Subject: Captain Cook Festival From: Alio Date: 17 Oct 01 - 06:52 AM I'm off to Whitby on October 26th for the Captain Cook Festival with the Shellbacks. Never been to this one before. Does anyone know what it's like? Are there any other Mudcatters going? Where are the best places to go? |

The old side (east) is a delightful place to wander with lots of pubs and shops (Black Horse is one of the best). The other side has typical small seaside attractions and some nice pubs including the Elsinore , The Angel , Plough and what used to be the Cutty Sark but is now (alas) renamed the Tap and Spile. Best Fish and Chips in the UK can be had from the Magpie Cafe (IMHO). Hope you enjoy it...we will be there Nov 2nd and 3rd for the Goth Festival (Dracula is linked to Whitby). Spot |

If you can be bothered to queue go to the Magpie Cafe it is amazing. I have been going to the Shanty Weekend for several years. There will be several Mudcatters hold up in a secret location on the weekend of 27th October and taking part in the singarounds, usually in the Pier, Endeavour and Plough pubs. I've always enjoyed it immensely, and usually Michael from Swansea is around with Baggyrinkle. On Sunday the normal folk club in the Tap & Spile is most enjoyable and hopefully Mandomad and Jingle will be there. Aardvark and his missus will definitely be around and let's face it Tyke is always there! Just a few Mudcat names you are likely to come across together with several others including myself. |

Well the first time I went I was Shang Hide into Coblers Monday. When sobered up the lads told me what a great weekend I had so I've been going ever since! The truth is the Captain Cook Festival will be what you make it! Please do not worry if you over indulge in Whitby's many great Pub once home and sober you will be able to read about what a great weekend you had even if you can't remember. Like wise if you don't go/can't go you will be able to read about what a great weekend you have missed! Coblers Monday Whitby's Shanty Group are again booked for the Shanty Festival on the Whitby Weekend which is the weekend after the Music Port Festival This Weekend (It's half term take the week off and stay for both!) But I can tell you that Coblers monday will be in the Endeavour to start the Whitby end of the festival at 20.00 hrs with Ol'Abel Parkin,Keepers Lock, Deric Gifford,Georges peoetry Unlimiter ,Coblers Monday amd Feet first. Some of the same artists will all so appear at the Pier Inn at 20.30 hrs. Mick Haywood will be at the helm in the Endeavour to introduce the guests. Sang along with the Shellbacks at the bandstand (perhaps they'll let me join if I ask nicely) and had a good singaround in the Endeavour later. Even had a quick paddle. Didn't see Chanteyranger unfortunately but met plenty of other 'catters. Only regret we couldn't find any accomodation so had to leave around 9pm and drive home - sober!! |

We Know they left the Endevour together at the end of the evening (the bar was still open at this point!). Aaardvark and myself speculated that Denies (the Mayoress) may have chained him to her bed with the Maroral Chain of Office! When she appeared in the Endevour on Sunday Afternoon we confronted her. Deneis says that she has not seen him since! Should we belive her? It is the Goth weekend next week in Whitby! Ps Did I have a good time? I can't remmember things are still a bit hazy! |

We are true seafarers now, having sung shanties on the high seas (...and we're bound for South Australia... Really??) Shellbacks and friends singing in the bandstand to passers-by and gathering an audience all the way up the steps to the West Cliff! And The Sloop John B gets more complex every time we do it... Lovely to meet up with friends old and new. You shall be a Shellback, Mrs Duck! (A shellbacked duck??) Whitby was fantasic and I have to agree with Noreen, singing shanties on the deck of the old lifeboat as we 'ploughed the raging seas' was a fantastic experience! It was a great weekend, and amazing finding out who all the Mudcatters are...I only knew you by your Mudcat names before. Singing on the old lifeboat was fantastic, but so was singing on the bandstand with people able to listen to us from the cliff....oh the power!!! Thanks to all of you for making it a fantastic weekend - roll on the next one (and we're definitely staying in the Endeavour again Noreen, I can recommend it!!) What a great weekend in Whitby. I was in danger of losing my return ticket. Cookfest began the week before in Middlesbrough, then on to Marske and Staithes before Whitby. I was singing all that week with Richard Grainger and his group, The Stormy Weather Boys. Richard and Ian McNichol organized the fest so that it reached out into the communities. We sang in the church at Marske, in Cleveland hospital for patients and on the hospital's radio station, in a recreation hall, aboard the Endeavor at the Stockton quay, and at the Sunday night folk club at Dr. Brown's. Whitby was the perfect culmination of the fest. What a magical place. It was great finally meeting several 'Catters and connecting the people to they're names. A great bunch to meet up with, and I was only sorry there wasn't more time on my trip to talk with you more. Got to hear Noreen's rendition of Lowlands Away, which was soulful and moving. It was a pleasure getting adopted (or abducted) by the Shellbacks at Whitby, singing with them in the lifeboat and in the Pier Inn. Great meeting Ickle Dorritt and Michael in Swansea as well. So, Ickle, I didn't drink half as much as I should? Are you kidding? I drank enough water to fill an aquarium! :-) -chanteyranger |
