I had always heard this saying love like it's never going to hurt and dance like no one's watching. Then at a party last night someone was saying a much longer version that rymed. Does anyone know the poem's name or where I could find it?? Don't know authors name. Thanks

I'm pretty certain that's a Grit Laskin tune. Wouldn't bet the farm on it, though.

There's a song sung by Kathy Mattea called Come from the Heart, and part of the lyric goes, "You've gotta sing like you don't need the money, love like you'll never get hurt, you've gotta dance like nobody's watching, it's gotta come from the heart if you want it to work."

So much for my daily edification....

I'm pretty sure Grit sang this the last time he was in town and I thought it was one of his.

Nice tune.

Come From The Heart
(Susanna Clark & Richard Leigh)

When I was a young man my daddy told me
A lesson he learned, it was a long time ago:
If you want to have someone to hold onto
You're gonna have to learn to let go.

Chorus:
You got to sing like you don't need the money,
Love like you'll never get hurt,
You got to dance like nobody's watchin'.
It's gotta come from the heart if you want it to work.

Now here is the one thing that I keep forgetting
When everything is falling apart:
In life as in love, what I need to remember,
There's such a thing as trying too hard.

Chorus

Garnet Rogers does a great cover of this tune. But I'm drawing a blank on which album it's on.

I don't know it as a song, but the longer saying I heard was:
Dance like no one is watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like no one is listening
and live like it's heaven on earth!

A Google search turns up that it's by —William Purkey.

I also turned up an Irish proverb:
Work like you don't need the money;
dance like no one is watching;
sing like no one is listening;
love like you've never been hurt;
and live every day as if it were your last.

This quote came up in our pastor's Easter sermon, which I heard twice this weekend because I had to sing at three Masses. Anyhow, the pastor's quote was just a little different - and he attributed it to William Shakespeare. I don't know if I would believe it originated in Shakespeare, but I'm constantly surprised by the familiar phrases that originated in Shakespeare.
What about this one? Can somebody tie this to a quote from Shakespeare?
Or should I not believe the Good Father?

I'm certain it's not Shakespeare, not unless it's been extensively paraphrased. I'm also pretty sure it's not an Irish proverb, unless it's been translated from th Irish language by an American, for the same reason: that use of "like" to mean "as if" or "as though" is normal enough in colloquial speech in England nowadays, but it's a relatively recent import from US English.

There was a nice twisted version of this that someone used to use as a sig, along the lines of:
Love like you don't need the money
Dance like you'll never be hurt
(I forget the rest but it must have involved taking further liberties with the original). Maybe it was someone here?

Do you remember a bit of the pastor's wording, Joe? I love Shakespeare, but I don't recognize this from any of the plays or sonnets... but then again, that good ol' boy Bill had his own unique way of putting things, didn't he? And he may have expressed similiar sentiments in different words.

I think the pastor's quote was this one, posted above:
    Dance like no one is watching,
    Love like you'll never be hurt,
    Sing like no one is listening
    and live like it's heaven on earth!
It's attributed on some sites to Mark Twain, and on many others to William Purkey, who appears to be a professor who writes self-help books. The pastor is in "recovery mode" after Easter, so I can't get hold of him to ask (and he might not be in a mood to be questioned this week).
To me, the source of the words will always be Kathy Mattea and her beautiful voice, even though she isn't the one who wrote them.

Well, if those are the lines your pastor used, I'm pretty sure it's not Shakespeare. It's the wrong meter to have come from either the plays or the sonnets, for one thing...

But at least, he did attribute it to a William, even if he got the surname mixed up! ;-)

Shakespeare or not, it's still lovely -- and true!

and if everyone lived as if it were Heaven on Earth, it would be!

Yes, Joe, Kathy Mattea's version of "Come From The Heart" is the only recording I've ever heard of those lines, but the lyrics to the song are as I posted above, with the last line of the chorus being "It's got to come from the heart if you want it to work."
