Subject: What can I sing in public now?
From: steve in ottawa

I was looking forward with only a little trepidation to co-leading a community beach bonfire sing-along on Saturday. Ain't never done it before, but I have a strong voice and know lots of happy sing-along tunes.

After yesterday, I didn't know what I'd do. I thought: - back home again - teach your children well And when I tried those songs I found myself bursting into tears. Though I'm an atheist, I tried Amazing Grace and managed a bit better -- two and a half verses; that's such a comforting song.

I have no idea what to sing, if anyone will show up at an Ottawa beach wanting to sing on Saturday, if people will just want to stand up and talk about that wonderful city: New York. I wish the organizers would just cancel the event. I don't think they will.

The forum search isn't working for me. I tried to look up something re: songs after Colorado high school student massacre, but couldn't get anywhere.

Steve, I think just take your songbooks to be ready, and then sing what makes sense when it all unfolds. Let the people's needs guide you-- you can't know, now, what those may be.

But it is important that you go, and do this. We had just a few hours to get it on radio yesterday that there would be a prayer service last night. Turnout was small... but the ones who came, not as members of the church but because they had heard it on the radio-- they got something they would not have gotten, otherwise. And it also mattered a lot that it was available, even for those who did not come-- it lightened the load just a wee bit.

Hardi was able to lead that service partly because he spent most of the beautiful Indian Summer afternoon riding his bike through our lovely, long valley trails, after an impromptu noonday service while news was unfolding and people needed a place to start dealing with it. When it came time for the evening service, he had the resources to lead it, not get swamped by it. Because he took care of himself, first.

So don't worry about this too much-- just be willing to lead, and to be used as you can be used. It will be fine. I wish I could be there too. Please tell us how it went.

~Susan

And if it ends up being happy carefree songs you sing - don't think of it as trivializing what has happened - because it won't be that - it will be recovery, healing, and renewal.

Let those who are there guide it. They will instinctively know what they need.

MMario makes a very good point. If joyful music is what folks need, if it reminds 'em to breathe, reminds 'em to care and love, reminds 'em that they're alive and fully human, do it. If you have a thoughtful song in your repertoire that is suitable to be dedicated to the victims, living and dead, of this week's horrors, do that too.

I thought about these issues to--the Buckaroos have two gigs this weekend: a coffee-house open mike Friday night, where we can pretty much play whatever we want to, and the Highland Festival at Scotland, South Dakota Saturday night, where we've been invited to play Irish and Scottish music--small stretch for a gospel band, so we're bringing in a ringer from Ontario on mando(lin/la) for some jigs and reels.

Last night, several of us gathered in our living room to practice for the weekend. And it was very healing to immerse ourselves in the joy of music for a couple of hours, to distract us if only for a little while, from the One Big Thing that's on everyone's mind this week. I think performing this weekend will be the same way.

I had already planned to sing "There Were Roses" at both gigs anyway, so I'll be dedicating it to the fallen of Manhattan and DC, and to the prayer for a day, an unclouded day that right now seems so distant, a day of no more terror and war.

Salaam, Shalom, Peace,

Chris

What Jeff and WYSYWI said.

Also, you might try "@hope," @"grieving," "@peace," etc. for a DT/forum search for ideas.

Songs that come to my mind that might be good are:
From A Distance (I actually don't like it, but many love it.)
Let There Be Peace On Earth
Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream
Mary Ellen Carter, and, of course
We Shall Overcome (with whatever verses you make up to fit the situation and mood).
If you want to use humor to help folks get through this, try updating "Merry Minuet."
The group will let you know what works for them, though.

Do it, Steve.

Music releases some good positive energy into the world.
I'm sure people who attend will choose appropriate songs, as will you.

Coming together as a music community, is a healing process. We all need that now.

Steve, don't cancel, whatever you do. Life goes on, and making music together is a big part of that; a celebration of being alive.

Let us know how it goes, please.

(Chris, that was lovely.)

This is my song, O God of all the nations A song of peace for their land and for mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is. Here are my dreams, my hopes, my holy shrine.

This is my song, O God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean, And sunlight gleams on clover leaf and pine. But other lands have sunshine, too, and clover, And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.

O hear my song, Thou God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine.
O hear my song, Thou God of all the nations, A song of peace for their land and for mine.

(tune: Finlandia)

Imagine there's no heaven-- It's easy if you try--,
No hell below us, above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries--It isn't hard to do--,
Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too.
Imagine all the people living life in peace.
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us and the world will be live as one.

Imagine no possessions--I wonder if you can--
No need for greed or hunger, a brotherhood of man.
Imagine all the people sharing all the world... .

Since you admit to being an athiest....relinquish the "job" and turn the "joy" over to a Christian...they always have lots to sing about.

Given your limited, talents, thoughts, desires, it is best to bypass the "obligation."

Wow. Gargoyle, initially, I thought you were just trolling for an argument, but after checking out a few of your other responses, I see I don't understand you at all. You're not quite as stupid as you sound, but you don't always communicate with normal people very effectively, at least in text.

Sincere thanks to the other respondents. First time I've actually noticed posts here from someone I've met and played with. Neat :-)

Our monthly song circle was at my house Friday night, and I wondered how it would go. I put my flag up, and had a candle in the window. It was a normal song circle, with just a slightly different twist to the choice of songs. People tended to choose the quiet, inspiring ones. Toward the end of the evening, somebody led us in "We Shall Overcome." We sang that song softly, but with tremendous power. When we finished, nobody could say anything. We sat in silence for a while, and then sang "All the Good People" and closed with "Goodnight Irene." "Irene" served to soften things a bit, to let us go on.

Joe, I'm looking forward to song circle on Friday. That's a good group of people.

As for yesterday evening, the sing-along on the beach went well, but not in directions that I expected it to go.

I was a little panicked when I wrote that original post, because it wasn't until I tried singing for the first time after the WTC attack that I realized how much emotion I had bottled up inside. I was a lot more upset than I'd known.

At the beach, I was expecting 30-50 people nearby, with some other people hanging around, drinking in the concession area. I was planning to lead about a dozen tunes, all picked beforehand, and to support my co-leader on her tunes. Most of my preparation time went towards familiarizing myself with five of her tunes.

The best advice I got here: bring your songbooks. I did. I got a nifty little light that clips onto a music stand and I brought about 1000 songs, though I only used a couple of my companion's song sheets and one song book. It was a good idea. Originally, I thought the songbooks would just be for moral support, but now I don't think my original choice of songs would have worked very well with the audience, and though I used to have about 400 songs memorized, I don't have that many handy anymore. The songbooks were good.

Things were chaotic. Kids were roasting marshmallows and being noisy. We called for quiet several times, and weren't completely ignored, but still, it wasn't easy. Part way through, happily, everyone got quiet for Amazing Grace, which my companion led wonderfully, but apart from that, we always had stiff competition. I used my really big voice on a couple of songs, and my ordinary big voice on most songs, but my voice just wasn't in good enough shape for two hours of singing, and I'd already used it too much earlier in the day.

The crowd was much bigger than I'd expected -- maybe 125 people? We got the best responses from really well known tunes and kid's tunes. I couldn't tell if anyone was singing along on the less well-known, but still really, really easy sing-along tunes, though I found out later that some people were. I think the crowd had a good time. The event's organizers were really enthusiastic; said that our performance had worked out much better than the professional band last year which had brought an amplification system and had sung Irish tunes. We were asked back, though I wonder if my companion will return next year -- she's really talented, and can project her voice well, but trying to be loud is not her idea of music at all (if she came back next year, I think a small amplifier would be in order).

After about an hour and a half? we took a break and the real singers in the crowd came over to talk. One thing led to another (what a great phrase) and within five minutes I was singing with them. My companion felt that I was really doing a bad thing, 'cause I was facing sideways to the main audience, but I think the main audience only wanted background music -- the people who wanted to sing-along quickly came over and joined us. I went on for about two hours more that way and had a GREAT time.

The songs we sang? Not too much to do with the WTC attack. Amazing Grace. O Freedom. My companion also sang (Gonna lay down my sword and shield) Down By the Riverside and another song of similar sentiment which I can't remember right now. Ouch. I don't' feel that way. I was ready to sing the Star Spangled Banner or the Battle Hymn of the Republic if anyone asked. We somehow missed We Shall Overcome, and I'm simply disappointed by that omission. In general though, the singing was thoroughly non-political. For the past week, when I wake up in the morning, I've checked the WTC news. But what I sang last night was that when you wake up in the morning...you brush your teeth... tsshhh...tssshhh...tssshhh. :-)

Last night, the Sacramento Song Circle met for the second time since September 11. The songs were a little different from last month's session, which happened during the week of the World Trade Center tragedy. Last night, I was happy to see a return of the voices of those who call for peace. The tone of the circle was still a bit subdued. I don't recall anybody choosing patriotic songs - we sang them all last month. Last night, we sang "How Can I Keep From Singing," "Let There Be Peace on Earth," "Blowin' in the Wind," and "Turn, Turn, Turn." Two people announced peace gatherings that will take place in town in the next month.

It felt good. Last month, I got worried by the attitudes of many people. I heard people say that it was so wonderful that we were all united behind our President, that now is not the time to question our leaders. I'm relieved to again hear the voices of those who speak for peace. We must stand united, but unity does not require uniformity. We must never stop questioning ourselves.

-Joe Offer-

My fiancee gets all sorts of interesting information along with her "Working Assets" phone bill. This month, there was a great quote from Bill Schulz of Amnesty International. He said, "Death has come in an instant, and now there is work to be done." (and I can't find the rest of the quote, but it was good.)

More important was a quote from Martin Luther King:
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: ONLY LOVE CAN DO THAT!
