Do you know any books about the British folk revival of the 60s or the history/development of British folk music which are still in print/available?

Try,

Fairportfolio by Kingsley Abbott for the late 60's. There is another book but that takes things up to the early 80's

Theres a biography of Sandy Denny by Clinton Hylan (??spelling)around, again lots of Fairport input but other snippets regarding the late 60's.

I believe that Ashley Hutching has also got a biography due out, again fairport period but may be useful to you.

Cheers

Sledge

You should be able to find A.L.Lloyd's Folksong in England in a good library, but it is not currently in print. For Scotland The Democratic Muse, by Ailie Munro is still available if you hunt around. (Its worth reading for the chapter on Gaelic Song and the revival by Morag MacLeod alone). There are some threads on a Basic Folk Library which should give you some other ideas:-New Resource: Basic Folk Library and Basic Folk Library Permathread, andA Basic Folk Library Good luck.

On the Revival specifically, there's very little in print.  Matthew mentions Ailie Munro's The Democratic Muse (Scottish Cultural Press, 1996; ISBN: 1898218102) -of course, it's a revised edition of The Folk Music Revival in Scotland (1984), and deals with Scotland only -with particular reference to the influence of the American revival- but is extremely interesting and well worth reading.  Mike Brocken's The British Folk Revival is available online at  Musical Traditions,  as is Mike Sutton's England, whose England? (Class, gender and national identity in the 20th century folklore revival).

The British Folk Revival

England, whose England?

Those should get you started; then you can start hunting for all the out-of-print stuff...

Also at Musical Traditions site, have a look at Brocken's article 'Tarnished Image' and Russ Hatton's delightful critique of it. The former may be found under the 'articles' link on the home page and the latter in 'recent letters' under the 'letters' link.

David Atkinson, English Folk Song is a good bibliography, esp. chapter 1: Revivals.
