OK, thanks for the support on the other thread. By virtue of Stony having a handy building where we can eat, drink and be merry while making a joyful noise, I will attempt *ahem* to organise the gathering in February!

People have already expressed approval for the weekend of the 8th/9th/10th, and York House appears to be free that weekend. I'll therefore go ahead and book it.

I'll be approaching the lovely Bron for any and all wisdom she is able to dispense, given the success of Llanstock. I would welcome all of your thoughts on how to make this a great event, though!

York House is an ex boarding school, and has two floors available for use. There are kitchens appointed for catering on a moderate scale, and an area which is usually fitted out as a bar for weddings etc. The downstairs has been knocked into a large function room. There is a large paddock to the rear which is available for camping of any sort, although indoor camping is also OK. There are a number of hotels and guest houses in Stony as well, and I am willing to accommodate the particulary fastidious ;-)

Spent a few years doing missionary work 'dawn souwf' and have many happy memories of Stony. I used to run the Hogsty Folk Club at Aspley Guise near Woburn Sands and Aylebury Folk Club over 20 years ago !!! Could be interested in coming down. Keep me informed.

Liz, if you are coming (and I as well), may I book the passenger seat of your car?

Gareth, be aware that the sheep will probably not be allowed indoors...

Just to reassure you I haven't done a moonlight flit.

I'm still waiting for the T's&C's from Bob Adams (they guy, you know?). As I said, the cost will be negotiated based on the fact that it's a non-profit event and it's for the whole weekend.

Bob tells me that the rate for weddings and other single evening events is GBP 8 per hour for the building and services. He will reduce this (a lot) for the reasons I've said above, and because he's a folky too (cue for the old Mudcat handshake thread here)

I'll get advice on a bar, certainly we've got a local brewery (well, Northampton) who's very accommodating as well. Similarly, the kitchens are available for our use, so I anticipate being able to throw together some uneatable slop to persuade people into the excellent local hostelries ;-)

Keep the thoughts coming, folks! The more the merrier!

Sounds good. Do we want a scratch ceili band for a ceili?

If the "Folkmobile" is back up & running the wife & myself would love to be there. If the floor is wooden she won't have to bring her stepboard. If banjo players abound, I won't have to sing Appalachian sea shanties;-)

Dai - Eric raises an important point - Ideally we need two spaces preferably apart so that music and song can go on simultaneously (if required). One space could of course be in a Pub :0)

A ceilidh is a great idea if we have sufficient numbers. Even with a small turnout a ceilidh can work if everyone attends for say hour and a half and sings plays drinks sleeps etc before and after the ceilidh.

Looking good so far. Cheers John

Erik, at least I left all the bigger things (sheep, cows, ...) for Gareth and you...

Is it worth boiling or frying a hamster? After taking the hide off and removing all the intestines, there is not much left, and from that you have to consider bones and head, so one hamster is about one bite.

Perhaps if we can get a male and a female hamster, we might have enough meat to feed all participants at Stony Stratford gathering 2003 ...

Lady Penelope, does your comment about Phoebe have anything to do with a noisy scene in and in front of a pet shop in Welshpool? ;-)

Erik t'Vike - I'll post full and explicit (oo-er) details of costs when I get the blurb from Mr. Adams, AKA He Who Must Be Plied With Beer.

For anybody pondering the real Shakespeare connection, Stony Stratford makes a cameo appearance in Richard III... sadly the pub where the shenanigans took place (i.e. where Edward V was captured by his loving uncle, Dick the Shit of Gloucester, and carted off to the Tower) is now a private house with a plaque on the outside.

Attendance Sorry I haven't responded earlier, Dai - I've just got back from a week in Devon, having sung at the Bideford Folk Club, which is great. They had a workshop on harmonising on Saturday, too. Try to drop in the next time you are passing on a Thursday!

Stony Stratford Well done in setting up Stony Stratford! I knew that if someone was willing to take the plunge there would be a lot of interest, wherever it is to be held. As a Stratfordian myself - well, Stratford-upon-Avonian that is - I'm sure I will feel at home! Count me in! I will either be indoor camping or B&B depending on ...

Real Ale It will certainly be worth setting up real ale in the hall for after the pubs have closed (which presumably means that we will need to serve it ourselves, rather than getting a local landlord in). But don't get too much if you intend encouraging people to go to the pubs during the evening! Have you got any local CAMRA members who are folkies? Perhaps they would be interested in setting it up for you? How much was drunk at Llanstock? I think it was 2 x 9 gallons and it ran out. There were only 30 ish people but on the Saturday night we did have the ceili at the hall rather than going to the pubs and a few locals attended aswell. No doubt Llanfair can confirm.

Indoor Camping I guess most people attending will be indoor camping, so having separate room(s) for it will be helpful, enabling people to set themselves up when they arrive and then not to have clear their camp beds away for singing/dancing events each night.

Cost If you are going to cater when people arrive (and a breakfast of cereal, toast, coffee and tea?) and have to pay £100 ish for the hall for the weekend, then there will certainly need to be a charge for everyone, eg £4 per night for indoor camping and breakfast plus £4 for attendance to cover the use of the hall and the meal on arrival. Clearly, you would need to do some more detailed projections but I would have thought that something like that would cover it. Obviously, the beer should be charged per pint to recover the cost, along with any other drinks on offer, such as cider, lemonade and orange juice.

Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry...
Alan

Thansk for all your kind words and encouragement.

Latest thoughts as organisations goes (still no definites on costs yet): If I expect people to arrive in earnest on Friday p.m., then my elves and I can have some nosh bubbling away. Beer will be ridiculously available in the hall, I am to have a 'private chat' with Mr. Ken Daniels, Proprietor and Landlord of the Fox&Hounds regarding 'supplies'. (couple of barrels of Frog/Vale bright and stock the fridges with softies and lager)

What do people feel about having a day trip on Saturday p.m. - to the pub? The said Ken Daniels is willing to put up with us for the afternoon in his comfy lounge, it's also a good place to get nosh of the pub lunch kind.

That would of course give us something to do while the scratch ceilidh band are dutifully rehearsing for the evening festivities ;-) I would expect a good many of our local musical people would drop in to meet you all as well, which would be nice.

A bit of background, the pubs in Stony (with the exception of the F&H) get a young good-time crowd on Saturdays. The F&H has bands on and has excellent Ale so attracts a more discerning crowd. So, if anybody wants to do music outside York House on Saturday we may have a bit of a problem.

Sunday a.m. is almost certainly a handwaved dead loss. At lunchtime there is a session in the (tiny) Vaults Bar (Bull Hotel) until 3 p.m. Anyone still standing can then return to the F&H, the Crown, The Duke of Wellington or York House to continue until no longer able.

Is this the sort of idea?

I'm with you on all of that, Dai, except the ...what was it... practice? ah, re-hear-sal... what mean you by that??

Day trip and pub lunch sounds good, and we'll use York (teeth clenched as I speak the word) House as necessary.

How about the ceili being a communal activity- I think it's a shame when divisions happen and sub-groups form... It would be nice to have singing spots/whatever between dances while dancers and players get their breath back. No, dancing is NOT compulsory!

There could be separate singarounds/ instrumental sessions at other times if participants so wish, but a communal ceili would feel good.

Any thoughts anybody?

The last time I tried to get to Stony Stratford was the morning after a dinner party in Saffron Walden, about 10 years ago. (I'd stupidly agreed to squire my dance team at the SS Day of Dance because I was the squire at the time, although a knee injury meant I couldn't actually dance). I went round Milton Keynes for ages trying to find the road to Stony Stratford. Eventually I ended up on the A5 - going in the wrong direction, but at least I knew where I was then and could turn round. It should be much easier to get to from Harrow (apart from Dunstable being in/on the way).... )for at least part of the weekend. Thanks very much Dai.

Kitty

Dai, you'll have to put a sign over the door: "Sheep must be carried in the House". Or hamsters, of course.

And if Stoney was mentioned by Shakespeare, I'll just remind you that Moll Flanders stopped off at Bow Brickhill (not a milion miles away) on her way back to London.

Litotes, wasn't it Noreen?

Actually I'm looking forward to it for another reason. I think I stayed there years ago on a weekend from college just after it ceased to be a school. The headmaster had been kept on by the new management and was a bit nervous about it all. He was making a bit of a cock-up running the bar so we suggested we just serve ourselves and give him the money. After half an hour he decided we could be trusted and left us to put the money in the till while he went to bed early.

Indoor Camping As most people have yet to state where they intend to stay, is it reasonable to assume that they intend to go for indoor camping?

Music Sessions Judging from the Llanstock experience, there will be a lot of decent musicians attending, some of whom also sing. With the growing numbers (and there's 3 months to go yet!), I'm sure that it would be a good idea to plan for a separate music session in a different part of the building if at all possible.

Come all ye bold heroes, give an ear to my song ...
Alan

PS I am now off for a week in Madiera but, just in case, I shall be taking my singing voice and my concertina with me, as well as my swimming costume and walking boots!
