WHY'N'T YOU SHOUT LIKE YOU KNOW YOU BOUND FOR GLORY?

Why'n't you shout like you know that you bound for glory?
You got to lay down and die some day.

Why'n't you pray like you know you bound for glory?
You got to lay down and die some day.

Why'n't you sing, -moan, -shout, -talk, -cry, -preach, etc.

Sylvester Johnson, Rufus Spearman, Charlie and Sam Hickman, De Ridder LA. John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip, item 116. Click on Links at top of page and go to Lomax Collection for notes and sound.

I found this one of the first times I checked out the Lomax collection on American Memory, over 2 years ago. I loved it immediately! Give a listen folks!

Should be great for a group to pick up & learn.

The above now indexed in the African-American Spirituals Permathread. If more lyrics (with titles other than the above) are added in this thread, please help us index them by posting the song title and thread URL to the Permathread. Thanks.

Rev. J.M. Gates recorded a sermon (two versions) titled "You've Got To Lay Down And Die Some Day" in 1926 (Click here for sound clips).
