My son has asked me what I would like played at his wedding for us to dance to. I have not listened to popular/comtemporary music for 15 years. I have a lot of folk music, but nothing seems appropriate.

I have John McCutcheon's "Turn Around" which first sings about being a young girl, but then mentions young man. The only other ideas I have would be an instrumental waltz and for that I have Jay Ungar and Molly Mason's "The Lovers' Waltz."

There must be other stuff out there. Should I just let the DJ pick something out and shuffle around like people seem to dance these days??? I hope some mudcatters can be of help!

Thanks Penny

When I was a MOTG my son just grabbed me to "sway" a little at the end of the FOTB and the bride's dance to "My Girl." My equilibrium is soooooo bad about all I can do is sway while someone holds me up! Seriously, most of the weddings I've been to, the MOTG dances with her son quietly and coming in late after the bride starts dancing with her father.

Is this the little boy I carried?
Is this the little girl at play?
I don't remember growing older.
When did they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn't it yesterday when they were small?

Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Swiftly flow the days,
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming, even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset,
Quickly fly the years,
One season following another,
Laden with happiness and tears.

Now is the little boy a bridegroom,
Now is the little girl a bride.
Under a canopy I see them side by side.
Place the gold ring upon her finger,
Share the sweet wine and break the glass.
Soon the full circle will have come to pass.

Sunrise, sunset, ... etc.

What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way? Now they must learn from one another day by day.

Sunrise, sunset ... etc.

If you take a trip to:

and navigate to the songs channel, you'll find suggesions for about twenty mother-son songs, including sound clips.

A good site to bookmark!

Thank you all. I'd like to hear another version of Sunrise, Sunset other than the Fiddler on the Roof one. The Ultimate Wedding Site is very helpful with great ideas. I needed some options! Penny

There is a song in "Mame" from auntie to nephew that might suit the occasion, I think it's called "My Best Beau".

Hi, Penny.......

Can you give us some guidelines here? I mean, is this for a totally straight-laced mother-son dance, will father-daughter be dancing at the same time, etc.?

I'm not suggesting anything raunchy (OK, we'll nix "Redneck Mother"), but is it OK to have a little fun? Actually, the first thing that popped into my head was "Cover of the Rolling Stone" (Dr. Hook, via Shel Silverstein).

So please let us know - romantic? traditional? tear-jerker? danceable? all of the above?

What's your pleasure?

Also, think about 86-ing the D.J. Good live music is so much more fun, because the band can get into the show and react to the crowd. Can't stand it when the D.J. thinks HE is the show, not the B&G.

Hi Tiger,

My time ran out. They didn't give me give me very long--needed my decision tonight. Anyway, they are a country music lovin' bunch. I'll probably be the most straight-laced there, and I don't care for DJ's either. The Wedding is Saturday.

All I had on hand were Jay Unger & Molly Mason "Lover's Waltz" (instrumental), John McCutcheon's "Turn Around," a pretty number by Jeannie Fitchen (a Florida folk musician), or what I finally went with which is Off A Bill Staines kids' CD that had a very pretty lullaby on it. Guess it's a bit different, but as I don't really listen to commercial radio or popular music, it is more my speed. We practiced tonight and I was amazed that my son could waltz so well! Maybe we will add a bit of class to the event.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Penny
