One year I went as a fallen beauty queen with a banner that read "Miss Understood" ... won a prize!

It won't work if you don't want bulk and props, but many years ago before AIDs even, I went as the Ramses condom lady, in a large condom box, complete with surgical gloves, white tights and a silver wig and gave out samples of condoms. Sort of along the lines of the Planters Peanut Man or the Man from Glad. Won first prize too.

and to give it a Canadian touch, my contents were in French and English.

Well, -I'm- gonna have my maille hauberk done so that's my costume...

In the closet we have, A Green Man, a Pressed Fairy (from the book), the Dread Pirate Roberts who if you change his hat a bit is a passable Zorro, Aqualung minus the dog, and the lions share of an Indiana Jones costume...

I did this a couple of years ago... dressed all in black, complete with big black trench coat, and long black leather 'biker' gauntlets... bought a plain black mask that completely covered my face (I could see out, but no one could see in) No one knew who it was until I spoke and they recognised the voice... I told eveyone I was a shadow... at the midnight unmasking/costume parade, I won 3rd prize because under the mask, I was a "Shadow of my former self"... I had shaved off my beard for the first time since I'd been in Windsor...

Talk about horrific eh!!

gave out samples of condoms....contents were in French and English. Shouldn't this be on the "Did you REALLY mean to say that" thread?

Try going as Bin and make some anthrax jokes. Just a couple of sheets, fake beard and some talc on the sheets. You'll be the hit of the party.... or hit.

If you're a guy, stick a postage stamp on your head and go as First Class Male. I sent my dog out trick-or-treating with this one a couple of years ago.

I've also seen someone stick a drinking straw in their breast pocket and go as The Last Straw.

Costume with minimal props:
1) Standard ghost sheet with eye-holes
2) One of those arrow-through-the-head headbands (preferably worn front-to-back with arrow sticking out the back)
3) Paper-mache apple affixed to headband on top of head
4) Sign around neck that reads: "William Tell's other kid".

I was just at Old Navy last night and they have some kit-things you can buy that have things like mouse ears and a tail... I don't think they were very much but I didn't look.

Once, for a Beatle-fan's birthday party, we were supposed to come dressed as our favorite Beatles song. I made a LIFE cereal box to go over my head, with a cutout for my face. Don't know what happened to the box, it's probably somewhere in my basement or something...

Remember, you can never go wrong with the Groucho nose & moustache. ;-)

If nobody knows you at the party, dress as you always would and label yourself as A Perfect Stranger. Or you could get some "space alien" type make-up, add dark glasses and a thin cane. Then add an identifying sign; "Venusian (Blind).

If you're male, go naked wearing roller skates, and be a pull toy. If you're female, go naked except for tall boots, and be Puss in Boots.

Seriously, type "Halloween costume ideas" or some such into a search engine--there are sites that have lists of costume suggestions.

One year I went as a tombstone. It was a bit bulky, but it uses one simple prop--a cardboard box painted gray, with armholes and a headhole. I wore black and painted a smart aleck epitaph on it (the possibilities are endless there). At this particular party, I was trying to be unrecognizable to friends, so my head was covered by a black T-shirt poking out of the top of the box. I didn't even punch eyeholes in it, but could still see through the fabric. Easier for talking and drinking would be a black hood and eye mask.

The basic ghost using a white sheet with eyeholes is pretty easy, and although it's a cliche hardly anyone does it, so it may be unique at your party.

A 50's/60's nerd isn't too difficult. For a male, too short pants, pocket protector, plastic frame glasses with the bridge "repaired" with thick tape, maybe a bit of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of a shoe. For a female, catseye glasses, clumsy makeup, prim hairdo, unfashionable skirt and blouse, dark lace-up shoes with dark socks. (Skip this idea if this is how you usually look.)

An old man/woman can be done with an old person mask, white wig or baby powder in the hair, cane, and appropriate posture and speech. (Skip this one if you actually are old.)

One year, in an attempt to be unrecognized in costume, I planted a red herring by showing up in regular clothes, acting pitiful and saying I couldn't think of a costume. After establishing my presence, I snuck into the bathroom and put on my white sheet. I hunkered down to disguise my height and danced with people of the same sex. It worked.

Whatever you do, have fun!

Once when we were still teenagers (a long time ago) my brother and I went to a costume party. We wanted to be the last ones "recognized", so I went as a Hobo, with full-face mask and typical shabby suit of clothes, and HE went as the Fairy Princess, with a full-face princess mask, long prom dress from me and elbow length gloves. Even when our friends thought they had figured out who "we" were, they were still wrong.

I have a Hallowe'en/Samhain party every year and offer a themee to my friends and invitees. (It is known as the Gothic Samhain Soiree, so they can always just wear black and feel like they have made an effort).

This year's theme: Denizens of the Otherworld.

Past themes: Favorite Dead Fictional Character; Your Evil Twin

I have dressed as The Madwoman in the Attic, Jane Eyre, and a vampire, and oh I can't think what else...this year, I think I shall draw vines and leaves on my face and wear ragged green clothes and go as a tree sprite or some such thing...

Try hitting a thrift shop or vintage clothing store; they tend to really play up their Hallowee'en usefulness at this time of year...

Get a long, unkempt wig, and carry a vase (or a lump of clay) and go as Hairy Potter.
