Sharon, since you can see it, it's

marquee surrounded by the normal pointy brackets

before the text, and

/marquee similarly surrounded after the text.

Largest header is H1, smallest H6.

If you can't see it, you're in Netscape, where the equivalent is blink(?). Don't quote me on that last, and don't tell MudGuard I've been promoting the use of these non-standard sillyisms.. boy, am I in trouble!

Yes, Noreen, you are in trouble now!

And blink has no similarity to marquee. Blink makes the text blink in Netscape 4.x browsers.

And neither marquee nor blink are HTML. Both are not even useful, as moving or blinking text distracts the user from the rest of the text.

bgcolor is not an HTML element, it is an HTML attribute available for the following elements:

body, table, tr, th, td

span is an HTML element used to apply Cascading Style Sheets to text. style is the attribute which contains in its value the CSS you want to apply to the text.

background-color:yellow; color:red; font-size:300%

should be self-explanatory, especially if you look at the red on yellow smiley at 3 times the size of normal text.

The best book around for all of this html code is HTML 4 For the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro. It has been around for a number of years. She goes into attributes like background color (I used some on another recent test thread), and she talks about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Style sheets set the attributes for the entire document for any of the elements you choose to put there. I use them in the pages I design for the university library where I work, then my headlines will all be the same size and color, the body text font is set, the alignment is consistent, the background color is applied to each sheet. Anything I want different on those pages is given that attribute at that place on the page, and that command overrides the style sheet.

Style sheets can be written to apply to an entire document, so that they are their own file in the folder created for the document, and in each document in the head (look at source code to find the head, the body, etc for any page) there is a reference back to that style sheet. The visitor's browser refers there and displays the page accordingly. If the style sheet isn't working, the browser uses default settings.

Yes, you still must put your headline and paragrahp tags etc. in brackets. But that's all you do, is the simple command, not font face names and such. For other types of fonts (like if you want several types of text, for cutlines, for navagation elements, to appear in the alternate text or the URL's, etc. you can create p. class code. I have things in my styles sheets that when put on the page itself (in brackets of course) look like: (p. class=subhead2) and it closes with the simple (/p) in brackets. MOST COMMANDS SHOULD BE CLOSED or they won't work. Not all, but most.

I am stuck using Microsoft's FrontPage in my job at the library, and FrontPage stinks. It's sloppy with the code and I always have to test my pages in Netscape to find and fix the bad code. IE forgives a lot of FrontPage's flaws (of course--they're both from MS). I usually work in the html view in frontpage because the WYSISYG view is where a lot of mistakes are made. I don't bother using FrontPage's browser. I have Dreamweaver installed in the computer and have to wade in and learn that one. I have been told by many web designers that it is far superior. Time, that's the challenge, enough time. . .

If you use FrontPage it sticks tables and lots of other stuff in div tags, which aren't always necessary. Div and Span are commands for putting in your own homemade tags, but aren't automatically necessary unless you've gone ahead and made those tags.

Having said all of this, I should add a couple of URL's for checking your work. Click Here for a code validator, a place that will examine your pages and report back where you need to fix the code to meet the international html standards.

If you do web pages that you think someone might visit with assistive reading devices (for visually-impaired users) you need an unadorned version of your page available. You can run it through the Bobby page (as in a British cop is a "Bobbie") to see if your page is understood by one of those reader programs.

If you pay any attention to any of this advice, the one that should stick is to go get the Castro book. There may be updates by now, but this one is still the bible for many web designers. If you're moving into dynamic html, Peachtree Press has a book on that also. My copy is at work or I'd give you the author. I haven't had time to explore all of the XML and other manifestations out there, but you can find books for all of that from this same press.

I know I will never take the time to TRULY learn complex HTML, but I can find helpers....at this site is ColorFazer, which will do a certain class of tricks.. I suppose one could write code and use this to check the format....

AMERICA was named after a British Customs officer and not, as historians have long believed, the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who participated in Christopher Columbus's voyages to the New World.

Martin Waidseemuller, whose 1507 map of the world was the first to show the so-called Unknown Territory as a separate continent, has long been credited with naming the new land after the Florentine nobleman. But according to a new book by Rodney Broome, Amerike, The Briton Who Gave America its Name, the country was named in 1496, years before Vespucci's voyage, by John Cabot, the Bristol-based explorer who stumbled on the continent while searching for trading opportunities.

'Cabot didn't know he had discovered a separate contnent during his earlier jour journey but he mapped the land he saw in detail and named it after the main sponsor of his trip, a Welsh aristocrat called Richard Amerike,' said Broome. Amerike or Ameryk-both Anglicised versions of Ap Maryke - was a wealthy landowner and merchant trader who lived with his wife, Lucy, and their two teenage daughters in Bristol's Clifton Manor.

He built a profitable career by trading with merchants in Spain and Portugal in the lat ter half of the fifteenth century. In 1486 he was made King's Customs' Officer and was encouraged by the King to send his ships on journeys of discovery. When Cabot was given per mission by Henry VII in 1496 to challenge Columbus the race to discover a trading route through the mysterious land mass that barred Europe's route to valuable trading opportunities in Asia, America was in the perfect position to help, says Broome.

According to papers Broome discovered in Westminster Abbey's archives, Vespucci and Columbus used Cabot's maps secretly. 'As their fame grew and Cabot's declined, the misconception grew that it was they who had named the new land,' he said.

Could I suggest that someone writes out a more step-by-step guide based on an example, and asks Joe to substitute it for what's on the FAQ at present, please?
