STOP AND TAKE A RIDE (Chariot Wheel)

Cho.
The chariot wheel keep on movin', (3 times)
Lord, I know you want to ride on de chariot wheel.

Oh, step an' take a ride, (3 times)
On the chariot wheel.
Oh, my mother took a ride, (3 times)
On de chariot wheel.
Cho.
My father took a ride, (3 times)
On de chariot wheel.
I know I'm goin' to ride, (3 times)
On de chariot wheel.
Cho.

The Owens Quartet sing another short gospel song, identical in form to Stop And take A Ride; a chorus plus two short verses, which are difficult to understand.

You Better Run
Cho.
You better run (3 times) to the city o' de refuge,
You better run.

You meet those hypocrites on de street,
De first thing they do is show their teeth,
The next thing they do they start to lie,
You better let de liars pass on by.
(2nd verse not understood)
I got a father in de promised land,?
This may be part of a longer gospel song.

I've got a recording of this, too, Dicho... I wish I wasn't so rushed for time these days... I'll see if I can find it and post the lyrics.

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat.

And I'm afraid I am, too..

Gettin' ready for the King..

Jerry

"You Better Run to the City of Refugee" sung by Rev. J.C. Johnson is on Wade In the Water, Volume 2 (Smithsonian Folkways). Two versions are quoted in Peters, Lyrics of the Afro-American Spiritual (p. 301, p. 302).

The above now indexed in the African-American Spirituals Permathread. If more lyrics (with titles other than the above) are added in this thread, please help us index them by posting the song title and thread URL to the Permathread. Thanks.

~Susan
