Subject: req: A is for Albuquerque
From: GUEST,Cherie Wescott
Date: 26 Nov 01 - 11:20 PM

My grandmother used to sing me a song and I'm unsure of the title. It was about US cities and went in ABC order. I would love the title and lyrics if anyone knows it. All I can remember is something like
A is for Albuquerque, B's for Boston town,
C is for Chicago where the bootleggers all hang 'round...
Does that sound familiar to anyone?

I've asked my real-life folky friend, he says something about it sounds familiar and he'll dig... so wait a bit... it may yet surface.

From: GUEST,.gargoyle

I believe you may be looking for one of my favorites here at the D.T. I've Been Everywhere

It is found at http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=3109

And a small portion goes like this:

I've been everywhere man, I've been everywhere man
Crossed the deserts bare man, I've breathed the mountain air man
Of travel I've had my share man,
I've been everywhere

I've been to Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottowa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, LaPaloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocopilla, Barranquilla, and Padilla, I'm a killer

I've been to Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Ferriday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Okaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennesey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Thanks. I'm sure that's not it though. I think "A" may have been for Anapolis though rather than Albuquerque.

Dear Cherie,

I'll tap into friends this weekend and see what we can up with.

Given the nature of your "remembered lyrics" it appears to be more of a ballad in the style of Fish of the See rather than the recitative I recall from Everywhere.

No luck over the weekend? Any ideas at all where else I can try?

If it helps, I think it might be from the 1920's
