Subject: HTML CHARACTERS: REDACT/REDUX
From: JohnInKansas

A previous attempt to post the information to follow ran afoul of my incompetence and my tables fell apart.

I have noted in a few instances that what I see when I proof a text in IE is not quite the same as what I see when it is posted. There has been considerable discussion about how to post "special" characters, which characters work, and which ones don't.

All characters defined in the W3C Committee HTML 4.01 Specification were posted to mudcat in an html practice thread at, and following TESTS (In thread HTML test thread 2 - please ignore.)

Results have been compiled in 8 tables that I will post immediately following. I've kept the tables small enough that anyone wishing to should be able to fit each one on a print page.

Note that what prints may be different than what displays.

Tables to follow.

John

Summary of information in the tables:

WHAT YOU CAN TYPE:

All Latin1 characters display and print as expected.
This group includes all normal "English - US" keyboard characters.
(The soft hyphen does not show a result if typed alone, but this is the intended behavior.)

Three normal keyboard characters have special meanings in html, and should always be coded.
These three are:

& for which you can type & to display the character.
< for which you type < to display the character.
> for which you type > to display the character.

A fourth normal keyboard character, ", can have special meaning.
It may normally be simply typed in text, but you may prefer to code it in text as " to avoid those rare instances when it "misbehaves."

Thanks John, now I won't have to go searching every time I want to use one of these.

I also found that in using two different computers (one has more fonts and special characters) I see things differently on them. One cannot display β, it just prints a little square.

Has anyone seen a list of the most common fonts that people are likely to have on their computers? It seems that even though there are hundreds out there, I always seem to choose one that not everyone has.

Mary

What you see on your computer seems to depend on what default font is set on your viewer. Most people with Windows will have pretty much the same setup unless they have gone in and changed something.

If you copy from the viewer and paste into a Word document, sometimes Word can show you what a "mystery" character is, since it seems to have a better setup for substituting fonts.

One of my thoughts when I put the stuff up above is that maybe people can post what they see and what they don't, so we can have an idea which notes to play to make better music - for all of us.

As to fonts, something in the Times/TimesRoman etc is usually safe. Most fonts in this group have about the same characters. If you don't like serifs, try an Arial/Helvetica.

Those are pretty universal, so usually they'll have nearly all the normal characters. When you go to some of the fancy fonts, you'll sometimes find some missing.

In Windows, you can look at the Character Map (Key Caps in Mac, I think). It will show you all of the normal characters contained in a font. If you see a lot of those little blank rectangles in a font on CharMap, I'd pick a different font for general use.

here is a post from the alt.binaries.fonts newsgroup which lists "standard" fonts that most people have...plus the fonts used by common programs...it is LONG, but you can get an idea of what the defaulst are..

DO NOT DELETE THE FOLLOWING FONTS:

Arial (TrueType)
Arial Bold (TrueType)
Arial Bold Italic (TrueType)
Arial Italic (TrueType)
Avante Garde - Corel Draw
Claren - Print Artist
Courier 10,12,15 (VGA res)
Courier New (TrueType)
Courier New Bold (TrueType)
Courier New Bold Italic (TrueType)
Courier New Italic (TrueType)
Modern (Plotter)
MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)
MS Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)
Palisade - Print Artist
Roman (Plotter)
Script (Plotter)
small fonts (VGA res)
Symbol (TrueType)
Symbol 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)
Times New Roman (TrueType) -
Times New Roman Bold (TrueType)
Times New Roman Bold Italic (TrueType)
Times New Roman Italic (TrueType)
Wingdings (TrueType)
Marlett

Any font which displays the red A should be left on the system. Also leave alone any font that begins with the letters MS...

Micrografx Draw 6 needs Swiss921 BT
Creatacard needs Swiss721 BT
( Creatacard also have fonts that begin with cac - but they can be removed, however, some of your templates will not show up correctly. )

PrintShop uses Marlett
MSIE needs Webdings
Office 97 (including Outlook 98) needs Tahoma
Quickbooks uses four fonts all start with "Quicktype"
MS Bookshelf uses 3 months called Bookshelf Symbols 1-3
MS Publisher - Times New Roman
MS Works - Times New Roman
Microsoft Bookshelf has three fonts called Bookshelf Symbol 1, 2, & 3.
Write - Arial
Wordperfect - Times Roman
Web Browsers - Webdings
MS Word - Times New Roman, Tahoma
Picture It - Comic Sans and Comic BD
****************
Printmaster Gold - Unknown

********
Corel Draw - Posted by Sue Chastain
For CorelDraw, the five mandatory fonts are:
Avant Garde Book BT (TrueType)
Avant Garde Oblique BT (TrueType)
Avant Garde Medium BT (TrueType)
Avant Garde Medium Oblique BT (TrueType)
CommonBullets (TrueType)

****************
Notes:
I also recently pruned some fonts and discovered that Hallmark Card Studio, and Creatacard gold 2 were badly affected. I knew about the SWA and Swiss 721 fonts being needed by Event Minder, but once I had re- installed Hallmark Card Studio, a before and after comparison revealed the missing fonts to have been from the following groups:
AD lib BT
Balloon
Bauer bodoni
Dom Casual Bt
Futura range
Goudy range
Poster bodoni

Further selective deleting by some dedicated individual will no doubt narrow down the culprit(s)! By the way one or more of the above is also needed by Corel Print Shop Magic, as it was also affected. Mary Haggie

I can see almost everything - codes 977 to 8201 display the unrecognised square symbol, and 8206/7 are blank. I'm using IE 5.5 and an English (not US) keyboard & character set.
