BORN AGAIN

Cho.
I know, Lord, I been born again, (3 times)
I know I got religion an' born again.

I tie my hames to de gospel plow,
Wouldn't take nothin' for my journey now.
Cho.
Way down yonder, I come through,
You had-a been there, you'd a-shouted too.
Cho.
He give me the gift an' He told me to go,
Give me the horn an' He told me to blow.
Cho.
So glad, born again,
I'm so glad I been born again,
I'm so glad I been born again,
I'm so glad I been born again,
I know I got religion and born again.
Cho.

Ben Donner, near Livingston, AL. Cho. sung twice at beginning.

Lyr. Add: Born Again

Lyr. Add: You Must Be Bornd Agin

You must be bornd agin, agin;
You must be bornd agin;
Without a change, you can't be saved;
You must be bornd agin.

"From East Tennessee; mountain whites; from memory; 1912"
With music. E. C. Perrow, 1913, "Songs and Rhymes from the South," [2] Jour. American Folklore, vol. 26, pp. 123-173, IV Religious Songs and Parodies of Religious Songs, no. 9.
Also on line at Mehlberger website, www.immortalia.com: Immortalia

Lyr. Add: Ye Must Be Born Again
1877; Music George C. Stebbins, words William T. Sleeper

A ruler once came to Jesus by night
To ask him the way of salvation and light;
The master made answer in words true and plain,
"Ye must be born again."

Refrain:
"Ye must be born again,
Ye must be born again,
I verily, verily, say unto thee,
Ye must be born again."

Ye children of men, attend to the word,
So solemnly uttered by Jesus the Lord;
And let not the message to you be in vain,
"Ye must be born again."

O ye who would enter that glorious rest,
And sing with the ransomed the song of the blest,
The life everlasting if ye would obtain,
"Ye must be born again."

A dear one in heaven thy heart yearns to see,
At the beautiful gate may be watching for thee,
Then list to the note of this solemn refrain,
"Ye must be born again."

Cyberhymnal, with midi: Born Again

(Rumor only that our glorious leader opens his meetings with cabinet with a verse of this?)

Lyr. Add: NEW BORN AGAIN

Refrain:
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Newborn again.
Been a long time talkin',
Bout a startin' on de way.

1. Free grace! free grace! Free grace, sinner!

2. Free grace! free grace! free grace, brother!

3. Free grace! free grace! free grace, sister!

4. Free grace! Free grace! free grace, mourner!

With music.
William E. Barton, D. D., "Old Plantation Hymns," New England Magazine, Dec. 1898, vol. 25, issue 4, pp. 446-447.

"It was in Alabama, by the way, that I got the song "New Born Again," whose rising and syncopated "Free grace, free grace, free grace, Sinner," make the grace more ample with each repetition. It has a certain dignity combined with light joyousness which our Gospel Hymns often strive for in vain. Indeed, there are several things for us to learn from these songs."

The first of three important articles by Barton on hymns and melodies of African Americans, most with music, in the New England Magazine, 1898-1899.
