Recently I have been traveling to attend meetings anywhere from Valley Forge, PA (Norristown) to Wilmington and Baltimore.

So, what are the best places to catch a drink and a live tune? Any sessions? Apparently I go right past the turn on 202 for Onstage Productions. Is the Brewery any good?

Ed

I don't know much about breweries, but I'd try to go through Newark at some point. They have a nice diner there in town. Besides that, there is WVUD that has two nice folkshows on Saturday. If you go through Chester County on Sunday, there is the radio show the Counrty Corner from 1 -4 PM on WCOJ 1420 AM on Sunday. Live shows are a bit thin as most of them occur on Friday and Saturday night. Tuesday evenings there is live bluegrass at Dugals Tavern in Mortonville on Strasburg Rd. near Coatesville, perhaps good for a return trip on that day. West Chester University has free live recitals and concerts during the week in the evenings. Check our website www.wcupa.edu in the activities (?) subsection for times and locations. I hope this gives you a good start.

Well, UB Ed, I live in Blue Bell, which is just north of Norristown. I like to go to the Mermaid, which is on Germantown Pike/Ave in Northwest Phila. They have different sessions on different nights. I like the Open Circle on first and third Thursdays the best. They also have an Irish session every Wednesday, and different sessions, like bluegrass and country, on Tuesdays. Two Mondays a month they have an open mic night.

Are you in the area today? Tonight will be the annual Mudcat Night at the Iron Hill Brewery in West Chester at 9 pm. There will be various local and travelling Mudcatters there performing and it SHOULD be simulcast on Mudcat Radio. It would be great if you could make it!

WALKING EAGLE--if you're in or near West Chester, you're invited, too! No cover, and good beer and pizza!

Tonight?!?!?! NO!!! Tomorrow night! I won't be there until tomorrow!!!! (Brief tantrum as Ed takes out his frustration at missing yet another Mudcat activity).....

Wow, I had already found the Iron Hill Brewery on some literature and it doesn't seem far from where I usually stay...

Typical of my timing.

I appreciate the advice for West Chester and NW Phillie.

Ed

I didn't know about the Mudcat thing at Ironhill. Does this happen regularly? I hope our friend gets to take advantage of the events at WCU as Peggy Seeger will be here tonight. Sorry, tickets are long gone!

Do you guys mean to tell me that in the very heart of Mudcatville this is all we got? Merrymac and Walking Eagle, thanks for responding. If I stumble on something interesting while I'm up there, I'll let you know!

"...in the very heart of Mudcatville this is all we got?" Heck, no!

Here's a link to Media_Music group at Yahoo! Groups, a free, easy-to-use email group service, described as follows: "A group of friends who gather to share food, fellowship, and folk songs. As a member of this group, you may send messages to the entire group using just one email address: Media_Music@yahoogroups.com. Yahoo! Groups also makes it easy to store photos and files, coordinate events, and more." You'll receive lots of e-mails about upcoming events in the Media/Kennett Square, PA area when you join. Also, check out the Pomegranate Café in Paoli, PA (formerly the Doghouse Café). I don't know if they have music on weeknights, but here's a description from a friend who's performing this coming Saturday: The Pomegranate is a cozy little spot where you can get a hot drink and something sweet (or light meal) while you view local art on display and listen to great acoustic music.
Pomegranate Cafe (formerly the Doghouse Cafe)
83 E. Lancaster Ave (Rt. 30) in Paoli, PA
Near the intersection of Rt. 30 and Rt. 252,
attached to the Arrowroot healthfood store
610-999-0117 (restaurant)
(no cover charge for the Saturday performance 7-10 pm)

There's an event in Kennett Square this coming Friday evening:
Kennett Art Stroll
Date: Friday, November 2, 2001
Time: 7:00PM EST (GMT-05:00)
Kennett Square's First Friday Art Stroll, Downtown Kennett Square. Art galleries are open with food and drink. Usually there is music at the coffee shop, but I don't know if something has been booked this month.

AND there are several events each month, including weeknight song-shares, in association with the Philadelphia Songwriters Alliance. There's also an upcoming house concert with four performers including *me* (but it's in south Jersey)! Please PM me for an e-mail contact address.

If you're not already a member, check out the Philadelphia Folksong Society; they have house-concerts and song-shares in addition to an almost-monthly auditorium-concert. Philadelphia Folksong Society

Then there's the Cherry Tree Co-op on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, but they offer only Sunday evening concerts. Their website is here: The Cherry Tree

You'd be wise to pick up a free copy of The City Paper and/or The Philadelphia Weekly (at most bookstores and libraries in the area, as well as elsewhere) to find listings of music events on weeknights, as well. I'll post more stuff as I think of it!

Sharon

Sharon and Russ, thanks for picking up the ball! Looks like I'll be in Wilmington Monday (late) and Wednesday nights.

I poked my head into O'Friels in WIlmington last Thursday night; not much going on, but I saw Seamus Kennedy was to be there the following night.

Sharon, I got onto your yahoo site, thanks. I'll keep checking it.

Russ, I'm assuming the Iron Hill Pub in Newark is separate from the Iron Hill Pub in West Chester?

I appreciate the advice.

Ed

You're welcome, Ed. Sorry I didnt get here sooner, but I assumed from the thread title that you wanted driving directions and, being unfamiliar with the route, didn't open the thread. When I saw it reappear after a time, I figured something more was afoot!

You are welcome.
I don't know if the two brew pubs are related. I am only familiar with the one in Newark. The owner of O'Friels is trying to sell it. Haven't heard anything about the future of O'Friels.
The Green Willow Folk Club often has concerts on Mondays. See http://www.greenwillow.org. O'Friels was the default venue, but that will be changing.
I forgot to mention the Brandywine Dulcimer Fellowship. In spite of the name all acoustic instruments are welcome. It's sort of an American version of a folk club. First Friday of every month. Grace Lutheran Church, Hockessin, DE (just outside Wilmington). 7:30 until midnight or later.
