I am trying to find lyrics (sheet music or a MIDI file would be grand as well) for the American folk song, "I Bought Me A Cat." I know it is in the Old American Songs collection by Aaron Copland, but would like to use the tune on Monday and wouldn't be able to get my hands on it in time.

Thanks!

That's it, and it left out the last verse that Copeland left in...about bought me a wife. Do you know the tune, guest? If not holler.

Yes, I do know the tune. Site from Dee45 has lyrics a bit differently from the Copland, but definetly a help to jog the memory. Sorry I am bringing up something that has already been asked a few months ago! Have just found this site and have not been reading long.

Thanks! We'll see how well I can fake it on Monday...

Bought Me a Cat

Bought me a cat and the cat pleased me,
I fed my cat under yonder tree.
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a hen and the hen pleased me,
I fed my hen under yonder tree.
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a duck and the duck pleased me,
I fed my duck under yonder tree.
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a goose and the goose pleased me
I fed my goose under yonder tree.
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a sheep and the sheep pleased me,
I fed my sheep under yonder tree.
Sheep goes baa, baa,
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a pig and the pig pleased me,
I fed my pig under yonder tree.
Pig goes oink, oink,
Sheep goes baa, baa,
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a cow and the cow pleased me,
I fed my cow under yonder tree.
Cow goes moo, moo,
Pig goes oink, oink,
Sheep goes baa, baa,
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a horse and the horse pleased me,
I fed my horse under yonder tree.
Horse goes neigh, neigh,
Cow goes moo, moo,
Pig goes oink, oink,
Sheep goes baa, baa,
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

Bought me a dog and the dog pleased me,
I fed my dog under yonder tree.
Dog goes bow-wow, bow-wow,
Horse goes neigh, neigh,
Cow goes moo, moo,
Pig goes oink, oink,
Sheep goes baa, baa,
Goose goes hissy, hissy,
Duck goes quack, quack,
Hen goes chimmy-chuck, chimmy-chuck,
Cat goes fiddle-i-fee.

The Aaron Copeland arrangement of the song leaves out some of those verses and includes one more as the last:

I bought me a wife and my wife pleased me,

Fed my wife under yonder tree,

Wife goes "Honey, Honey" etc.

'Mudge and I just (a couple hours ago) became the proud, uh, not "owners" . . . of a pair of three year old black cats, Griffin and Sabine. Products of a broken home, needing to find a new home. They're beginning to get acquainted with the rest of our felinities. (Mortimer . . . and, amazingly, the shy feral girls have also been sighted.) Hope the transition/settling in process goes well!

Blimey!! I actually DO play that Justa. Usta sing it in schools. Straight flat pickin "boom cha, boom cha", and like Pete Seeger (I learned it from his banjo book) would draw the animals on the blackboard....t'was fun. Simpler times.

Song very similar to The Watersons' "I Went to Market" (which mentions all the animals -- including the wife -- but not the cat). Is the tune similar?

(I'm trying to type one-handed -- Griffin is on my lap, head buried in mt left elbow, purring. Sabine is hiding out somewhere, watching.)

...and in the version the Watersons do, the wife says "dammit."
