Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: GUEST,SUsan-Marie at home Date: 19 Oct 01 - 11:30 AM Gypsy - I have it as a noteworthy composer file. I could convert it to a midi, convert that to text, and post it here - but I've never done it before and don't know if it will work the first time. I can e-mail you the midi directly, or I can even FAX you the sheet music I use for it. WHat's your preference? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: Gypsy Date: 20 Oct 01 - 11:59 PM Gee, what a ton of help! Sorcha, thanks so much for the site! Am printing, and will transpose into the key of playable. (No flats on my dulcimer) Susan Marie, if you have this in A, C, D, or G, would love a copy. Anyway you want to do it, let me know what is YOUR convenience. Thanks to all, for all the help. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: CapriUni Date: 21 Oct 01 - 12:41 AM Sorcha -- Great site! though the music is a wee bit hard for me to read that way ;-), by squinting down at the bottom of the page (the photocopied page, not the web page) it looked like it said that it was "Encoded and enforced" (something like that) by the Library of Congress 1871... Sounds like copyright to me, but I thought American copyright law didn't start until 1900, at least for literature. Is it different for music? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: Gypsy Date: 22 Oct 01 - 11:22 AM "Entered according to the Act of Congress, 1871" Whatizzat? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: Susan-Marie Date: 22 Oct 01 - 01:27 PM Gypsy - I can put this into any key you want. Easiest for me is to FAX or mail it to you. I can give you versions in several keys if you want (Noteworthy Composer transposes automatically). I probably have it in D right now. E-mail me at susan.stedman@verizon.net and give me your fax # or address (and what keys you want it in). I also have a great recording of it with people doing 16-part harmony on the chorus. I could send you a tape of that if you're interested. It's a great song - our band does it at every gig this time of year. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 23 Oct 01 - 12:41 PM Johnny Collins does this song, although the tune and arrangement are different to the one given above. Anyone have a clue who the AT. who is credited for the words is/was. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: Anglo Date: 24 Oct 01 - 01:29 AM Johnny Collins' sleevenotes: All Among The Barley is from Alfred Williams "Folk Songs of the Upper Thames" set to a superbly singable tune by Mike Gabriel of Cheltenham. He adds: I got it from Maureen 'Mo' Marshall who runs the folk club at the Lamb Inn, Iron Acton, near Bristol. This from "Free & Easy" 1982, Traditional Sound Recordings. I haven't seen the early Johnny Collins CD that I think Fellside put out recently, so I don't know if it is on there. They apparently now own Traditional Sound Recordings, so I hope we see more of them. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: nutty Date: 24 Oct 01 - 03:43 AM And another that could be as early as 1863 ..... which, interestingly, is to be sung in a totally different way from both the sheet music version and the Johnny Collins version ALL AMONG THE BARLEY - 2 |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: nutty Date: 01 Nov 01 - 01:07 PM Just unearthed some information that I was given about this song ... although I must stress that the authenticity of it is not confirmed. All among the Barley .... words by Alfred Williams Tune written by Mike and Jackie Gabriel (This is the tune sung by Johnny Collins of which the MIDI is posted in this thread) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: All among the barley From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Nov 01 - 01:16 PM Alfred Williams didn't write the words, though they were taken from his book Folk-Songs of the Upper Thames (1923), where the song appeared as The Ripe and Bearded Barley. He commented, "Popular at Stanton Harcourt, where I obtained it of Henry Serman, a farm hand". Williams published only the texts of the songs he had collected; he intended to return for the tunes at a later date, but was never able to. Messages from multiple threads combined. Subject: Author req: From: Zany Mouse Date: 12 Apr 03 - 06:58 PM Does anyone know the origins of All Among The Barley? DT doesn't give an author. Could this be by the famous Trad Anon? Any info would be good. ZM |
Subject: RE: Author req: All Among the Barley From: Zany Mouse Date: 12 Apr 03 - 07:12 PM Having posted this Mick tells me he had put up an answer to this very question in the past. In case any of you are interested his answer is: The version commonly heard in the UK is, according to the notes on Johnny Collins' Free And Easy, words from Alfred Williams' Folk Songs Of The Upper Thames and tune put to it by Mike Gabriel ZM |
