Does anybody have some favorite stride/barrel house style piano recordings? I took it into my head to get some, but the CD selling stores don't have it, or don't know where to put it where I can find it. The gumsnappers at the cash register don't have any idea what I'm talking about. The only performer I can think of is Professor Longhair, but that doesn't mean that he's the only one I'm interested in. I can't order from Camsco if I don't know what to ask for. Help!

Hollowfox - I might suggest you check out George Winstons website. He is a big stride piano fan and has a list of recommended CD's to check out. He's at www.dancingcat.com. And check under "influences"

Check out John Arpin, Eubie Blake, and some of Harry Connick Jr.'s earlier recordings. Lots of really good stuff between these three. I'm sure I can think of more.

Search the web for Pinetop Perkins. Many CDs great stuff.

You should go to the originators of the style: James P. Johnson, "Fats" Waller, Willie "The Lion" Smith and "Jelly Roll" Morton (solo piano recordings).

Yes, Willie "The Lion" Smith is at the top of this list.

Butch Thompson has always been my favorite of the new crop of stride pianists. Remember him from the old days of "A Prairie Home Companion?" Check out the blue clicky.
Jim

Some lightning fast piano playing that will blow your mind comes from Art Tatem, a pianiast that, though blind is self taught. Story goes that he taught himself to play a piano roll rendition that required four hands to produce because he didn't realize it was not supposed to be possible for two hands. Fats Waller called him "God." Later Tatem had the ability to replay and improvise on the music of others after only one hearing, probably something that his 'handicap' did for him. I'd look for solo recordings by him rather than band settings, as I suspect a band just slows him down too much.

One name that is missing is Count Basie - he played some good stride on his earlier recordings - but you say you like Professor Longhair? His style owes an awful lot to Leroy Carr and Lightening Slim - suggest you try a budget CD or two before you get into the wrong bag - the stride players referred to are all jazz

Lots of names above I do not know.

Thank you, its a style I would like, but never have, mastered. No doubt there is a lot of good listening ahead.

KazaA and Morpheus have virtually nothing at this moment....unable to "rely on the kindness of strangers" the shekels will need to roll again.

Does ANYONE is this thread actully, play/mastered "stride?"

Butch Thompson is still frequently on A Prairie Home Companion. I don't listen often enough to know if he's a regular now or a frequent guest.
