I'm just curious--why did you label this thread "Tune Request"?

I don't see why anyone isn't welcome to speak here as long as they do it politely.

He doesn't have to use his own name, Noreen, just because you and I do. Most people on Mudcat don't use their own names.

Melani, all I meant was that he could have a membership name of his own at the top of his posts, whatever name he chooses, so that his posts don't get confused with those of 53/Glenda.

I care not who he is or what his name is, or what he stands for, as long as his postings are polite... :0)

Would you like to tell us what your problem is, Bob?

At least one problem is that Bob posted a question that a number of people decided was a troll, and so they jumped on him--he has a tendency to make short, stream of consciousness posts, and people have misunderstand a couple of them, as well--not to worry, though Bob--we all have that problem at one time or another--Not like I should be speaking for him, but I do want him to know that he's OK by me--

And if it is any consolation, Bob, I go through times when I have mixed feelings, too--

Being "a PLACE FOR All to speak" cuts both ways, bob. In a thread you started recently, you were complaining about the amount of BS in the Mudcat. That could be perceived by some as an attempt to shut them up.

Over the years I've slipped into "troll" mode now an again and have usually been called on it, but rarely have I ever gotten the impression that I shouldn't be allowed to speak.

Most real trolls do seem to last around here too long - probably because few Mudcatters give them the satisfaction they deserve.

If you don't think that you aren't allowed to speak here, take note of this thread - clearly the powers that be are "letting" you speak here - one of them even corrected your prefex boo-boo - hardly an censorship issue.

It's been said before and will continue to be said that it's good to think before you hit the Submit Message button and if someone has an issue with one of your comments, address it directly. You can't expect us to all be completely open-minded all the time. And remember that you might not have all the facts and may just be wrong sometimes.

Huh?

Boy, if this isn't a place where anyone can speak their mind about anything, I don't know what is. In my three years I've only known some really extreme nastiness or stupidity to be censored.

Cheers

Bob and Glenda and I corresponded quite a bit when they joined, and I think they are both pretty new to the internet. At the time they joined, a number of membership options were described to them-- but their choice was to share a membership, and they are not the only couple woho do share one. Sometimes they make a post together-- Glenda has a lot more ability in the writing and typing department, but it's Bob who wants to communicate usually, and so she helps him do that. (Remember Steve Goodman's song about the Dutchman? Remember dear Margaret?)

There are some things I am not going to go into detail about-- but I would ask Mudcatters to give Bob some slack. Maybe it's enough to say that we all have our personal ups and downs, and days when we make more sense than others. How about we just pay out a little line and let Bob be Bob, and how about the rest of us just relax and take him as he comes. Like Mmario did above-- no ill will expressed, just an honest reaction of bafflement.

I can tell you this-- what is coming across from Bob as a wish to make arguments is not that at all... he's just trying to start conversations.

And many of us here are really GOOD at conversation.

So Bob-- I have found Mudcat in general to be pretty cool, although not always easy to understand. But the music discussions here are the BEST! What music have you been listening to lately?

I agree with Bob, the Mudcatters can be very abusive and sometimes physically so. Many people are unaware that the Mudcat has a Star Chamber that frequently passes judgment and imposes punishment for unfavorable postings. For example, I once made the observation that America is actually a great place to live and that American music is the envy of the world. Seventy two hours later, three masked men burst into my apartment and beat me nearly senseless. Then they forced me to sign a statement in my own blood recanting my post. They were hooded, but wearing Mudcat T-Shirts. I heard two of them use the names Donuel and Catspaw when giving advice on how to better wedge my head into the microwave.

Censoring extreme nastiness and/or stupidity in posts to the Mudcat forum seems to depend upon who is doing the posting. Censoring isn't the same as flat out ignoring someone. From my perspective, certain people in the supposedly non-existent Mudcat inner circle can post whatever they please, polite, impolite, pleasant, or unpleasant, tasteless, or whatever. As a member, I was never intentionally unpleasant, judgmental, hurtful, or negative in my posts, yet nobody engaged me very often. I can't even elicit a response as a "no-name" guest. I guess I must just be one of those hapless people who get overlooked. I've certainly been shown here that my opinions and contributions are not of little interest to the revered and seasoned Mudcatters, so I'll withdraw my membership and not waste my time.

Seriously, sometimes posts draw a lot of comments from others and sometimes they don't. If you want some attention (guaranteed) post that you think President Bush is a great president! :>)

So now, WYSIWYG, we know Bob's problem! He needs a stronger eyeglass prescription, right? :>)

Right Doug, like the rest of us-- the one that lets you read minds and produce copy that lets others read yours.

I guess these come in a range of colors and styles. Some people think mine came with lots of mascara and fake eyelashes, and bright blue eye-shadow. But actually they are quite plain wire frames, even if the tint of the lenses is a bit rosier than some prefer.

What kind you have, Doug?

*G* And Bob-- who plays better, Glenda or the other students?

Yeh Stick with it, Bob. It's generaly a great place to be. Bear in mind it is, only in my opinion I hasten to add, not exclusively devoted to folk and blues. Think of it more as a place where people who like folk, blues and all sorts of other music gather to discuss all sorts of stuff. When it gets to a matter which tends to raise passions things can get nasty - but better fight here than go and thump your neighbour!

I am more happy than otherwise with it - and I have had some earache from anonymous flamers as well as some really good impassioned political debates with some very civilised, and generaly civil, members. The longer you stay the more you will get used to it.

You may even get to like 'spaw eventualy...

What? It COULD happen;-)

Not being able to elicit a response "even as a 'no-name' guest" is exactly what I like about this place: it's just like home.

Now who would want to go and screw that up by becoming a member? As a guest, you're going to be treated with the same indifference, apathy and resentment as if it were your own family.

GUEST (one of them, I guess)said:

"Censoring isn't the same as flat out ignoring someone."

True, and neither is "censoring" the same as "being critical".

I think it can be taken for granted that if one comes to a forum where there are all sorts of people, whose real-life identities are hidden (as most of ours are) by nicknames, he'll find that some of them are outspoken and may not be willing to "suffer fools gladly" as they might see it. That's THEIR free speech.

As to "flat out ignoring", no-one (as I see it) has a RIGHT to be responded to here. If one posts an interesting question it's almost sure to be responded to. If one is civil in one's post, the response is most likely to be civil. I don't know whether GUEST counts me in his alleged clique or not (and I don't really care), but when I first came on board a few years ago, an unknown here and surely not a part of any clique, I never had any problem with being ignored. As a newbie I made comments in threads, and sometimes they were responded to and sometimes they were not. It's still that way. I don't think any threads I initiated as a newbie, whether general questions or requests for songs, ever went unresponded to. Sometimes the thread was (as is) not interesting to enough catters to survive long, but that is the breaks of the game.

To sum up, GUEST (whichever one you may be), grow up. If one wants respect he has to earn it, here as anywhere. That's difficult at best when no-one can flesh out much idea of a personality lying (hiding?) behind a generic designation like GUEST.

Dave Oesterreich Now, several years later,

You are an idiot if you take this site or most of the people here seriously enough to whine about your treatment. What do you expect from a bunch of 40 year old virgins who spend all their time logged on here. You should do as i do, think of it as a human zoo that you visit from time to time when you are bored to tease the monkeys.

I used to see a Celebes Macaque who could pop an unsuspecting zoo visitor at 40 paces with a handful of fresh ...ummmm...excrement.

There's a few 'guests' here I'd like to lead past his cage.

Old Jocko, the Macaque, was an anti-social bugger, so he coped very much like certain nameless humans...he was unable to get along in a group, so he amused himself by tormenting those who did....slinging shit.

it is too bad, he was a bright monkey
