At a John McCutcheon concert, we sang (phonetically) the Russian words to: May there always be sunshine, May there always be blue skies, May there always be Mama, May there always be me. Then we sang it in English, then in sign language. I would love to teach it to my Kindergarten class.......I remember the English words and tune,,,,,,but could someone help me with the Russian words? Thank you so much !

Sharon,

When my nine-year-old was in Kindergarten the kids sang this song at the end of the year assembly (Unfortunately in English only) and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. They had hand signs to go along and sang "mamas" then "papas" then "families". That may in fact be the standard way. I still mist up thinking about it.

Thanks, RE. I should have known to check Rise Up Singing. (I wish I knew the tune to the verses !) Susan, I hope the song has the same impact when we sing it at our Kindergarten graduation. !I must thank all the good folk here. No matter what my question, I have always found the answer here at Mudcat. Is it possible to find a music related question so obscure it would not be answered here? I doubt it.

BTW, Rise Up Singing does have "teaching tapes" with the music to all the songs in the book. But I have delayed buying these until they come out in CD form - it's _so_ much easier to locate songs & learn from a CD than from a tape!

Thanks, Sorcha, for pointing me at this thread. I don't know why anybody else wanted it, but I was hoping to use it on my website (in Russian, Esperanto, English, and/or any combination); now thanks to RS maybe I'll put it on my Yiddish site, too. I learned it as a teenager in high school Russian, and have the first verse and refrain by heart (the second verse all I recall is it ends, or a line of it does, in "chelovek" [human being, formerly known as man]). So I'm also up for the Russian texts of the post-first verses.

The first stanza, in transliterated Russian (I've learned my lesson about the impossibility of reliably making Cyrillic appear in the Mudcat), goes:

Sohl-nyetch-nee kroog, nyeh-boh vo-kroog,
Eh-toh ree-soo-nock mal-cheesh-kee.
Nah-ree-soh-vall ohn nah leest-kyeh,
Ee pod-pee-sall voo-gohl-kyeh:

Followed by the chorus as given in earlier posts in this thread.

In high school we usually sang the following words the second time through on the chorus:

Poost vsyegg-dah bood-yet pee-vaw,

I.e. May there always be beer, wine, vodka, me. That was before I found out I was alcoholic, and got a sense of the implications of that fact. But I still sing it that way, a good ;-) 16 years after my last beer. Detracts a bit from the tear-jerking effect, I suppose, but oh well, that's how I sing it...

Here is the entire text in Russian. The spelling isn't quite phonetic, but I hope that you can figure it out. It was written by a Russian poet named Lev Oshanin.

I always thought that song to be the most saccharine bit of treacle ever committed to melody, in particular the way the obviously adult simulating the cyuuuuutest little girl voice sang it in the Russian version back in the 70's.


I always wanted to take the little girl aside and say: "Honey honey, you'll be around a lot longer than Mama, and it'll sure seem like forever!"

Hello. I've been singing this song since I was about six, and I just finished school last year, so in Summer Break from college, I decided come back to school, and teach some kids this. You know, pass on the knowledge. But I have only heard the Pete Seeger version (in concert). I would love to get either sheet music for the verses, or a Low-Fi recording.
Right now I'm teaching them an improvised tune :). Not very easy. Hassles with timing and syncopation.
So if anyone can send me SHEET MUSIC/RECORDING of this song, I would REALLY appreciate it.

My girl scout troop is representing Russia at our annual Thinking Day. We want to sing the May There Always Be Sunshine song. We would like to alternate English verses with Russian choruses. Is there such a musical version around? If not, does anyone know where we could just get a recording of the music?

It's an EASY tune..you'll be able to teach it after listening to the midi a couple times.

When I decided to use it in my troop, I cut it down to just the chorus and changed it to "always be you and may there always be me".
If you can't find enough information on this thread to make an alternating verse version, you might click the other threads listed at the top of this one to see if there's more info available there.

There are also lots of other GS Appropriate songs in mudcat threads, which can be found by using the search box thingy.
It was a GS thread that lured me to Mudcat..

Do you know where I can get the music only so that we can sing along? We love the tune and don't think the girls will have a problem with it. We just need a recorded version to play as background as they will be singing in a large gymnasium.

I think if I was doing it, I'd ask someone musical to listen to the midi and see if they would be able to record a simple back-up for you to use.
