Subject: RE: Lyr Req: For composed song From: katlaughing Date: 20 Nov 01 - 07:31 PM here's info on some Roy Bailey recordings: 10 tracks, 39 mins, highly recommended Roy Bailey is one of England's very finest singers with a voice that is both beautifully melodious and capable of expressing a broad range of emotions. For a long time he has been best known as one of the finest interpreters of contemporary topical folk song but he started his career singing traditional songs and this album reissued from 1976 is mostly traditional. It includes stunningly beautiful versions of Spare Me The LIfe Of Geordie/ Trooper And The Maid/ Lord Franklin/ The Beggar Man and others. Joining Roy's sensitive vocals and guitar are Leon Rosselson/ guitar, Chris Leslie/ fiddle and others. Wonderful stuff! (FS) ROY BAILEY Fuse CFCD 398 Never Leave A Story Unsung $18.98 Originally singing traditional songs Roy later teamed up with the brilliant songwriter Leon Rosselson and subsequently went out on his own performing songs by a wide range of contemporary writers. This, his latest recording, finds Roy accompanied on some tracks by an electric band Stalking Horses for the first time. The band, put together by John Tams who also produced this recordings provides effective and appropriate accompaniment. Several tracks also feature the brilliant playing of concertina/ accordion player John Kirkpatrick. The songs from a variety of English and American writers address a number of pressing social issues and events. There are 3 from Robb Johnson including the rousing Boxing Day - a song about blood sports and Herald Of Free Enterprise about the tragic sinking of a channel ferry with the loss of hundreds of live. There is the lovely David about an autistic young man, who in spite of his handicap, writes songs and poetry - written by Ray Hearne this song use the tune of the traditional Dainty Davie. Other highlights include Jim Woodland's Miracles, Andy Barnes' Last Of The Great Whales, Elvis Costello's Any King's Shilling and others. But they're all good and Roy treats them with the sensitivity and power they need. A powerful and moving set of songs from a brilliant performer. (FS) ROY BAILEY Fuse CFCD 399 What You Do With What You've Got $18.98 15 tracks, 61 mins, essential. Roy Bailey is one of England's great musical treasures .This release is a best of collection featuring 14 tracks from various recordings made between 1975 and 1991 plus a live 1991 recording of Rolling Home. The songs featured are by some of our greatest topical songwriters including Leon Rosselson, Si Kahn, John Pole, Robb Johnson, Jack Warshaw, Fred Small and others. Roy also updates the traditional song Hard Times Of Old England. The arangements are varied ranging from the unaccompanied Patience Kershaw to a full electric band on Send Me Back To Georgia with the wonderful churning accordion of John Kirkpatrick. Other tracks feature the guitar of Martin Carthy, the hammered dulcimer of Fi Fraser and others. If you are already a Bailey fan you will have almost everything here. If you have not heard him before prepare yourself for one of the most eloquent voices in topical song. (FS) ROY BAILEY Fuse CFCD 400 Business As Usual $18.98 14 tracks, 51 mins., recommended. Bailey is a folksinger's folksinger. As he says in the liner notes, these songs are all stories he wants to tell - stories by some of the best in the business. Robb Johnson penned 5 of the songs, including the opener Merrie Olde England with its anthemic line business as usual. With simple guitar accompaniment, Bailey leisurely leads us through songs by Bob Franke, James Keelaghan and Dylan that seem to demand that we sing along. Particularly nice is Leon Rosselson's love song Cobweb of Dreams with Val Bailey on harmonies the way the two sang it 25 years ago. Bailey sings of simple personal hardships and heartaches and love in a way that speaks warmly to audiences everywhere. This clear and sonorous production does him justice. No tricks hereÄjust good songs. (DC) ROY BAILEY Fuse CFCD 403 Past Masters $18.98 18 tracks, 75 mins, highly recommended. Roy has a knack of choosing songs that not only convey an important message but also are excellent songs. This collection is a fine retrospective drawn from 5 albums recorded between 1975 and 1988 that are not currently available on CD and includes John Conolly's Punch & Judy Man, Si Kahn's Curtains Of Old Joe's House, Violetta Parra's Gracias A La Vida, Geoff Pearson's War Without Bangs, Jim Woodland's Ghost Story and others. Beautiful singing from Roy and superb accompaniments from Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, Sue Harris, Chris Leslie & others. (FS)

Subject: Lyr Add: EVERYTHING POSSIBLE (Fred Small)^^ From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 20 Nov 01 - 07:56 PM EVERYTHING POSSIBLE
(Fred Small; © Pine Barrens Music 1983)
Oh you can be anybody you want to be
There are girls who grow up strong and bold
Don't be rattled by names, by taunts, by games
Roy Bailey recorded this on Why Does It Have to be Me? (Fuse Records CFCD 396, 1989), a collection of songs for children. He had this to say about it: "A friend in Vancouver, Marisa Orth-Pallavicini, introduced me to the song Everything Possible, by Fred Small. She has recorded it and I was so moved by it, that I have been singing it ever since I heard her singing it. I have wanted to record it for a long time. Judging by the reactions I have had, it seems many people are moved by what the song is saying." ^^ |
