Got a gig at the Valley Folk Club, Pontardawe (near Swansea) on Friday.

If anyone wants to come along, that would be great.

Let's see if I can remember the words this time...

EJ

Might see you there - I live 3 miles away. But as I am working on London, I might not be back in time. Is it still at the Ivy Bush? (I haven't been for some time)

I'm up in Aberystwyth until who-knows-when. I'll try, but I suspect it won't happen.

Break a leg!

A note for non-UK members, the Valley Folk Club has produced performers such as Mary Hopkin and Max Boyce in the past.

Just spoken to Martin Ellis... Yes it's at the Ivy Bush. Upstairs room. Doors about 8.30 ish (? - did i remember that right?) and kick off at 9.

And I've just been and got some shiny new guitar strings for the occasion.

Hope to see you there!

Jon

Good luck Jon. You will find a friendly bunch at The Ivy Bush.

I won't be able to get there I'm afraid.

The Valley Folk Club was founded back in the 60's.

It has come a long way since then, having launched the internationally renowned Pontardawe Festival in the early 70's. Maybe someone will give the exact date??

And as Pavane pointed out, Mary Hopkin and Max Boyce were regulars there.

Have fun and good luck! Whatever words you sing, sing 'em loud(ly)!

From across the "pond" in PA,

Sorry, previous engagement - which is a pity as I work in Llansamlet - and have to be in Caerphilly at 8.00.

But best wishes !

Incidently mntioning the Rugby result last week end would not be considered tactfull.

Also beware the Heads of the Valley Road (A465) - its 3 lanes from Tower to Abergavenny

Gareth

The festival started in the mid-70's, but I don't know exactly when, because I was living abroad at the time. It was preceded by a series of concerts organised by the late Brian Harries (I think that is the right spelling), who used to run the Valley Folk club. Concert guests included Shirley Collins, Fred Jordan and Barry Dransfield (it was SUPPOSED to be the Dransfields, but only Barry turned up).

The club was always know for enthusiastic participation in choruses, but I haven't actually been for some years, so I don't know if that is still the case.

I probably WON'T be able to make it tonight, as I don't know what time I will be leaving London.

Good luck

Mary Hopkin has been known to turn up at Nettlebed FC(Mon VH) but apparently declines to perform in prefference to encouraging her daughter to sing.
Good luck wish I could make it but it must be 2.5 hours away.

The first Pontardawe festival was in August 1978 and at that time the folk club was in the Dynefor.

I have been to Nettlebed a couple of times myself (Played some Welsh tunes there once) Also saw Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp there some years ago.

Wish I could persuade my daughter to sing in public - she has a good voice, but is more interested in horses and her new baby son. Also my youngest son - interested in the local amateur operatic society, but only working backstage, even though a born performer. No stars here to keep the old man in comfort in his declining years!

Sorry, Jon, I couldn't make it tonight - took me 5 hours getting home from London. Hope it goes well (You should be on soon!)

(I changed my mind and did go down for the second half.)

Refreshing to hear some different versions of songs, and the audience were noticeably impressed by the(unaccompanied) False Bride.

Look forward to seeing you again, and keep up the good work.
