Geeze, what a joke! As if radio stations don't have a small enough play list as it is.

1)old news.

2)suggestions to refrain from playing does not equal "banned"

3)the intent was evidently to prevent lyrical images from further distressing people already tense from the 9-11 situation (a misguided attempt in my opinion)

...Clear Channel maintains that this list was a "grass-roots initiative" from its employees rather than an order or a suggestion from the top down.

More spin from an evil Walmart of the radio waves, I expect.

A lot of the songs on the list just plain don't make sense. Anything with a reference to airplanes, fires or who knows what... "Ironic"???"What a Wonderful World"???--apparently the human condition. It reads as if they polled a thousand people on Sept 12 and asked "What song do you hate the most?"

However, any "do not play" list that includes "Eve Of Destruction" has my approval for that selection.

the list has been floating around the internet since what, 9-13? It's still old news. The fact that Harpers didn't manage to print it until this month doesn't make it new. Nor does it make the "banned" true.

regarding written in stone - not at any job I've ever held. My bosses have all been honest enough that suggestions are suggestions. Orders on the other hand are indeed orders and the two are clearly different.

Plus - as mentioned by Willie-O; almost immediately it was announced that this wasn't a "top down" directive - nor did most of the stations pay it much heed (from all reports). I think circulating a memo saying "Hey - remmeber there are people hurting out there and consider how some songs might make them feel" would probably have done more good. And wouldn't have given us this "banned songs" list that will probably be hanging around for 20 years

Infighting aside, can anyone come up with the rationale behind not playing "Bridge Over Troubled Water?" I always perceived it as a song of comfort offered. I would have thought they'd play the heck out of it. Same goes for "Imagine." And "American Pie?!" Some (most?) of the choices I can understand, even if I don't agree with such a list. I would like to never hear some of these again myself, but not because of what happened on September 11.

Theres a difference between saying what was posted was posted before and acting pious with this Old News stuff.
This is supposed to be a friendly site.
If you don't want to contribute the thread subject, don't. But attacking the person who posted with Grow up is not the point.
I'm sure you can find other sites for that shit.

I believe Barry McGuire IS folk and that this topic is worthy of discussion.
Some of these songs would be insensitive to play but most of them are harmless.
Is it not scarry that people believe that censership is nessesary?

raptor - sorry if I snapped - I have deleted this list so many times now from e-mail - seen it multiple times in every newsgroup and forum I go to - even ones that don't normally discuss ANY music.

My point was - they weren't ever "banned" in the first place - (so I'm already irritated at seeing repeatedly a falsehood) - secondly - the list was (reportedly) generated in a voluntary effort to decrease bad feelings - but seems currently be being used mostly to stir up bad feelings.

Thirdly - if you look at the songs in the list from the point of view of a someone trying to prevent mental anguish (granted - to a ridiculous point) those songs do contain lyrics that could be disturbing in the wake of 9-11. "Bye - bye American..." fire/planes/death, etc.

and lastly - I apologize that you took my posting to be a critique on your posting. I was offering my comments and opinions - which is what I *thought* you were asking for.

Raptor, you asked for feedback, and MMario gave you feedback. What's the problem?

It is old news, and much ado about nothing, in my opinion. As far as I ever knew, this was just an attempt to be sensitive to people's feelings in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. Maybe each of us would have written a different list (if we felt this was a good idea to begin with), but trying to cast this as some oppressive new censorcism initiative, as many have done, really misses the point.

I don't know all of the songs on the list, but I could definitely use a break from most of the ones on there that I do know. Modern radio has beaten them to death already.

Cool
But the fact is if you just broke up with someone you don't listen to country stations cause youre gonna hear breakup songs and stir up some bad feelings.
These stations are listened to all over not just New York.
I'm not saying that you should play songs like Its the end of the world to be funny but most of these songs have nothing to do with tradgity.

raptor - believe me - I post under my own name. with the rare exception that I pull out Cleigh's sister Dido (who most people know is me) or situations like the secret santa thread. if I post from someone elses computer I post as guest, MMario - or state that it is I posting from so-and-so's computer.

The WTT disaster on 9-11 had people WORLD WIDE in emotional shell-shock. One or two WORDS can trigger devastating emotional storms. If you haven't seen it happen to someone you care about - or even specifically over 9-11; you are very lucky. I have, too many times.

I still think the effort to restict the airplay was misguided - but it was well intentioned and not completely off the wall.

Raptor, whoever you are, you asked for feedback. You got it. No one agrees with you, including not me. Got a problem with that? You have not identified an instance of "censorship."

And Eve of Destruction is (1) not a folk song; (2) lousy; and (3) one that I, too, would "suggest" nobody play, had I but the power of suggestion. O.k.?

my apologies raptor - because the whole situation got aggravated via my responses. The list *is* a bit overdone - isn't it?

I don't know all the songs - but the ones I do know I can usually spot the lyrics they thought might be "triggers" - sometimes it is just the title, sometimes a phrase somewhere in the song.

"A Sign of the Times?" "Morning Has Broken?" "What a Wonderful World?" Hard to figure how they got on the list.

I've always rather liked "Eve of Destruction" (which is easy to understand being on the list). Yeah, it's a little overdone, but it's not badly crafted and it makes some good points. I seem to recall hearing that it was the first protest song on the pop charts.

and as for banned hey it's the press, where's the headline in "suggested" when BANNED get's your attention

Remember the the age old adage "print the truth, as long as it sells print"

As for peoples knee jerk reaction to this thread etc,

Smile people and count to 10

Raptor, don't be buzzed off by this. I am in your camp here. The very thought of banning song, poems, art, movies, or expression I find reprehensible. Commonsense and good taste do come into play here at some point.

Don't confuse editorial policy with censorship, it isn't. Don't confuse a suggestion not to play as banning.

Old news is only old news to the people who heard it first. It is correct to react to what you hear when you hear it. Even if it is days, weeks, later on than when others heard it first.

Even if we are contentious here at times we are all observers of the human consition and many of us think whats best for one is best for all, we have the best of intentions. Come on along, the road to hell will at least be crowded with great musicians.

Don

In answer to Big Daddy's question about "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", there is the line in it containing, "Sail on silver bird...etc.". In view of this and many other songs shown in the list, I have to admire the remarkable creativity of thought that went behind its compilation - even if I don't at all agree with the premise.
