Watched the PBS show on Sun Records last night. It was fabulous. We can talk more about observations later if anyone wants to, but in looking for more info this morning, I found this website:

www.carlperkinscelebration.com

with information about (and an MP3 of)

"'The Fireman', a never-released recording, [which] was the last Carl Perkins made before his death in January, 1998. Never more than now could the prophetic track be more appropriate, serving as a stirring ode to firemen, hundreds of whom perished at the World Trade Center. Written by Bob Johnston and Perkins, "The Fireman" recording languished in Johnston's garage for years, until now."

Check it out. And if you saw the show last night, what did you think?

Dani

It was about Sam Phillips and the Sun label. Included session musicians and almost-stars of that era reminiscing, a little history, LOTS of great music. Parts of a tribute album (where IS that) including the likes of Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Paul McCartney, some hip au courant bands. They pay homage to the style and the artists. Great dishing, and reflections on the music, race, commercialism. Good stuff.

Last month's Smithsonian magazine included a teaser with a photo of Cash, Lewis, Presley and Perkins standing around a piano in an impromptu gospel session. That wasn't covered, and I haven't had time to look for it, but I would travel very far and pay a pile of money for such a recording.....
