Subject: Touched By An Angel to be Cancelled
From: BlueJay

Got an e-mail stating that the television show "Touched by an Angel" would soon be cancelled because of it's religious implications. The e-mail stated that the late athiest Madeline Murray O'Hare's organisation had somehow manipulated this, and that Sunday morning church broadcasts of all religions are in jeopardy.

I think it's probably bullshit, but has anyone heard of a definitive court case or media decision regarding this?

Understand that I am not a religious person, but I do like that television show. But I don't like the idea that it could be regulated out of existence on anti-religious grounds. Same with the Sunday morning televised church services, even though I believe most of those preachers are quacks.

Just curious. Throw in a Hallelua if you want to convert this to a "musical" thread. Thanks, BlueJay

I'm with Larry. SICK SICK SICK of "angels". Angels with TV shows. Songs about angels. Books about them. Angels channeling their thrilling insights into world events via upper-middle-class California housewives. Dumbass unimaginative cosmology. Been done a million times.

Don't believe Christian (or other) propaganda spread by alarmist e-mail. An American media activist named Lorenzo Milam filed a petition with the FCC, back in 1974 or so, requesting among other things that they put a hold on the granting of broadcast licences to anymore religious organizations. Not that no religious programming be permitted, just that no more broadcast licences be issued until the FCC had considered some of the implications of the proliferation of religious propaganda and associated fundraising scams on the public airwaves.

The reaction was like the one to the dying-boy-in-England-who=wanted-postcards. For the next twenty years the FCC was deluged with mail opposing the proposal to "ban religious broadcasting". That proposal had never been made in the first place, and the proposal that Milam had made was never seriously considered by the FCC.

And since Madalyn Murray O'Hair was murdered by her office manager several years ago it's in pretty poor taste that they continue to malign her.

Well, I won't mallign anyone's tastes here by putting down "Touched by an Angel" (personally, I don't like it, but that's just me). But I've been wondering if it's been getting poorer ratings lately.

They've moved the time slot around, and some promos I've seen for it (iirc) have mentioned the introduction of new angels to the cast.

Makes me think they're trying to add some "freshness" to a show that's been on the air for ... how long? Over five years, at least. Networks tend to try stuff like that when the ratings start to slip.

If the show gets cancelled, that's the first reason I'd look for, rather than an anti-religious conspiracy.

Hey BJ.....Go to Snope's Urban Legends Site and check under Radio/TV or enter "Touched By An Angel" in the search box. You'll get the page about it and a lot of links too. Basically, it's another hoax.

On the other hand, has anyone else been as delighted as we've been with the new Richard Dreyfuss show, "The Education of Max Bickford?" It been on Sunday evenings and has been astoningshly good, thoughtful television. I highly recommend it.

So let's do it like they do on the Discovery channel"

George Carlin's latest standup, "You Are All Diseased" has a good rant about the recent surge in the 'belief' in angels... I'd tape it and share it with those interested but the idiots at The Movie Network (Canadian Pay TV) have stopped running it since sept 11th... I suspect this is because the first 20 minutes or so is rant aobut the stupidity of airport security... -IF- it ever comes back, I'm gonna be sure to tape it!

Cows. Cows are really stupid. Also heavy and hard to direct if you're not a fast dog and they're out of their enclosure.

Take my neighbour's cows. Please. Ah, just kiddin.

I once observed a herd of cows on a farm where I was working. They would stand around in the rain in the barnyard. When the sun came out they all stampeded into the barn.

Also, they would sometimes step on my feet. Interestingly, cows seem to know about steel-toed boots. They would always tread on the tongue of my boot where they could actually damage my feet.

Cows are evil. Just like angels.

Sorry.

The show is being cancled because of ratings not religion, just as it was on in the first place for the same reasons. That people thought it was morally uplifitng was just gravy for the producers and network who would not care if it were Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Probably the best TV show with a religious theme was "Nothing Sacred." Got axed after just a half-a-dozen shows. Father Ray had doubts, was tempted, didn't always agree with the rest of the church, and on one occasion (when all the priests were in the slammer for protesting an inustice), a nun conducted the service. Great, thought provoking show, even for those who're not enamored with religion. But several churches screeched like scalded cats and the show was pulled.

Network execs are gutless!!

If "Touched" is cancelled, it will be because not enough people watch it to sell products advertised. It's all a matter of ratings.

I remember this cartoon show that featured James Garner as the voice of God...and it was about this guy who was beseiged by both a devil and god...it got pulled after a couple of shows, due to the protests of the religious right....how much do you want to bet that the majority of those who scream and yell against these shows have never actually sat down and watched them?

I'm sure most have them HAVE seen it - therefore they can yell and scream and know what theyre yelling and screming about. It's too cliche to say that they don't watch something and just want to protest it.

Amergin, it's on CBS on Sundays, here. I put in a link earlier in this thread.

Sorry you feel that way about it PC. Maybe if you tried another couple of episodes?

Dreyfuss is the executive director and Rog and I both thought it was obvious it had his stamp of zealous wry humour and tight lines. I think it is one of the best things we've seen on tv in years. We've been holding our breath, hoping that it isn't seen as too good and will get cut for space for another stupid survivor show or something equally inane.

KERA, the PBS affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth plays the British comedy Vicar of Dibley. At times this one is very witty. I don't watch much commercial televison. Over the last 20 years or so I can think of only a couple I watched regularly, Northern Exposure and Frank's Place. Not only funny, but irreverant, and on occasion offering wildly-non-traditional spiritual options. Never watched things like Seinfeld or Friends, though they were on for years. Didn't seem to be any point to them. Dick Cavett used to do a pretty witty talk show. Geez. I am dating myself. Used to hear my parents up late at night laughing at Jack Paar.

I wouldn't mind if "Touched by an Angel" were cancelled; its religious "message" is WAY too heavy-handed for me. I prefer the slightly more subtle treatment of the subject in the old "Little House on the Prairie" series (in fact, Michael Landon played an angel on another series, didn't he? Was it "Highway to Heaven"? That one I never watched).

Re Richard Dreyfuss: What is it with movie stars lately, trying their hand at TV series? Dreyfuss, Geena Davis, Jim Belushi, Edward Herrmann... isn't TV a step backward for their careers (especially when the series is a trite sitcom like Davis's or Belushi's)? Haven't seen the Max Bickford show yet, but I've long since tired of Dreyfuss's acting style so I'm not likely to tune in.

Actually, what I'm waiting for with bated breath is the season premiere of "Boston Public" (scheduled for Monday, October 29 on FOX). Now THERE'S a show where nobody's perfect! Can't wait to see what happens to Kathy Bates's evil-mom character!!!

Father Ted definitely the star religious series. And I believe it was very popular among a lot of priests as well.

As for Angels - there's nothing particularly Christian about the idea of Angels. There are lots of Angels in the Jewish and Islamic tradition. Gabriel's very big in all three I believe - the spirit of ecumenism, you could say.

If I remember correctly, it's in the "blessing of the animals" episode of The Vicar of Dibley where the Reverend(?) Geraldine and the verger, Alice Tinker, have a conversation about "I can't believe it's not butter" that is one of the funniest routines I have ever heard on television. It ranks right up there with classic comedy routines like Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" Track it down. It's an absolute howl.

Don,

On a thread tangent, did you ever see the British Comedy called Two's Company with Elaine Stritch? It was made many years ago, with the premise of a woman from Brooklyn, name of Dorothy McNab, living in London, and negotiating life with an English butler. It was one of the funniest programs around, but they never replay it around here.
