OWL'S LULLABY (WHO)

Cho.
Who, Who, Who?
Who will talk to me,
Who will answer me,
Who knows why I sing who?
Who knows the reason why
I sing this lullaby,
Who, who, who?

The owls are flying,
I hear them all crying,
Through the trees and the curtains
As they hurry on home.
With my feet on the limb
And my eyes sad and lonely,
I sing who, who, who?
Cho.

A haunting yodel lullaby sung by Clyde "Kindy" Sproat, ki ho'alu by Karin Halemau in Na Mele Paniolo (Songs Hawaiian Cowboys),album from Honolulu Acad. Arts.
"Learned from an old phonograph record" Who? Whose? When?
@lullaby @cowboy @Hawaiian @yodel

Not able to give it. I have taped it from the album (no longer available? - 1987 and 1992).

A paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy) song collection (cd) from Leabert Lindsay also has this song.
It may have been sung by Jimmy Boyd (1950s). Still looking for information on this ca 1930s song

According to this page, OWL LULLABY was recorded by Jimmy Boyd as a 78-rpm single in 1952. There, it is attributed to Stan Jones.

On this page it is being offered for sale on a CD called "Away Back West Again (Collector Series) 1939-up Volume 55."

Sheet music is being offered for sale here. It says the copyright date is 1952.

The Folk Music Index says OWL LULLABY was recorded by Sons of the Pioneers on an LP called "Lucky U Ranch Radio Broadcasts 1951-53", released 1979 [and re-released as a CD in 2002].

AMG - All Music Guide says OWL LULLABY is performed by Sharon, Lois, and Bram on their album "Sing A to Z". There, it is attributed to "Jones/Morris." I would guess this means they perform a modified version.

You can find a sound sample at Yahoo! Shopping > Music.

Stan Jones is best known as the author of "Ghost Riders in the Sky," originally recorded by Sons of the Pioneers.

I have a CD with the same title as the album cited by Dicho, but it doesn't have 'Owl's Lulluby'. It is a very enjoyable album with a booklet with translations of the lyrics: Various Artists 'Songs of the Hawaiian Cowboy: Na Mele O Paniolo' Warner Western 9 46561-2 [1997]. Clyde 'Kindy' Sproat is thanked in the notes 'for sharing his stories and encouraging us to be Paniolo O Hawaii'.

Jim Dixon- Thanks for the information on Owl's Lullaby- much appreciated. Looks like Stan Jones (and Morris?) are the composers.
The recording by Jimmy Boyd may be the first. Memories are not always good, and the 1930s date assigned by some friends in Hawai'i may be wrong. Thanks again for putting all the data together.

Stewie, the album I have is a 2-tape set of 33 songs and talk story, "Na Mele Paniolo," with large booklet issued in 1987 (reissued 1990 and 1992 with revised booklet) by The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (Hawai'i). The "Owl's Lullabye" is sung by Kindy Sproat, ki ho'alu accompaniment by Haunani Apoliona.
I have the cd you mention, which is a good one, but lacks some of the artists and songs of the tape set, which unfortunately has been unobtainable for some time.

Must be much earlier. Kindy was really old when he died, and he said his momma sang it to him. Ithink look back to 1910-20

The owls are flying; you'll hear them sighing
Through the trees and the curtains as they hurry on home.
With my feet on a limb and my eyes sad and lonely,
I ask who, who, who?

Who will talk to me? who will answer me?
Who knows why I say who, who, who?
Who knows the reason why I sing this lullaby?
Who, who, who?

I call to the sandman but he's awful busy.
His sack's almost empty and he's feeling dizzy.
He wants to go home to go to his bed.
I'm alone with my who, who, who.

I'll try to talk to the clock in the steeple,
But he's far too busy; he just talks to people.
Who knows the reason why? Who can tell me why?
Who, who, who?

Q,

Just realised I missed the last verse of Owl lullaby:

With your head on your pillow, while dreams around you mellow,
And shadows are forming upon your walls,
You're all lost in slumber, while I sit and wonder,
Who, who, who?

Finish:
Who knows the reason why? Who can tell me why?
Who,who, who?

--------------
Sang it at at an old folks retirement home today - they loved it.

This song dates back to the 1870s to -880s and was in the Library of Congress written by Charles Blake in the American Song book- it had been sung thru the years by various artists- some of whome were given writing credit but it was a much older song- along the way various other verses seem to have been added. I am guessing Clyde’s Momma taught him from one of those versions
