My mother, who was from the Ozarks, used to sing a little song: Come, said the wind to the leaves one day. Come to the meadow and dance and play. Put on your coats of silver and gold, for summer is over and the days grow cold.

She was born in 1917 and her mother used to sing it to her. Anyone else ever heard it? Thanks.

Click here and scroll about 2/3 of the way down to find the song; it's a sweetie. I teach it to my kindergartners; this year I refreshed it for my first graders and one said: "This is the greatest song!!

Subject: Come, said the wind... ADD Come Little Leaves^^
From: SINSULL
Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:32 PM

These lyrics came to me from Mrs. zezam, a mudcatter who left a while back. They were my favorite as a child. Enjoy

"Come, little leaves," said the wind one day,
"Come o'er the meadows with me and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold,
For summer is gone and the days grow cold."

(I learned it as:
Come said the wind to the leaves one day
Over the meadows with me and play)

Soon as the leaves heard the wind's loud call,
Down they came fluttering, one and all;
Over the brown fields they danced and flew,
Singing the glad little songs they knew.

"Cricket, good-by, we've been friends so long,
Little brook, sing us your farewell song;
Say you are sorry to see us go;
Ah, you will miss us, right well we know.

"Dear little lambs in your fleecy fold,
Mother will keep you from harm and cold;
Fondly we watched you in vale and glade,
Say, will you dream of our loving shade?"

Dancing and whirling, the little leaves went,
Winter had called them, and they were content;
Soon, fast asleep in their earthy beds,
The snow laid a coverlid over their heads.

~ George Cooper

Reminds me of the AA Milne poem, where am I going? I don't quite know - over the hills where the pine trees blow - up on the hill where the kingcups grow - anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. One of my faves. I'd love to learn this song.

Thank you, Sinsull! This is my very first visit to this site and I was amazed at the results! My musical talent consists entirely of being a great audience. You sound like a fun bunch of people. Now if I can just find out who George Cooper is....

Among other things, a poet beloved by Stephen Foster. Foster wrote tunes for a lot of George Cooper lyrics.

The tune I have is an adaptation of one by Elisabeth Lebret. I found her version in her little book, "Pentatonic Songs for nursery, kindergarten, and grades 1 and 2" Its copyright date is 1985 from the Waldorf School Association of Ontario.

Animaterra, would you please send it to me, too. I love this poem, beautiful imagery. I'll bet it would sound great on dulcimer. Thanks, darlin'.

Welcome to the Mudcat, Glenda. It can get a bit madcap around here but generally we are a harmless and friendly lot. If you get a chance take a look at the FAQS and learn the benefits of becoming a member...it's FREE!*smile*

This page (click), has a tune in the background. Is it the right tune. It attributes lyrics and music to Thomas J. Crawford, but the original source of the lyrics is one I've learned not to trust. Anybody have solid copyright and songwriter information?

I learned it this way from my mother and grmom.

Come little leaves said the wind one day come over the meadows with me and play.
Put on your dresses of red and gold summer is gone and the days grow cold.
Dancing and flying the little leaves went winter had called them and they were content.
Soon fast asleep in their earthly bed the snow layed a blanket over their head.

Here's a youtube with a pretty melody, though I think it might be a little too fluttery to teach to young children.
