Subject: Lyr Add: RIDE IN, KIND SAVIOUR From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Sep 01 - 05:54 PM Higginson (1867) has a Civil War time version. RIDE IN, KIND SAVIOUR Ride in, kind Saviour ! No man can hinder me (we). O, Jesus is a mighty man ! No man can hinder me (we). 2 We're marching through Virginny fields, No man etc. And he has his sword and shield, No man etc. O, old Secesh done come and gone ! No man can hinder me (we). Higginson states the use of "done" suggests Virginia. "Been" would suggest South Carolina (farther south). He suggests that "we" is more in keeping with "the usual head-over-heels arrangement of their pronouns." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: RIDE ON KING JESUS/NO MAN CAN HINDER From: masato sakurai Date: 22 Sep 01 - 03:08 AM There's a recording of "Ride On, King Jesus" by William Brown, Terrel Conley, Eugene Blacker, and Alvin Brown (rec. State Penitentiary, Huntsville, Walker Couty, Texas, 5/13/1939) in The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip. This seems to be a different song. Their performance is much more different from concert spiritual singers' style. Masato

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: RIDE ON KING JESUS/NO MAN CAN HINDER From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Sep 01 - 12:33 PM Masato, Good news-- actually, there are a lot more. If you go to the main page of the Lomax project and then search by AUDIO SUBJECT, a long list pops up including spirituals. (Some of the other categories have spirituals hiding in them too I think.) Once you click SPIRITUALS, you get a list of 131 items. Click one and it will give you section (in the field notes) where some or all of the words are located, with commentary. With two windows open at once it is easy to zip out lyrics. I'll post it in the LINKS thread when I get a chance. I think I will be busy "plumbing" in the Lomax material for a long time! ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: RIDE ON KING JESUS/NO MAN CAN HINDER From: wysiwyg Date: 22 Sep 01 - 01:12 PM I am going to print it and save all those recordings too. I'll add the titles to the index I am working on, too; it almost constitutes a songbook. ~S~ |
Subject: Add: Ride On King Jesus (Palm Sunday version) From: GUEST,WYSIWYG Date: 19 Mar 05 - 10:53 AM Here's our Palm Sunday version for tonight. ~Susan ================================================ RIDE ON KING JESUS ("No Man Can Hinder Me!") Traditional Negro Spiritual. Learned from the singing of the Park New Choir (France) and of Leontyne Price on RCA CD, "The Essential Leontyne Price; Spirituals, Hymns & Sacred Songs," Adapted, edited, and aranged for The Good News-Goodtime Band (C) 2005 by Susan O. Hinton. REFRAIN: Ride on, King Jesus- "No man can hinder Me!" Ride on, King Jesus, ride on! "No man can hinder Me!" 1. King Jesus rode on a milk-white horse- "No man can hinder Me!" Into Jerusalem He did cross. "No man can hinder Me!" 2. The people gathered all around- "No man can hinder Me!" To greet the King without a crown. "No man can hinder Me!" But He is 3. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords- "No man can hinder Me!" Jesus Christ, the first and last- "No man can hinder Me!" 4. Oh Hallelujah to the Lamb- "No man can hinder Me!" Came to die for every man. "No man can hinder Me!" SH |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST,Azizi Date: 19 Mar 05 - 11:50 AM WYSIWYG, We sang this version of this song in my African American Baptist church in Atlantic City, New Jersey {1950s-1960s}: chorus: Ride on, King Jesus Ride on King Emanuel Ride on King Jesus No man can not hinder Thee. Ride on, King Jesus Ride on King Emanuel Ride on King Jesus No man can not hinder thee. King Jesus ride a milk wide horse No man cannot hinder Thee The Jordan river He did cross No man cannot hinder Thee chorus [as: I went to the valley but I didn't go to stay No man cannot hinder Thee My soul got happy and I stayed all day No man cannot hindr thee If you don't believe I been redeemed No man cannot hinder Thee Just follow me down to Jordan stream No man cannot hinder thee Chorus add other floating verses that fit this pattern; sing uptempo "No man can not hinder Thee with "Thee" referring to Jesus seems to make more sense than "me" or "we". But I'm sure to a large extent this because that is the way that I always heard the song sung . |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST,Azizi Date: 19 Mar 05 - 11:53 AM Please disregard that [as before the second verse above it's just gobblyglob that I didn't properly delete. If it could be removed it would be helpful..if not sorry. Best wishes, Azizi |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST,WYS Date: 19 Mar 05 - 12:01 PM Thanks, Azizi. I think this is one of those songs where multiple layers of meaning crowd together in the elegantly sparse words-- like so many of the spirituals. "No man can hinder me (Susan) because Jesus is my King" and "No man can hinder Me (Jesus)" because the Lord WILL have His way with us, and "No man can hinder Thee (Jesus or the Father)" because God is God and God don't never change-- God is God, and I'm not. All of that in one line, for me, when I sing it. Thanks for enlarging my view to include a glimpse of your experience, too. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: wysiwyg Date: 12 Dec 06 - 03:44 PM I believe there are some misheard/typos in the above post: farely well farely well is usually sung and transcribed as fare thee well, fare thee well. In Im gonna lay down this word, "thisword" is usually sung and transcribed as "this sword" ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST,Laikhe Jones Date: 30 Dec 07 - 08:29 AM We can also be reminded just as the slaves were reminded that the same King Jesus who died for the rich is the same King Jesus who died for the poor. The lyrics tell the message of survival of Blacks on their journey from slavery to emancipation through song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: wysiwyg Date: 30 Dec 07 - 11:15 AM Thanks, Laikhe Jones. When I lead songs like this one in worship, I try to remind people as I introduce them that there are many rich opportunities for interpretation; I invite them to think on the song, and come up with applications just like yours that might be something for them to consider in daily life. I wondered if you know about our African American Spirituals permathread where there are background essays on spirituals in general, as well as links to even more songs and discussions about them: CLICK I look forward to more commentary from you in the threads linked from that permathread, ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: Azizi Date: 30 Dec 07 - 11:30 AM I also would like to give a shout out to guest poster Laikhe Jones. I'd love you to join Mudcat as we very much need more African American voices on this forum. Joining is easy. Just click on Membership in the top right hand corner and follow the steps outlined there. In any event, I hope to see more posts from you as either a guest or a member! {Ms} Azizi |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: wysiwyg Date: 30 Dec 07 - 11:32 AM Amen, and also know that while not all members identify their ethnicity, no one of African heritage will be here alone. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST,mmaletswya Date: 23 Jan 08 - 08:36 AM Hello and thanks for this nice blog. This is my favorite song. As an African American and Christian it makes me so hopeful to hear it. This is the song that I want people to sing at my funeral service--thanks to you, they'll have the words to th song. Anyway, I was wondering where I can find a recording of it. Any ideas? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: wysiwyg Date: 27 Jan 08 - 02:24 PM mmaletswya, Welcome to Mudcat. I hope you have discovered our African American Spirituals permathread where hundreds more songs thought to be (or not) are catalogued with links to discussions of the individual songs. Park New Choir recorded it (it's a French choir that sings in English with a lovely French accent), in a formalized choir arrangement (link in first post). You might find a purchasable recording of this one at Amazon under any of the operatic greats who have recorded spirituals in a concert-stage style; it may also appear on a Fisk Jubilee recording in an early choral harmony arrangement. If you do find a purchasable version, I hope you will post a link to it here. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: wysiwyg Date: 27 Jan 08 - 02:30 PM Oops! I find that Park New Choir has moved their site: La chorale du Park New Choir a un nouveau site à l'adresse http://www.parknewchoir.org But that URL seems also not to work. However, there's always the Leontyne Price recording, also linked above, or the LOC Lomax link also above. You will find that at Mudcat, links are inserted in many posts and sometimes not immediately visible as links-- but if you look with a slow eye, the whole site is peppered with elegant little clues to additional resources here and on the web. ~Susan |

No Man Can Not Hinder Me Gonna be nobody there to turn me out No Man Can Not Hinder Me In that great getting up morning fare thee well, fare thee well (2x) No Man Can Not Hinder Me |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Ride On King Jesus / No Man Can Hinder Me From: GUEST Date: 28 Feb 19 - 11:57 AM I heard an arrangement that included the line "trees are bending". I've searched through all the lyrics I can find and can't find this line in any of the posted lyrics. Where did it come from? what are the other lines with it -- it seems there are three but I can't understand the first two. |
