Sorry for bumping this ancient thread. I've come across a version of this song by Anne Byrne (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il0wac3Xq3U&index=8&list=FLNEOsaFPTvnGrtcnigltXGw, which is partly in Gaelic. Does anybody, by any chance, have the lyrics for the bits which are not English?

That was my post above, with the chords. I think the chords in the first line moved a bit to the right. However, I think the average person can sound it after a bit.

The version I know has 'sitting under an ivy tree.' I like that line because one of the first things I noticed when I visited Ireland was that many, many trees have ivy growing up their trunks. So the line is true to nature, but I fear the ivy is not good for the trees.

Possibly means "beauty" or "ever good" in Irish Gaelic. This was the name of three early kings of Munster.

Yvonne Kent, the former pointer breeder from England, imported an Irish dog pointer about 20 years ago, and made him up to full champion (not just show champion) in the UK, and used him as sire successfully for quite a lot of her Lokmadi pointers - his name? Ch. Ballinderry Influence...

A couple of years ago I nosed around the area, attracted by the beautiful "Ballinderry" song. There's also an old Moravian Church, an Orange Hall, and Aghalee is the home of that old Orange song, "The Aghalee Heroes". Yes, there's something interesting about virtually little place, in Ireland (!)

Now as it happens there is a Ballinderry Upper and a Ballinderry Lower and also as it happens I live exactly half way between the latter and Aghalee, and yes, it is very pretty. It was an area hit very badly by the famine with many emigrants from that area. There is also a small church between Lower B and the Lough which was destroyed by Cromwell when he wandered through that part of Ireland. There is also a church which still exists today built by one Jeremy Taylor who was private bishop to King Charles I. After the king was executed the bishop moved to Ballinderry which is probably why Cromwell followed and destroyed the old church.

Just a small history lesson!!

Another one who visited Ram's Island was Wolfe Tone, for many the founder of Irish Republicanism. He mentions the visit in his journals and recalls it as one his favourite memories of his time in Belfast. He was less impressed with Bunting's harp festival. As he wrote in his journal "Strum, strum and be hanged".

Interesting - the version I know skips the verse where she does open her, um, arms, so we're left with not knowing if she did or didn't before he died, which I like a lot... this one (the version in the DT) has less mystery than the one I knew (from The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, I think on the green rebel songs album but I'm not sure).

The traditional song was published by Edward Bunting (1773-1843), the man who almost singlehandedly started the revival of traditional Irish music, around 1809. There are dozens of variants.

The Ballinderry (Town of the Oakwood) in the song is in Co. Antrim. There are a few other places in Ireland all of them bear the same name. One very close to the Antrim one is in Co.Tyrone on the Derry/Tyrone Border not far from Cookstown. Tis lovely to be there as well. !!!!!

Paul Bobby Buzz, Ballinderry an area in Co Antrim on the eastern shore of Lough Neagh. The village of Aghalee also mentioned in the song and Rams Island an Island on the Lough, with the remains of a tenth century Round Tower. Rams Island associated with a sixth century monastic settlement.Slan Ard Mhacha.
