Here it is two days to go, and due to what we;re doing, I decided to open the package from Fibula Mattock this evening. It took a long time to arrive for some odd reason, about 3 weeks in the mail, so I decided to wait until Christmas. I almost made it, but I wanted to see what it was and say thanks now in case I didn't have time later.....not that there's a big rush or anything. In any case, I'm glad I did because I don't know what to say about this book.

Fibs, what a WONDERFUL gift!!!! It is indeed like sending a bit of yourself...a truly excellent piece of work. The book is Blooming Meadows, The World of Irish Traditional Musicians. ANd that is the key...it's about musicians as much as music...moreso. I've leafed through and read several chapters and I am hooked. There is alwys more to music than music. Music is about the people who make it and who they are, what they bring........The phots are equally compelling as you can hear music and see real living in the faces. Great photographer, captures a lot. I cannot express my thnaks any better than to say that this is the finest possible gift for anyone to receive. The giver shares a part of themselves and it don't get better than that. (Mick would die for this book....if he's nice, I might share)

And now.........Also in the package was a chocolate bar which lasted something in the neighborhood of 37 seconds. We all tried a piece and when I turned around again, the boys had offed the rest! But here was more...a gift for Spaw....with Spaw in mind....and in the air.....A flatulent (or worse) gift that Fibs knew I would appreciate. I now have this little Santa guy, real cute smile, a bit bent over, and when you press him down........................yeah, you got it....he craps a little "pellet" out his ass! Fibula was nice enough to send pretty red and green sugar candy pellets, but she also sent a refill pack in the more "traditional" brown. This too was a big hit with the boys and I can see Old Nick poppin' out a few when we have guests.

Fibs, I cannot say thank you enough. A fantastic present and now I feel really bad that I didn't get the other stuff shipped to Blackcatter.....but he did like the CD so that's something.

I'll post this on both threads and get a picture to Mary ASAP.

Spaw

Oh boy!!! I decided since it was Xmas Eve, Santa would overlook my opening your present...( he will, won't he?).I'm a bit overwhelmed and a bit teary to be honest, what a treasure haul!Barbara,I honestly can't thank you enough. I opened one beautifully wrapped package,to find loads of equally beautifully wrapped little parcels...now sit back and make yourself comfortable, this is going to take a while. On the first day of Xmas, Lyrical Lady sent to me:
a package of maple tea ( I love herbal teas and have never even heard of maple tea)
A cd by Valdy Smorgas Bard..which I am playing right now and LOVE!
A tin of smoked salmon pate...my favourite, I can't think how you might have guessed that!
A little hand-made soap in the shape of a sheep...far too good to ever use!
Stones and shells from the beach....including a stone with a hole in, so I am going to look for a piece of ribbon in a minute so I can wear it...and a wishing stone and a good luck charm and a lovely piece of sea polished glass
a map of where LL comes from, and some cards from the local area....pretty enough to frame
and a 'friendship bag'...this was where I got teary...which has all sorts of useful things like a quarter to make phone call, a marble ( for when I lose one of mine), a candle, a happy face sticker and a little umbrella for "singing in life's showers".

I feel blessed, spoilt and blissful....thank you Barbara, thank you Clinton for a brilliant idea and thank you Max for thinking up the Mudcat Cafe.( Oh dear, this is getting a bit like an Oscar speech).Merry Xmas to everyone and, yes,Mary, I will send a picture when I find the camera.

Well, the REAL secret part of my classic margarita recipe is using the Jamaican Gold preserved lime juice -- otherwise it's easy as 1-2-3! (And I really AM a purist -- Triple Sec, please, not Curacao or Grand Marnier -- though a friend and I did manage to reach a new plateau of euphoria on my recipe made with a very, very expensive tequila, blue Curacao, and Jamaican Gold lime juice! Pretty, too!)

Just remember, the food rules assure us that anything eaten along with a margarita has no calories -- and the corollary is that a margarita, if drunk in the morning, counts as fruit juice.

Happy Christmas!

Linn

Perfect timing! I came home from visiting my Dad in the hospital. He is not good and I was worrying about what we do next. And there it was! MY SECRET SANTA package shedding enough rose potpourri to create a permanent anthrax scare at the local post office.

Peg is my SS. A selection of tiny packages was nestled in a handful of miniature rose buds. So very pretty! First I opened the CD - Rory Black "Gone Woman Blues". It is on now. The title tune is a tribute to Nicole Brown. This lady can sing! Max would love her if he doesn't already have a copy.

Next, a teeny package about an inch by an inch and a half containing a complete set (12)of tiny colored pencils. I love tiny things and this has joined my collection of miniatures on the mantepiece. There is a bar of handmade soap (sandalwood?) and beautifully wrapped packages of incense coils. And the final treasure: a dream catcher. Strange but true, I am caring for some cats while a neighbor is away. She has a dream catcher made by her and her boyfriend from feathers collected on hikes and from their friend's exotic birds. After admiring it, I decided to get one for my new home in Portland. And here it is. All this with a beautiful card showing a young girl escorted by elves and mice and birds and carrying the advent candle.

Thank you,Peg. I feel restored. And thank you Clinton for making the Secret Santa happen. Pictures to follow. Mary.

I haven't received secret santa gift yet... but then again, I told my secret santa not to worry about a silly thing like dates on a calender.

The one and only message from my SS, back in November, was that the elves were knitting me a book (sounds lovely, but altogether too stress inducing -- typos [stitchos?] must be a real pain in elven keesters)!

I'm more worried about the fact that I haven't heard anything from my SS than I am about lack of mere stuff in my mailbox... Is she or he okay, and not fallen into a hole somewhere? Is her or his computer still working? Are the phones still working? Etc. Etc.

If Elf Karen or Pseudolus (or any detective-minded 'Catters out there) know who my SS is, could you please check to make sure everything is copecetic?

BTW, I was Big Mick's Secret Santa... the only pictures of me that I have were taken in July of '95... not very Christmassy, but if they'll do, I'll send them in...

I've also not received my SS gift -- but my Secret Santa has been in touch with me and everything's okay and I did my best to give him a guilt-free Christmas.

It's good to spread out the cheer to Old Christmas and even to Robert Burns' birthday. (And to be fair, neither my sister on the other coast, nor my brother in the heartland has found time to post their packages to me, either -- we're REALLY gonna drag it out this year! And Mom just finished her baking and candy making so the eatables will coincide with the "late" presents!)

In the bleak midwinter? Not this year -- we're gonna party all January!

"In the bleak midwinter? Not this year -- we're gonna party all January!"

Way to go, Linn!

By "old Christmas" do you mean January 6th, or Candlemas (February 2)?

I remember reading a children't book years ago that talked about all the festivals in Europe of the Middle Ages between Dec. 25 and Feb. 2. I think it was called The Long Christmas.

Morty and Sinsull...

Yer very welcome, but Sinner... I didn't make the SS happen.. I just suggested it... the credit for making it happen should really go to those who took it upon themselves to run the thing, and to host the picture site afterwards, so we can all enjoy everything...

You know who you are! Stand up and take a bow!

Next year, come hell or Hyperboreans, I'm gonna be involved! I don't care if I'm living in a cardboard box!

*shaking fist at sky* Lousy gods!

Now if I can just:

1. Get rid of this sinus headache before tonight . . .

2. Not eat all of the pickled herring in sour cream before tonight. (No -- that has NOTHING to do with the headache!)

3. Keep my cat's tush off the keyboard while I type this.

Old Christmas, January 6th -- but why not keep going til Candlemas? With Robert Burns' BD on the way? (I'll resist the temptation to turn this into a haggis thread . . .)

ClintonHammond -- If I could, I'd mail you a great big hug for Yule! (meanwhile, I'm singing "I'm gonna mail myself to you" found in DT here)

But, um: "come hell or Hyperboreans"? Weren't they the people who the ancient Greeks believed lived north of the north wind, where they were out of the reach of cold and storms, so that their land was always sunny and warm? Wouldn't having them come around be helpful (unless of course, their whole life-is-beautiful-and-we're-beatiful-too attitude would drive you straight up the nearest wall)?
