Hi there is anyone out there using Cubase to record on their computer? I'd like some help in recording a basic track. I have the sound blaster Platinum pro sound card and enough ram and hard drive space. I bought a midi keyboard to do some string background things and have been able to record midi tracks quite well, except when I save the track and shut off the programme I experience a problem when I try to play it again. The programme doesn't seem to remember the midi voice used in the original. e.g. if I use a string voice in the original it reverts back to the default piano voice when the file is reopened. I'm also experiencing some sync problems with my vocals. I got a little audio mixer to boost the mic line signal and it sounds fine when I'm singing and recording my vocal while listening to prerecorded bed tracks. However when I play back the vocal or any audio track for that matter the recording is slightly out of sync. Can anyone help?...please Den

This is a bugger. Took me ages to find. Pull the window at the left of the edit screen out, it should have a column with midi program numbers in it. If it's not there look in tools (or one of those drop down menus). I think you may have to specify that you want to see this column. Think that's how it works - don't have a copy at the moment, last time I used midi it was on an atari anyway, and cubase was better then. Less stuff to get lost in. Good luck.

The audio midi delay thing is called LATENCY. Depending on your system, this will vary. Try messing around with record and playback buffer sizes. This may help. Also, you'll probably need to optimise windows settings such as virtual memory etc. It's likely to be a bit yrial and error, I'm afraid. Get back copies of Sound on Sound. There's a few good tips in there.

are you selecting the midi voice while recording? otherwise it doesn't get recorded by cubase - so cubase defaults to its default.

Yes, you can do it that way, but it gets a bit confused with multitimbral synths. Fine if you just need one string sound or whatever.

It sounds like you are not saving the patches--haven't used Cubase, but with most sequencers, it is possible to select a sound without actually saving it--It is even possible that you have selected the "voice" only on the synthesizer module--that is, you are sending to Channel I, and whatever voice that happens to be set on your module is the one that plays--Check your manual for info on saving patches--

For the latency thing, there is a trick to using it in the short term. Just before you record, select "Reset all devices" (I think it's under 'options'). This will re-align your soundcard etc. again, so the effect won't multiply and build up.

In the long term, you need to search for better drivers for your soundcard - ASIO 2 drivers are the ones to look for. Soundblaster are quite good for that kind of thing so you should find some at (from memory...) www.soundblaster.co.uk or www.creative.com.

the possible reason for cubase not remembering what instruments where used is that when your saving your song your clicking "save arrangement", this only saves note positions. Always finish by clicking "save song" which saves everything.

Latency is your problem when the audio is out of sync. if you go into your audio pull-down menu and select system, in the top right hand corner you'll see an ASIO selection. u use asio mme drivers to record which have a higher latency than the other option ASIO Directx with give a lower latency but u wont be able to record while using them.

i use a sblive myself and the latency was a real issue until i got my hands on a crack for the sblive with gives u a new mixer window plus the ability to reduce your latency in cubase to 8ms as compared to about 250-700 with the regular asio drivers. check this website; http://atlas.hemmet.chalmers.se/livecenter/showpage.php?name=apsasio which gives u the info u need. this modification isnt supported by the manufacturer and dont blame me if something goes wrong along the way. if do go ahead take care to follow all instructions, if it doesnt work u can just uninstall it and reinstall your normal sblive drivers.

other than that if u get a copy of cubase version 5 and go to your audio system folder again u should see a third asio option which will give u very low latency which should solve your problem.

for more music technology related solutions check the forum at www.soundtraining.com, im not trying to poach customers from this site but its the main site i answer questions from as i work at The Sound Training Centre in dublin, ireland.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have Cubase 5 so hopefully that will rectify my latency problem. Other than that would it help to buy a different sound card. Has anyone used any of the Event cards such as the Darla? Den
