Subject: Sixth Hitchhiker's guide on it's way
From: Steve Latimer

I saw an article in the paper last week when the Mudcat was down. It said that they found an almost finished sixth book in the Hitchhiker's Guide "trilogy" on Douglas Adams' computer. They are currently editing it and plan on releasing it next year.

I just hope it's not like the posthumous Pink Panter movie they made.

What's a pink panter anyway? Some pale skinned guy who gets all hot and bothered making obscene phone calls?

Yeah, sign me up for a copy too! The World's Greatest Five Part Trilogy goes to SIX!

The poor man. He grew to hate the trilogy because no-one ever wanted him to write anything else, and yet, his other stuff is superb. Why do you think he killed Arthur in the last book?

I'm with Liz on this to a degree. "Mostly Harmless" reads a lot like someone saying "FINE. You REALLY want to know what happened to Arthur? CAN'T TAKE A HINT??? HE DIES, ASSHOLE!!!"...

The Dirk Gently books were definitely improving. The first is a wee bit opaque at first (second, third, fourth...) reading, but the second is good stuff. Thor is a wonder.

I read the same article mentioned at the start of this. They also mentioned finding a couple versions of complete HGTTG screenplays and other works in progress or completion on the drive. Shortly after his death, one of the people sorting through his material said there was enough that it may take years to figure out what all he'd written but hadn't either felt was worth publishing or just gotten around to submitting.

Now if only they can get Terry Pratchet to do the clean up and finishing work on VI...

Oh Christ - not Pratchett for God's sake. de Bernieres would be a much bet, surely...

I think someone's been at the pan-galactic gargleblasters again.
this is straight out of the orifices of the Infinite Improbability Machine Corp (inc Dolman Saxlo Shoe PLC).
Does 50% qualify as Douglas Adams? 20%?

Egads, book 5 ("Mostly harmless") was bad enough. As well as that "Young Zaphod Proposes a Toast" thing that's in the collections. Bleh.

I kept waiting for him to do another Svlad Gently book. I have a hard time reading Teatime, though -- it's too too sad. I empathise so much with the Norse gods, all alone and unwanted, up in valhalla, with nobody believing in them anymore. I was glum for days after I read it. It is amazing how he ties up all the loose ends though, ain't it?

As far as I'd heard, the MS for the 6th book was almost complete. Going off of memory, but I believe they said it only required 'finishing'.

Now the question is what they mean by that. 'Finishing' as in correcting typos, breaking into chapters and that sort of thing, or 'finishing' as in 'no ending, characters left at climax without way out, and no hope of resolution'?
