Subject: Careful wher you sing From: GUEST,Lyle Date: 19 Nov 01 - 02:25 PM Just found this in the news, and knowing how creative this group can be, I thought there would be some insightful, humerous, creative responses. So I'll not try; I'll just listen to you all. Lyle MANILA (Reuters) - One man was killed and another wounded when a brawl broke out in a Philippine karaoke bar over the quality of singing, a local newspaper reported on Monday. A 54-year-old laborer died of a stab wound in a bar in northern Manila early on Sunday after a fight which began when a group of drinkers said the man with the microphone was singing out of tune, according to the Philippine Star. The singer confronted the group and a fight ensued, according to the report. The dead man had been trying to put an end to the fight when he was stabbed in the chest, it added. A 24-year-old garment worker is being treated in hospital for stab wounds, the report said. Recent newspaper reports have said Philippine karaoke parlors have been removing the Frank Sinatra classic "My Way" from playlists because fights frequently broke out when the song was being sung. Monday's report did not indicate which song was playing when the fight began |

Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: Marymac90 Date: 19 Nov 01 - 02:57 PM Wow, I'm glad they don't treat people who sing off key that way at The Mermaid! I think I'm actually getting better at staying in the same key all the way through a song, but it may be a strange-ish key like G#. The trouble was, I was intending to sing in F! Fortunately they have guitarists there who can actually play in G#! The MOST welcoming place for musically-challenged singers is Sacred Harp singing. It's part of their culture to accept everybody who tries to sing, whether they can actually sing or not! Marymac |

Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: Sorcha Date: 19 Nov 01 - 07:59 PM My god, Bob, that sounds like real fun! Maybe you are ready to play the nursing home circuit now? I have always said that if you can play nursing homes, you can play anywhere! |
Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: Amos Date: 19 Nov 01 - 08:29 PM Those guys were so drunk, how would they know? How long do you have to live in a bubble of idiotic machismo before you realize it's really a pretty part-time way of being, and even when you can use it is is usually a second rate solution? Using that kind of barbarian mindset in a karaoke bar is pretty ridiculous, now, isn't it? A |

Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: GUEST,Fiver Date: 20 Nov 01 - 03:15 PM I have been to the Mermaid, MerryMac, and got bounced out for making sarcastic remarks about a certain singer/Songwriter/guitarist who couldn't keep count to save his life--he wasn't an amateur, though--he and his hanger-ons were just making way to much fuss about him, considering his obvious limitations--You probably know him, at least by reputation--if you don't, just tap your foot along with the music and count, you'll find him soon enough! |

Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: Suffet Date: 21 Nov 01 - 07:07 AM Chilino Sanchez was a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles whom drug dealers hired to write songs praising them and their exploits. Hardly anyone had heard of him until one night when a patron of a rowdy club pulled a gun on him while he was on-stage performing. Chilino responded by pulling out his own gun and shooting the assailant dead. By the next day, Spanish language radio stations throughout the US Southwest were playing Sanchez's songs and he literally became an overnight sensation. A few months later, Sanchez himself was gunned down, presumably by one or more pals of the man he had killed. Sic transit gloria! --- Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: Careful wher you sing From: GUEST,Fiver Date: 21 Nov 01 - 10:16 AM Well, that is one way to get to the top--Steve-- Melani, I am on the East Coast, but once lived in the Bay Area, and come back from time to time--haven't connected much with the folk music scene there in a long time, tho I once wrote about it for a local music magazine-- |
