requested by CharlieA is I think the one Noreen mentioned, and was written by John Tams for a theatrical production. Its title is "Rolling Home", as distinct from the shanty "Rollin Home". Bob vG |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rollin Home From: GUEST,The Admiral Date: 08 Sep 01 - 01:33 PM 'Sorry Noreen, it wasn't written by John Tams (or anyone else that we know of for that matter). Stan Hugill has five pages on the song, albeit mostly the Shanty version,(which would turn out to be very long!) But he credits Captain W B Whall as finding it and sure enough it's there on Page 9 of his book 'Sea Songs and Shanties' which was first published in 1910 and he found it in an American book of sea songs published in 1876. I've been singing it for years as a great 'closing' song and I was originally inspired by the singing of Johnny Collins and Jim Magean. One interesting anomily tho', the tune is given in the book is given as 3/4 time when I have never heard it sung in anything other than bog standard 4/4. Rolling Home in waltz time....? Regards |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rollin Home From: Marymac90 Date: 07 Sep 01 - 10:10 AM Mrrzzy, the one you mentioned is "I've Got Sixpence". I'd bet most folks know it. Here's just a taste to jog the memory--I'd bet you can fill in the blanks.
I've got sixpence, jolly jolly sixpence, I've........
I've got two pence to spend, and two pence... (that's how we always pronounced it in the states!)
No cares have I to grieve me, no pretty little girls... Rolling Home, rolling home, Rolling Home, rolling home, by the light of the silvery... Marymac
