Subject: Lyr Add: BELLRINGING From: Date: 09 Feb 98 - 05:57 PM Here goes and I hope this first attempt at posting a song and tune will work. X: 1 T:BELLRINGING M:3/4 L:1/4 Q:120 K:D A| dBd|cAc/2c/2|GBA|EGF|DFA|GBA|EGF|D2A/2A/2|dBd| cAc|GBA|EGF|DFA|GBA|EGF|D2||A/2A/2|dBc|A2A|dBc| A2A|DFA|GBA|EGF|D2A/2A/2|dBd|cAc|GBA|EGF|DFA| GBA|EGF|D2 BELLRINGING One day in October, neither drunken nor sober, O'er Broadbury down I was wending my way, When I heard of some ringing, some dancing and singing, I ought to remember that Jubilee Day. 'Twas at Ashwater Town the bells they did sound They rang for a belt and a hat laced with gold But the men of North Lew rang so steady and true, That there never was better in Devon, I hold. 'Twas misunderstood for the men of Broadwood Gave a blow on the tenor that never should have been But the men of North Lew rang so steady and true, That a difficult matter to beat 'em 'twould have been. Those of Broadwood being naughty, they said to our party We'll ring you a challenge again in a round We'll give you a chance in St. Stephen's -by -Launceston (Pronounced Lawnson or Lanson) A prize to the winner, a note of five pound. 'Twas at Callington town ...etc When the match it came on at good Callington, The bells they rang out o'er the valleys below And the old and young people, the hale and the feeble, They came out to hear the sweet bell-music flow. Those of Broadwood once more were obliged to withdraw, They were beaten completely and done in a round. But the men of North Lew rang so steady and true That no better than they in the West may be found. As Ian Marshall a local Cornish sage says in his book, there are a few puzzles here! It doesn't seem possible that the tenor bell would be rung 'out of order' in rounds, change-ringing is more complex but not used for contests. Why did the re-match take place at Callington and not at Launceston as scheduled. But never mind it's all in Cornwall eh? I hope you enjoy regards from Baz. |
Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Date: 09 Feb 98 - 06:02 PM Didn't quite come out as intended. Seems like I've got trouble with the carriage returns! What I did was to copy from my text prog and paste into the message box. What could I have done better? Recards Baz |

Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Barry Finn Date: 09 Feb 98 - 10:24 PM Only the part about the men of North Lew rang so steady & true, after 15 yrs I'm lucky to remember my name, & I don't have a clue about ABC or that kind of stuff, I just now got past a simple 1 step command, 1st time. Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Feb 98 - 12:18 AM Well, darn it, Barry, could you play it as a MIDI if I e-mailed it to you? It's a great tune. I had to put in the carriage returns to play it, but it sounded wonderful. Send me a private message with your e-mail address if a MIDI will help. Baz - I hope it's set up now the way you wanted it. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Dave Earl Date: 17 Nov 98 - 06:54 PM People I know have been singing this for years. I thought it was titled "The Devon Bell Song". Have I been wrong all these years? Dave earl |
Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Barry Finn Date: 21 Nov 98 - 01:34 AM Joe, by the way thanks for the above offer (te, he, he smile), if a midi is what's in the DT that says click here to play, yes, I can play a midi, but I suspect it's a little more than just that. It is a beaut of a song. Barry |
Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: GUEST,keith acheson of hertford Date: 07 Oct 00 - 09:30 AM This is one of my favorites. Most of the places are surely on the Devon side? Also Northlew is one word. Sing up Keith |
Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 07 Oct 00 - 09:49 AM Yes; it's a Devon song, though three of the placenames are over the border. It was collected by Sabine Baring Gould (I think) from William George Kerswell of Two Bridges, Dartmoor, and first published in Songs of the West (various editions between 1889 and 1905). Malcolm |
Subject: RE: LYRICS ADDED BELLRINGER From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Oct 00 - 02:30 PM These over the border bellringing battles are quite common - I got involved with a long running Somerset/Dorset one, in which two ringing captains were vying with each other to see who could ring the most quarter peals in the other county. Dorset won. Never made a song about it though. LTS |

Subject: RE: Origins: Bellringing / The Bell Ringing From: Harry Rivers Date: 25 Oct 22 - 04:06 AM In the opening message: "As Ian Marshall a local Cornish sage says in his book, there are a few puzzles here!" Does anyone have a title for that book? Harry |
