Between de earth and sky, thought I heard my Saviour cry,
You got a home in-a dat rock, Don't you see?

Poor man Lazrus, poor as I, Don't you see?
Poor man Lazrus, poor as I, Don't you see?
Poor man Lazrus, poor as I, When he died he foun' a home on high,
He had a home in-a dat rock, Don't you see?

Rich man Dives, he lived so well, Don't you see?
Rich man Dives, he lived so well, Don't you see?
Rich man Dives, he lived so well, when he died he foun' a home in Hell,
He had no home in-a dat rock, Don't you see?

God gave Noah de rainbow sign, Don't you see?
God gave Noah de rainbow sign, Don't you see?
God gave Noah de rainbow sign, no more water but fire nex' time,
Better get a home in-a dat rock, Don't you see?

I GOT A HOME IN THE ROCK II

I got a home in the rock, don't you see? (don't you see)
I got a home in that rock, don't you see? (don't you see)
I got a home in that rock, jes' beyond the mountain top,
I got a home in the rock, don't you see?

O, old Lazrus pulled his eye*, don't you see?
O, old Lazrus pulled his eye, don't you see?
O, old Lazrus pulled his eye, when he's dyin' home on high,
I got a home in the rock, don't you see?

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, don't you see?
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, don't you see?
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, all those prophets dead an' gone,
I got a home in that rock, don't you see?

What's that yonder, looks so black, don't you see?
What's that yonder, looks so black, don't you see?
What's that yonder looks so black, mus' be children turning back,
I got a home in the rock, don't you see?

God showed Noah by de rainbow sign, don't you see?

God showed Noah by de rainbow sign, no more water but fire next time,

I errored in the title. It should be "I got a home in-a dat rock." (I got a home in the rock also often used. Any quick fix?

There're gospel recordings by T.C.I. Women's Four (on Warrior on the Battlefiled, Rounder); the Silvertone Singers of Cincinnati (on Best of Excello Gospel); Kings of Harmony (P-Vine)[title is "Home on the Rock"].

The Weavers sang it, too (The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time, disc 1, Vanguard; "I've Got a Home in That Rock").

GOD GAVE NOAH THE RAINBOW SIGN
(I've Got a Home in That Rock)

I've got a home in that rock,
Don't you see? (Don't you see?)
I've got a home in that rock,
Don't you see?
I've got a home in that rock,
Just beyond the mountain top,
Tide me over, Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

God gave Noah the rainbow sign,
Don't you see? (Don't you see?)
God gave Noah the rainbow sign,
Don't you see?
God gave Noah the rainbow sign,
No more water, but the fire next time,
Tide me over, Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

Old Lazarus, poor as I,
Dont' you see? (Don't you see?)
Old Lazarus, poor as I,
Don't you see?
Old Lazarus, poor as I,
When he died he had a home on high,
Tide me over, Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

East and west the fire will roll,
Hide thou me (Hide thou me)
East and west the fire will roll,
Hide thou me.
How will it be with my poor soul,
Tide me over, Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

When the world's all on fire,
Hide thou me (Hide thou me)
When the world's all on fire,
Hide thou me.
When this world's all on fire,
Let thy bosom be my pillow,
Tide me over, Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

The Carter Family, Alvin Pleasant, wife Sara and cousin Maybelle.

Charles Wolfe says, "God Gave Noah The Rainbow Sign ... might have come from an old hymn book, Sara thought, but no likely candidates have so far surfaced." (Notes to The Carter Family: In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain, Bear Family).

The phrase "Hide Thou Me" in the Carter song does not ring true for a spiritual.
I have not seen the versions in Diton, "Thirty-six South Carolina Spirituals"; Kennedy, "Mellows"; or White, "Forty Negro Spirituals."

I like this one, always reminded me of the OTHER Weavers' song, something about I don't want (I don't want=Lee Hayes) to get adjusted (get adjusted=Lee) to this world (to this world) to this world (to this world) - I got a home that's so much better I'm gonna go to sooner or later I don't want to get adjusted to this world. Anybody (masato sakurai?) remember how that one starts?

Mrrzy. Here it is.

I DON'T WANT TO GET ADJUSTED
(traditional hymn)

In this world of toil and trouble;
Sometimes lonesome, sometimes blue;
Yet the hope of life eternal
Brightens all our hopes anew.

I don't want to get adjusted
To this world, to this world.
I got a home that's so much better,
I want to go to sooner or later;
I don't want to get adjusted to this world.

I GOT A HOME

I got a home where liars can't go,
Don't you see?
Jus' between the heaven an' earth,
Where my Saviour bled an' died
I got a home where liars can't go,
Don't you see?

I got a home where sinners can't go,
Don't you see?
Jus' between the earth an' sky,
Where my Saviour bled an' died,
Don't you see?

When the earth begin to shake,
Don't you see?
You better get a ticket or you'll be late,
Don't you see?

Repeat, using drunkards, hypocrites, etc. Sometimes sung "can't find me" rather than "can't go."
H. W. Odum and G. B. Johnson, 1925 (1976) The Negro and His Songs, p. 96, no music.

Lyr Add: DON'T YOU SEE?

I got a home in the Rock,
Don't you see?
Just between the heaven an' earth,
Well, yes, I got a home in the Rock,
Don't you see?

Judas was a deceitful man,
Don't you see?
Well, he betrayed the innercent Lam',
Well, he lost a home in the Rock,
Don't you see?

Well, the sun refuse to shine,
Don't you see?
The sun refuse to shine,
An' the sun refuse to shine, Don't you see?

God don't talk like a natural man,
Don't you see?
God don't talk like a natural man,
He talk so sinners can understan',
Don't you see?

Well, I don't want to stumble,
Don't you see?
Well, I don't want to fall,
I read that writin' on de wall,
Don't you see?

I GOT A HOME IN THE ROCK

You got a home in the rock en don't you see
You got a home in the rock en don't you see
Don't you see way between the heaven en earth
Think I heard my Savior say,
"I got a home in the rock," en don't you see.

Somebody moanin' in dat rock en don't you see
Somebody moanin' in dat rock en don't you see
Don't you see way between the heaven en earth
Think I heard my Savior say,
"I got a home in the rock," en don't you see.

King Jesus in dat rock en don't you see
King Jesus in dat rock en don't you see
Don't you see way between the heaven en earth
Think I heard my Savior say,
"I got a home in the rock," don't you see.
