Subject: Death of the NOVA shanty-sing
From: GUEST,Celtic Soul

Perhaps this has already been posted...if so, I apologize for the redundancy.

However, I have heard that the Northern Virginia shanty sing that used to be hosted at Cates Bistro is no more.

Sad thing, really. I am only now coming off of a lengthy gig period, and would have actually had the time to check it out over the winter months. I realize the one in Wheaton will still be moving along, but I had hopes of making one a little closer to home.

Ah, well. There t'is.

Rest in Peace.

Three times around spun our gallant sing,
Three times around spun she,
Three times around spun our gallant sing,
And sank to the bottom of the sea!

I heard the same thing - sadly. I think the demise of ANY activity such as this is something to be mourned...

Any more on this? I visited them in June and they had quite a gathering. It couldn't be due to lack of interest. Did they lose their venue?

this was posted to alt.faires.renaissance:

"Ship's Company has decided to stop doing shanty sings in Alexandria, VA. After more than 2 years, it never really took off nor found a permanent home. We also noticed that the Alexandria sing didn't seem to draw people who weren't already going to the sing in Wheaton.

We really appreciate everyone's support of the Alexandria shanty sings!"

It seems, as MMario has quoted, that the crowd was a redundant one.

Perhaps if it were a little further away from the Wheaton one, or the Wheaton one were moved to Annapolis or the like, the one in NOVA would have proven an entity unto itself. But, the proximity seems to just have been too close, and so, it was a repeat of the same attendees, and from what I have heard, with fewer gatherers in NOVA than in Wheaton. I would think that there will only be a fairly small and esoteric group in any given area wanting to attend such, and this area already sported one such event (held by the very same group, "Ships Company").

The thing is, it is not really "dead", as it were...it merely insures that the Wheaton sing will be all the healthier, as it will not be dragged out over the course of 2 nights in 2 locations.

I just was hoping personally to not have to make the trek that far, but c'est la vie.

If you play an instrument, have you considered the Monday night sessions at Nanny O'Briens?

Welllll....

I am a passable Bodhran player, and (from what I have been told) I have a very good, strong, clear, nearly operatic voice (though it lends itself better to mens folk tunes than to the breathy leads I am used to hearing in Irish folk from the ladies).

We've all heard the Bodhran jokes though, haven't we! ;D

I might come to listen, however. Thanks for the heads up! :D

Where is the Wheaton one? (Wheaton, I know, but...?)

(She is also very modest about her abilities)

- having heard far more bodrhan then I ever thought might be possible a few years ago- she ranks much better then "passable" -

The Wheaton Shanty sing is held at the "Royal Mile" pub, near the intesection of University Blvd. and Georgia Avenue on Price Street. It is right across the street from a Chevy Chase bank. If you were travelling north on Georgia Avenue from the Beltway, it would be on your right hand side *just* before University. It has a white on blue Rampant Lion awning that is visible from Georgia if you're looking for it. Too bad they took away the red on yellow Rampant Lion...that thing was visible from space.

Again, Look for Price Avenue just before University in Georgia. Best directions I can give ya!

Sorry about this one biting the dust. It's sad, and I hope it at some point finds a new home. Newport News a possibility?
