I once heared Hedgehog Pie segue (is that the word?) from a jig into Goodbye to Jane by Slade, very effective and great fun. I suppose lots of people have heard that arrangement of Hey Jude by Da Dannan, playing in many different traditional modes.

This set me thinking and trying to play rock and pop tunes in some sort of dance mode. I can sort of 6/8 Rave On and I found that Green sleevse 6/8s into a Morris Tune but I suppose most people know that.

Most Rock and pop tunes loose their small lives by this process but sometimes it works.

Has anybody else tried this? If so name that tune!

My wife and her band, who often play for contra dances, once worked the theme song from "Leave It to Beaver" into one of their medleys. Not exactly rock OR pop, but doing goofy stuff like this can liven up contra dances, which can become quite boring for the musicians.

We used to do "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" as a fiddle tune.

There's a medieval dance tune called Chanconetta Tedesca that we've inserted all sorts of things into -- Stairway to Heaven, The Sound of Silence, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Gilligan's Island.

I once worked out a an arrangement of Locomotive Breath for Celtic harp.

I work in a music store with a guy who is a cittern fanatic. I like to get a grin out of him by playing old pop tunes on the cittern, with cittern-like arrangements. So far we've covered Your Song, Spooky, I'm a Believer, Summertime, Come Together, Let It Be, and more that I can't remember right now.

We play the jig "Darby Kelly" as part of a ceilidh dance set, Status Quo recorded this under the title "Burning Bridges"

Not that long ago I swear I heard a "Nashville" sort of group play and sing Pink Floyd' "Another Brick In The Wall" Probably on BBC's Radio 2 Country Programme.

I'm not entirely sure that this is relevant, but Simple Minds turned "She Moved Through The Fair" into a Number One single by changing the lyrics and calling it "Belfast Child"!

Didn't the Electropathics do a ceilidh at Warwick FF 1986? Well I think it was them, but the tunes were rock and the dances ceilidh. When I spoke to a band member he said it was not a one-off.
Bananas squeeze all sorts of tunes to a very dancable rhythm. eg "Nellie the Eliphant" and Mozart's Horn Concerto and a whole raft of rock & pop tunes.
Very dancable band.

Used 'copacabana" for the first part of the Virginia Reel... worked well too......lol and most tunes from "Grease" work for the Heel and toe polka!! (eg summer nights, you're the one that I want.....)

I think De Dannan's version of Eleanor Rigby as a jig is just Brilliant - however their latest efforts to pop up their act on the Welcome to the Hotel Connemara is just DIRE!!! Has anyone heard it? Think the worst track award has to go to Bohemian Rhapsody tho' they are all pretty dreadful.

Lick the tin do cracking versions of 'Can't help falling in love with you' and 'Hey Joe' on 'blind man on a flying horse. Also Fairport Convention's version of Dylan's 'If you gotta go go now' (only cos I can't remember the french words) is also quite spliffin'.

Appropiate for Halloween, we've teamed "Funeral Dance of the Marrionettes"(Alfred Hitchcock's theme)as a jig with the theme song of "The Munsters" as a reel. Not pop or rock, but fun for a halloween dance.

I like the DeDanaan CD... maybe I'm just a sicko... but I think their version of "love hurts" is gorgeous......

I like the sound of "don't stop the cavalry" it was a great tune.......lol
