The nicest version ive heard of this stephen foster tune is that of James taylor, also Mary Black of Ireland performs a true great version
but James plays it in D major capo 1, its worth looking at his version ive included here for you
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pyV60kTvEFE

Kate & Anna McGarrigle and friends from youtube on my site with sheet music, I'ts in the key of C' on my site.
If you change to key of D' then yes Bm comes into play.
Hard times

I play it in dropped D tuning and use a IVsharp dim for the first IV chord in the chorus and a minor VI instead of a I chord on the word door, then to the IV chord in the chorus. AS;

D   G#dim
D   A7 E7 A7
D   G Bmin
G D G#dim A7 D.

Geez Malcom - to play in E flat I'd have to capo over my first set of tuners!! How about D sharp? Actually D seems to work fairly well - thanks all for your help.

I am sure that everyone will be able to resist the temptation to post the lyric again; as has been pointed out, we already have it here. The "Lyr/Chords Req" header is a pre-set; there isn't an option to specify chords only. Copies of (presumably) Foster's own arrangement of his song, for voice and piano, can be seen at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music. Here is a link to one such, published by Firth, Pond & Co., 1 Franklin Square, 1854 (can't be sure if that's the date of printing or just of copyright):

HARD TIMES COME AGAIN NO MORE. It is in E flat.

Michael B - I have the words plus a couple of other verses. But am always open to others as I manage to modify what I do to some degree or another. Peace - Steve

Do you still need the lyrics to Hard times? I have them somewhere as sung by Paul Brady.

Thanks - Like someone told me - "Lester Flatt never played anything but G, C, and D, his whole life." So a capo is often a nice way to make things "feel" better. The version I heard that really caught my attention was sung by Norman Blake.

I'm not a fan of my voice either. My wife likes it so who else matters :-) Peace Steve

Hell Sorch, that's great. I should have pulled the thread for Norton myself.....I'm having a hard time getting back into the regular stuff.

And Steve.....Yeah, the numbers are just another way. I love this song and think it SF's best ever. I like it in D because of my lousy voice, but I play C-F-G capoed on the second, because I think C "frets" better.

OK - Thanks, I am assuming the I-IV-V is the same as G-C-D. Steve

It's a pretty basic I-IV-V and you can easily hear the changes I think. There's also a real decnt thread on this one with some additional verses and variants.

I have the song from the data base and know the tune a bit - would appreciate the chords. Any key is fine as I can extrapolate to what fits my voice - Thanks Catters

G'day,
You could also experiment by changing some D chords to Bm. Works for me.

Cheers,

..(D)pause.....(A7)...(D)(G).(D)...(A7).(D)........(A7)...(D)(G)(D)..(A7).(D)
play the chords and sing counting a syllable on each dot
So "Let us (D) pause" and so forth...
