After winning the Scarborough SeaFest Song for the Sea competition last year I am back by popular demand this year to present the documentary feature film "MAYDAY TUGS OF WAR" in Scarborough on Sunday 20 July at 2.00pm in the Sea Cadets' Hall. This film (which uses my song "THE SHORES OF NORMANDY" about my first trip to sea in 1944 as its theme tune) tells the story of the wartime Rescue Tugs and the men who sailed in them. It also has a couple of very good songs. Anyone interested in maritime history and the story of the men and ships who swaved thousands of lives and millions of tons of shipping, and who also built the Mulberry Harbours in Normandy, should see this film. |

Subject: RE: What's On! (Who is Performing Where) From: GUEST,folkingdotcom live in Farnham Date: 20 May 07 - 05:47 AM Steve Knightley and Jenna will play our final folking.com @ the Farnham Maltings Spring season of shows this Wednesday 23rd May in the Great Hall at the Farnham Maltings. Steve Knightley is the song-songwriter that front's the multitalented trio "Show of Hands" who are undoubtedly one of the UK's most popular and talented folk and acoustic artists. Easter Sunday was there penultimate concert of the year when they sold out the Royal Albert Hall. Q Magazine described Knightley as "a prolific and talented songwriter with an astounding voice, 'vast and windswept". His latest song "roots" was used by many organizations on St Georges day to celebrate Englishness and his new solo album "Cruel River" is receiving critical acclaim from many in the music industry. His material has been featured on the Bob Harris, Mike Harding and Mark Radcliff Radio 2 shows and the current solo tour with up and coming West Country singer Jenna is really gathering momentum. Steve Knightley and Jenna will play the Great Hall at the Farnham Maltings on Wednesday the 23rd of May 2007 Tickets are priced at £12.00 and can be ordered from the Farnham Maltings box office on 01252 726234. Hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm or Saturday 10am to 2pm. Steve and Jenna did a real belter of a performance at the Conford Village Hall on Saturday 28th April. The village hall was packed to the gunnels and we were treated to mix of new songs from Steve's excellent new album Cruel River and Jenna's hotly awaited "Barefoot & Eager". What I loved about the show is the way that the new songs were mixed in with some stripped down SOH favourites. Here is a snippet from the "Cruel River" album review on www.folking.com…. "Steve Knightley's new album "Cruel River" is a very strong piece of work that features well crafted songs and tunes throughout. The album is balanced really well and tracks like "Tall Ship Story" & "Raining Again" ring out with the Knightley trademark Cuatro driving rhythm with "Raining Again" playing out as a sequel to "Country Life". "Poppy Day" and "All Quiet on the Western Front" are fine examples of why the likes of Bob Harris are praising Knightley's song-writing". With the tour building momentum I'm counting the days until they both play the Farnham Maltings on Wednesday the 23rd May. The Great Hall has the capacity for you all to come and see the show (well 454 of you) so let's fill the place and give Steve and Jenna the support their brilliant new albums deserve. Full details at www.folking.com/maltings or tickets available from the Box Office on 01252 726234 |

Subject: 10th June 2007 Fiddle Concert - Tommy Peoples From: GUEST,Beau Webber - KentFolk.com Date: 13 May 07 - 02:31 PM 7:30 for 8pm, Sunday 10th June, 2007; Littlebourne, near Canterbury, Kent: Tommy Peoples will hold an evening fiddle concert at the excellent Littlebourne Thatched Barn , near Canterbury, Kent, CT3 1TU Tommy Peoples is, quite simply, a living legend, the greatest exponent of the driving Donegal style which is his hallmark. Tommy Peoples was an early member of the Bothy Band, and has recorded numerous CDs (discography: a, b). His remarkable self-produced CD " The Quiet Glen" (1998) earned him Ireland's highest accolade as "Traditional Musician of the Year", the first person to be so honored by the Irish Government. Catharine Kingcome, who has painted many Irish musicians in addition to a picture about Tommy, and is a fiddler herself, says of Tommy : "in my opinion probably the best trad Irish fiddle player there's ever been". For myself, I hear a complexity and detail in his playing that I have not heard elsewhere. In spite of this he is an intensely modest man. Tickets: £12 01227 721 736 , 07875 170 593.
