Subject: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Steve in Idaho Date: 10 Dec 01 - 09:59 AM Only thing (Clik) I could find on it here. Anyone familiar with this and where I might locate how the tuning goes, current musicians, past musicians, - - Thanks Steve |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 10 Dec 01 - 10:19 AM A Google search brings up lots: like this. RtS (me, I know nothing, but I can usually find someone who does!) |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 01 - 10:29 AM Hi Steve, there is a fair bit available on the net. You could try the following sites for starters. Dancing Cat has some excellent albums available: Click Here and Here --Stewie.

Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: M.Ted Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:01 AM There are a great many Slack-Key Tunings--each performer tends to have a favorite, and some keep them secret-- Keola Beamer doesn't, and tends to list the tunings that he and the other players use on his recordings (Wooden Boat, particularly, is worth many listenings). He often uses "C Wahine" tuning, which is C-G-D-G-B-E-- |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:16 AM Stewie, couldn't get the acrobat version in your 1st clik. The html is OK. Is something incorrect in the site, or is it my problem only? |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Steve in Idaho Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:31 AM Thanks all - got what I needed - I appreciate it - Steve |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:31 AM Dicho, the link works fine for me. I don't follow your reference to 'acrobat' - it does appear to require acrobat. The 'full length history' is very informative. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Stewie Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:36 AM Dicho, I meant to say 'does not appear'. I don't understand this computer stuff - the acrobat reader pops up on my machine when it is required and does not appear to be required in this instance. Anyhow, Norton seems to have got what he wanted. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 10 Dec 01 - 11:45 AM Stewie, in the Dancing Cat site, there is a click for an information booklet on the left hand side. You are offered a choice of HTML or Acrobat formats. The booklet has much more information than the page you put the clik for. The html version is fine, but I couldn't get the acrobat version to function. |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Steve in Idaho Date: 10 Dec 01 - 12:27 PM Yes I did get what I needed and all of the links worked very well. I think one gets a choice of how to set up for printing. Adobe allows for printing just the words where a direct hit with the printer gave me the pictures as well. Very informative and just what my friend wanted. Bless you - Steve |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Rick Fielding Date: 10 Dec 01 - 12:47 PM Ted, I LOVE that tuning! Bugger, thought I'd invented it! I use it for a verrrry mellow "Chacaunne"(sp) Thanks, Norton Rick |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Jeri Date: 10 Dec 01 - 01:01 PM Dicho, the .pdf version takes a long time to load on my computer. If your Acrobat pops up, just go make a sandwich or something. I downloaded the on-line sample lesson. Thanks, Stewie! |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: M.Ted Date: 10 Dec 01 - 02:46 PM I am sure, Rick, that you use it in a different sort of way than Beamer does. I used to love to fool around with those slack-key tunings, but, being the wonk that I am, I tried every one that I could find, and after a while, I got overloaded and couldn't remember which tuning I played which tunes in-- For years, I have been trying to figure out the tuning that Gabby Pahinui used for a version of Aloha Oe from about 1958 or so--He opens on what seems like a big G13 chord, but I've never been able to figure what the open chord was-Talk about the search for the Holy Grail-- Mark Cohen may be able to confirm this, but Bob Gleason, who made my ukes for me, tells me that the contemporary slack key players in the Islands gravitate toward Ovations--Sort of the guitar equivalent of "Spam"-- |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: Rick Fielding Date: 10 Dec 01 - 04:27 PM Ted, I relate. I often come up with weird licks and tunings but like a dork I don't write them down. Poof....they're gone! Is it possible his open chord is D13th? Rick |
Subject: RE: Help: Hawaiian Slack-key tuning From: M.Ted Date: 10 Dec 01 - 05:14 PM I don't think it is a 13th, because the sound shows up only in the intro, and, if memory serves, as a dominant--I think the tuning gives you that sound with only one or two strings fretted-- Here is the approximate sound: 3-x-3-2-O-O--keep in mind that it is on a 12 string-- |
