Subject: nursery rhyme quiz
From: grannyjan

My 4 year old niece has brough a quiz home. It has the initial letters of the words in the first line of nursery rhymes, eg LTT = Little Tommy Tucker.

We are stuck on JBN (as well as for Jack be Nimble, there is another one) and TNWDB.

Can anyone help out?

So far we have looked in all our nursery books, checked with my grand daughter (she is nearly three), and other parents and grandparents. We have also checked the childrens songs database, and my folk song books.

thanks

No other JBN rhyme than "Jack Be Nimble" in the Opies' Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes.

Are you sure it's not a misprint for JRN = Jolly Red Nose = ODNR 379?
I'm pretty certain there aren't any others with JBN. Teachers aren't infallible you know. They could easily put the same one in twice.

Indeed a favourite -- but scarcely a nursery rhyme, surely, unless we are to include all Lear's Nonsense Verse within that taxonomy! And, if so, what about Lewis Carroll's, Hilaire Belloc's, &c &c &c?

Where are the borders of nursery rhyme country? I've certainly read Owl & Pussycat to children from books of nursery rhymes in my day.

And I'd count rhymes like

When the rain raineth
And the goose winketh
Little wotteth the gosling
What the goose thinketh

in the canon; many's the child I've irritated by answering with that in a meaning tone, and when asked what the feck I'm talking about, just tapped my nose meaningly.

And the same with

God made the bees
And the bees make the honey
The miller's men do all the work
But the miller makes the money.

This has been a fun, and entertaining thread.

It is a thread well posted.

Please ignore "the critic" that briefly released his "Lower kingdom" for a dash of judgement.

"Goosey Goosey Gander wither shall I wander"
Yes I worked that out, but surely it should be GGGWWYW -
Whither will you wander?

Whither will you wander?

Not in the nursery rhyme that I learnt as a little'un nor in any of the bedtime books that I read to my kids. A quick Google search comes up with many examples of "wither shall I wander".
