Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: MudGuard Date: 08 May 02 - 04:05 PM The consensus opinion at Mudcat is that you probably shouldn't use them Ok, so I am out of consense here. HTML says they are necessary when certain characters appear in the attribute value, they have to be quoted. And if in doubt, I stick to the rules... Here is what the HTML standard says: By default, SGML requires that all attribute values be delimited using either double quotation marks (ASCII decimal 34) or single quotation marks (ASCII decimal 39). Single quote marks can be included within the attribute value when the value is delimited by double quote marks, and vice versa. Authors may also use numeric character references to represent double quotes (") and single quotes ('). For double quotes authors can also use the character entity reference ". |

Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 May 02 - 10:13 AM MudGuard - Right on about the """"". That's the main problem with using the quotes - I seem to be inclined to leave the closing quote off. In this case, I think I copied and thought I'd picked up both quotes - and didn't pruff reed. The consensus opinion at Mudcat is that you probably shouldn't use them at either end, but I have seen a few sites that balk if they're not there. Maybe if I'd get my head made up about how I really want to do it, I wouldn't make so many mistakes. John |
Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: MudGuard Date: 02 May 02 - 09:37 AM John, your last example wouldn't work as the " after the first = is missing ;-) |
Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: JohnInKansas Date: 02 May 02 - 09:18 AM Dead Horse: Let's see how bad I can mess this up. You wrote: <a href="http://www.mudcat.org">thread.cfm?threadid=40461</a> and then: <a href="http://www.mudcat.org">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a> Either of the above will take you to the mudcat homepage - not to the particular thread. The "thread.cfm?threadid=#####" is part of the address that the tag "points to," so the whole thing needs to go in the opening tag - between the first "<a href=" and the first ">": <a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035> The stuff that comes after the first > is the "display" to give people a place to click. It is a fine idea to repeat the critical part of the address, so you might use: <a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a> Or you can put anything else (preferably descriptive) there: <a href="http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">Answers to the world, its meaning, and eventual value to humanity</a> Which would display as Answers to the world, its meaning, and eventual value to humanity It the "target" is on mudcat, you can shorten it to: <a href=/thread.cfm?threadid=4078035">thread.cfm?threadid=4078035</a> Since anyone who can click it is already connected to one of the mudcat servers, you only have to tell them where on their server to find it. If the target is "offsite,' you need the whole thing. John |

Anyone wanting to practise |
Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: GUEST,Pluiméir Ceolmhar coping with hair trigger Date: 29 Apr 02 - 12:00 PM Could I suggest that someone writes out a more step-by-step guide based on an example, and asks Joe to substitute it for what's on the FAQ at present, please? What I have is something along the following lines: EXAMPLE Suppose you want to turn the words "blue clickies" into a link to the HTML Test Thread. 1. Type the sentence containing the relevant words, e.g Anyone wanting to practise blue clickies can use the practice thread set up for this purpose. 2. [At] the phrase "blue clickies" insert the following: [and this is where I need the help of someone who is clickie-literate to give the correct instructions. Just which bits of the instruction in the FAQ should be put exactly where?] 3. Open a separate navigator window... and copy from the address bar the URL to which you want to set up the link. 4. Return to your draft posting and paste in the URL [wherever is appropriate, to be described in unambiguous terms which even an ignoramus like me can't misunderstand] 5. The sentence should now appear as follows [whoever picks up the idea, please correct]: Anyone wanting to practise Click here can use the practice thread set up for this purpose. 6. Finish typing your posting and submit it. When posted it will appear as a html link or "blue clicky". |
Subject: RE: HTML test thread 1 - please ignore From: GUEST,Pluiméir Ceolmhar asking for help Date: 29 Apr 02 - 11:37 AM OK, so I did a blue clicky, but the words which I wanted to turn blue and clicky disappeared into space, and the whole following sentence turned blue and clicky instead. The advice on the FAQ file is just too succinct for someone not used to html. Could I suggest that someone writes out a more step-by-step guide based on an example, and asks Joe to substitute it for what's on the FAQ at present, please? What I have is something along the following lines: Suppose you want to turn the words "blue clickies" into a link to the HTML Test Thread. 1. Anyone wanting to practise blue Type the sentence which includes the words In the meantime I'll keep trying. Photo of ICB workshop. |
