Subject: Lyr Add: THE ESKIMO REPUBLIC
From: GUEST,Nick Kelly
Date: 17 Nov 01 - 06:12 PM

I transcribed these lyrics off of the Eskimo Republic video and I know I have some of the lyrics wrong (due to Jimmy Ross' Scottish accent or maybe it's my ears). Any help...Ewan McVicar are you out there?

Thanks in advance.

THE ESKIMO REPUBLIC

Now good fortunes wheel let its balance (???) roond,
A Nation's rise that yince was doon
So it's time to sing a rebel tune
For the Eskimo Republic

Chorus:
Where there is nay Class and there is nay boss
Nay Kings nor Queens and damn the loss
And we get boozed up for a six-month's toss
In the Eskimo Republic

When they mak a law sure they all agree
For they all sit on the committee
And they got nay Lords nor nay MPs
In the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimos they live in peace
And they've never joined in an arms race
And you'll find nay trace o' a Polaris Base
In the Eskimo Republic

When a Eskie wain gaes tae the school
They sit up nice on their Eskie stool
And they sing and they laugh and they learn the rules
O' the Eskimo Republic

Now their fitball games, they're all clean and fair
And … (can't understand) with the fitball players
Cause the park's patrolled by Polar bears
In the Eskimo Republic

Well they flee aboot in their wee kayaks
And stick harpoons in tae whale's back
Then they cut them up in tae nice wee snacks
In the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimos they are no like you
Every Eskimo's got their ane igloo
And their mother law got their igloos too
In the Eskimo Republic

When an Eskimo sings an Eskie song
He gies it that really auld Eskie twang
And his favorite one is I belong
Tae the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimos they are gay and gallus
And their ig-aloos are their ane wee palace
Because they’re all lit up be the Aurora Borealis
In the Eskimo Republic

Nick, this is what I have - not properly checked, and not against your version, but in an easier format:

THE ESKIMO REPUBLIC
(Anon)

Chorus:
Where there isnae class and there isnae boss
Nae kings nor queens and damn the loss
When you get cruised? freezed? up for a six-months' doss
In the Eskimo Republic

When fortune's wheel it is whirlin' roon'
A nation's rights that yince were doon
Say it's time tae sing a rare bold tune
For the Eskimo Republic

When they mak' a war sure they all agree
For they a' sit on the committee
And they don't hae Lords nor nae M.P.s
In the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimos they all live in peace
And they've never joined in an arms race
And you'll find nae trace of a Polaris base
In the Eskimo Republic

When an Esky wean goes tae the school
They sit up nice on an Esky stool
And they sing and they laugh and they learn the rules
For the Eskimo Republic

Well they flee aboot in their wee kayaks
And they stick harpoons into whaleses backs
Then they cut them up intae nice wee snacks
For the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimo they are no' like you
Every Eskimo's got their ain ig-a-loo
And their mother-in-law's got an ig-a-loo too
In the Eskimo Republic

When an Eskimo sings an Esky sang
They gie it a real old Esky twang
And their favourite one is I belang
Tae the Eskimo Republic

Now the Eskimo they are gay and gallus
And their ig-a-loo is their ain wee palace
And it's a' lit up by the aurora borealis
In the Eskimo Republic

I seem to have missed a verse! Just now I haven't got the time but I'll try and remember to check it again - I think the sound on my my audiotape is of somewhat better quality than on the video.

Thank you, Susanne...as usual...I can count on you. The only verse missing is the football one...part of which I can't understand. Any chance you also have lyrics to The Glesca Eskimos...I can't break that one to save my life.

Nick,

search for 'eskimos' in the forum search and you'll find two threads with the lyrics, one is titled 'Glesga E...' the other 'Glesca E...'

Thanks, Wolfgang...but I've searched and searched and can't find them...maybe I'm an idiot...don't answer that. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I'm having a little trouble finding them too, but here is one:
CLICK
And here is the other--CLICK
I had to use the Forum Search in Quick Links--SuperSearch wouldn't find them. Dunno why.

I've tried many times in the past to dig these up from the forum, but all sorts of searching has always failed... even tho' I remembered seeing the original threads...

Still,

Cheers

Thkx, Nick. None of us (except Seamus, of course!) were actually at our best after all that vile black stuff. Was fun, tho! I really wanted to stay for Sat., but had to get home.

Sorcha--The Sheabeen is very good to me, but I never drink the Guinness there...go with the Caffrey's next time, like me.

Nick, yes, I have the lyrics for Glesca Eskimos - with sizeable holes in them, particularly the last two verses. I'll have to check whether they're in one of the old threads. If not, I'll post them separately.

Suzanne, before you post them, check the links I put in. We do need words to Matt McGinns "Boomerang" though. It is listed on your site, but no link........do you have them stashed somewhere?

Well, I did write 'Forum Search' and not 'Digitrad and Forum Search', but I admit they are easy to mix up. The Digitrad and Forum Search doesn't show recent entries.

There are four (!) sets of lyrics of the Glesca Eskimos in the two threads Sorcha linked to above, including my incomplete version. So if you're interested, please go there.

The football verse is:
The fitba'games are fair and square
'Cause everybody's pals with the fitba' players. And the park's controlled by polar bears in the Eskimo Republic.

Strikes me as one of those songs that should be regarded as 'of its time' and allowed to quietly fade into oblivion.

Absolutely not. Context is all.

I've just recorded my own version of the song (not yet available anywhere!).

I don't see your problem. We Scots, then and now, aspire to live in The Eskimo Republic.
