Subject: How do you record internet Radio.

Greetings Catters,

If you're into the net and you havent tried the Radio stations yet, well you're missing out. There is a source of material there which is vry abundant. I listen to Virgin Crossroads and a few other Blues oriented stations and would like to record some of the tracks. Any Ideas.. I could do with a WAV editor that handles large files as well. I can handle getting the wav's into mp3 etc. I just cant figure out how to get the streamed audio saved as a wav.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS Owner and Fender amp are doing very nicely thanks for all the help.

Green Man

Hi, Green Man - have you tried Windows Sound Recorder? It's under programs/accessories/entertainment on your "Start" menu. It may not have bells and whistles, but it does a fair job or recording whatever you hear out of your computer speakers. Once you make a recording, you cna use other software to comvert it to the format you want.
I used it for mixing sound effects for a stage play, and it worked great.

Doesn't RealJukebox handle recordings as well? Of course, it's not free... but hey, if you REALLY want the stuff - and it does give you a help desk to call and yell at if it doesn't work.

if you type your 'need' into a search engine..

"recording internet radio"

you will get MANY hits...including this one

you can also read about why this is nor always easy and why folks like Real Audio would rather it NOT be easy.

for FREE solutions to various multimedia needs, you should always look thru the links at Son od Spy Freeware

I use Total Recorder, found here:

Total Recorder

The registration cost is, I think, $11.95 or $12.95, and it will do exactly what you're trying and more. The link Bill D. lists above looks like another program that'll do the same as well. I've looked at Son of Spy and haven't found anything there that seems to work for streaming audio.

Joe, have you been able to record streaming audio with Sound Recorder? I never have, which is what started me on my quest for a software solution inb the first place. Most of the recorders available use the soundcard and, since streaming audio ties up the soundcard, those recorders don't work with internet sound sources. Programs like Total Recorder work by passing the sound through a software driver then on to the soundcard.

Total Recorder does have a 30 second limit on recording until it's registered, whereas I note that the program Bill D. links to only limits you to 44khz stereo recording and a 30 day trial period. However, I can pretty well assure you that you won't be unhappy with Total Recorder if you choose to register it.

And, BTW, I have no relationship to the Total Recorder people other than that of a happy customer.

I use something called db auxillary input. It's free and will record to wav or mp3 format. Use it for any recording, net radio, tapes, lp's etc.

thanks, Ivan...I think I have heard that name before, but didn't remember exactly enough to find it....now, a search in Google Groups on that name should get a lot of input on it.

Hi, Ivan - yeah, I tested Sound Recorder last night with streaming audio. Mind you, a 3-minute file is 40 MB, so you have to convert the files to something smaller.

Joe, doesn't matter what program you use, a wave file is going to be pretty good sized. I usually encode mine to MP# pretty soon after recording. Interestingly enough, earlier today I tried recording a Mudcat Radio archive with Sound Recorder and it didn't work. Tonight when I tried it, it did. Next question: How do you get the recording time greater than 60 seconds? Mine defaults to 60 seconds when I click on record and stops after 60 seconds of recording time. I can then click on record again and add 60 more seconds, but not without a momentary interruption. I guess I'll stick with Total Recorder since I've paid for it, but, since this question comes up on the forum with fair regularity, a free solution would be good too.

I did download Kernow John's recommended program and tried it. It's also freeware and works, although it's not quite as straightforward as Total Recorder to me. However, for anyone who'd never used either, the learning curve would probably be similar for either of them.

Green Man,

I record out of the PC headphone socket into my mini-disk recorder, with this I can edit any gaps you often get with internet radio. The quality is good enough. I then record to MP3. It seems easy, or am I missing something.

Chris

Chris, I guess most of us that replied assumed the request was about recording directly to hard disk. Of course, your method is certainly an alternative. It did remind me of another feature of Total Recorder though. When using TR to record streaming audio, recording stops when the stream is interrupted and resumes when the stream resumes. At the most, there might be a 'blip' to edit out of the wave file.

Hi There catters,

thanks for the great input. (joke). I looked at all of the resources you guys mentioned and eventually went for Total Recorder which I registered. It does exactly what I want and even will stop recording if the computer pauses for buffering. A great way to get new material.

Thanks again GM
