I have been listening a lot lately to Siwsann George's CD "Traditional Songs of Wales". It's great - easily among the top 10 I've ever heard. So, this enquiring mind wants to know, where else can I hear her sing? I did an Internet search, and this seems to be her only CD. Can this be true?

Edmund

hnk - I've never heard of this lady. (which isn't saying much, but I like to take an interst in my roots) - could you give us more details, a track listing, where she's from? (i.e. a bit more specific?)

Siwsann has several CD's , both solo and with her old band Mabsant, and also a book of songs from the Mabsant era. She lives in Abercynon,Wales.

Two Mabsant tracks are on the compilation 'Valley Lights' (1986). You might also try Sain's website though I'm not sure whether that's her label.

Dai:

The album is "Traditional Songs of Wales - Caneuon Traddodiadol Cymru" on Saydisc Records, CD SDL 406. My favourites are "Miner's Life", which is in English to the great hymn tune "Calon Lan", and "Clywch, Clywch". (There should be circonflex over the "a" in Lan, but the keyboard is configured in English right now). The lyrics to all the songs are included.

If anyone can provide details of Siswsann's other recordings, I would be grateful. As I said, I wasn't able to find any.

Siwsann George did produce at least three recordings in the '80's. But they are all vinyl recordings and I don't think that any of them are re-issued in CD format.

"Gwyl Mabsant" produced in 1983 produced on an independant label "Gwerin" (Rec No: SYW 240) with Siwsann George & Stuart Brown. Both performed under the title of Mabsant.

They produced "Chwar'e Chwyldro" on the same label in 1986. Rec No: SYW 448.

The following year saw the album "Trwy'r Weiar" produced by Sain, Rec No:SAIN 1404M

Also on the Sain label, the album "Cofeb" was produced in 1989. Siwsann & Stuart were joined on this recording by Steve Whitehead and among others Robin Williamson (Ex Incredible String Band!) The Rec No: SAIN 1508M.

You might well be able get the last two from SAIN?

I haven't heard or seen any thing of Siwsann lately. I don't know whether she is still active on the Welsh folk scene?

There is a very old thread on Welsh songs I started after finding Siwsann George's CD in our public library, and learning her version of A Miner's Life. I get flack for singing it that way, now, because it isn't the melody people here know for that song. I love it, though. Search the forum for Welsh song threads, and you'll find the old one.

Siwsi hasn't been very well the last couple of years - she had a recording project 'in the works' but I think she had to put it on hold. I am temporarily without my 'organiser' but I'll see if I can ring her tomorrow to see what plans she has. I think the above is a fairly good summary of her recordings, although I'd add "Mabsanta". I think that was with Sain ...

Alice:

Good for you. Calon Lan is a great tune, and it is the original tune for "A Miner's Life". When you compare the tune that is more well known in North America, you can see how Calon Lan evolved.

Sian: I hope Siwsann is doing better.

A few days ago I received a leaflet telling me that Siwsan George will be singing 'Songs Of Struggle And Celebration' along with Frankie Armstrong, Shanee Taylor, Sarah Harman, Sound Women, and Abercapella,at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, on Nov 8th. Start time 8pm. This is a concert to benefit the Campaign Against the Arms Trade. For ticket details phone 08700 131812. I thought you'd like to know this, it sounds good. Burl.

It sounds like a good concert. Alas, Cardiff is a fair piece from Ottawa.
