Now tell me, is Mello Yellow not a ripoff imitation to Rainy Day Women #12 & #35 by Dylan? Right down to the "Salvation army band" arrangement and the whoops and hollars in the background to the obvious drug references in both. Anyone else ever notice this one? Donovan was pretty blatant on this one.

Yeah - and that hat Donovan used to wear - he stole that whole headgear motif from Dylan (who had invented that hat).

Wasn't there a lawsuit about that? - I seem to remember Dylan had copyrighted the whole image thing and sued Mr Leitch's ass... they settled out of court.. which was why Donovan switched to the psychedelia image after about '66.

Hope it helps... ;-)

Cheers

Steven

i was never a big fan of dylan, and only here just recently, i've been downloading some of donavan's music off of morpheus, and he has some really good song, like atlantis, catch the wind, colors, hurdy gurdy man, mellow yellow, and a lot of others, but the hat, i don't know. BOB

Personally I think "Jennifer Juniper" sounds a lot like "My Back Pages".

Donovan and Dylan have both done marvellous work, each in his own way, although Donovan was in the beginning a Dylan-imitator. So what? Dylan was a Guthrie (and various others) imitator. I could never see much point in setting up a competition between them.

I may be among the few who think that Rainy Day Women is only superficially about drugs, but mainly about broader and more important general considerations of life in the latter 20th century.

Mellow Yellow? Yeah, drugs, and a catchy tune.

Donovan? My understanding is that he got sick of the celebrity lifestyle and its demands, and decided to go for a lower profile, although he has done the occasional new recording over the years. I saw him perform at a folk festival in Barrie, Ontario, Canada in the late 80's or early 90's, and he was absolutely great! He has a very distinctive vocal style, with a most unusual vibrato, and his catalog of songs was also most interesting.

Dylan has chosen the opposite approach, touring almost constantly, and that has certainly been a blessing for his fans. I guess for Bob the biggest high is live performance, whereas for Donovan the biggest high may be simply living a quiet private life...but I'm merely speculating about that.

I am not at all certain that Rainy Day Woman was composed before Mellow Yellow. Has anyone checked on that? My old L.P.'s do not show the copyright date and I certainly wouldn't be able to swear as to which came first (even though I purchased the L.P.'s around the time they were released).

Donovan fans, by the way, might be interested in listening to his son's music. His son uses the name Donovan Leitch (Leitch being Donovan's last name) so it gets a little confusing sometimes.

Apparently Donovan released a CD about two years ago. I heard that it was very good, but I haven't heard it. I think he also toured when it was released.

I always liked his stuff.
