Ah.ve noticed that every so often somebody complains aboot non-music threads oan the mudcat.Tae my way o' thinkin,wi' the search engines daein sic a braw job these days ye can get the words o' jist aboot oneythin jist wi' typin the keywords intae them, especially Google. Will this make the mudcat obsolete?
Ah dinnae think so as the discussion oan the origen an' an' ither related stuff makes the answer tae enquiries mair interestin.
Mudcat has evolved intae a worldwide "club" o ' blethers. As ah hae mentioned afore"ye guys will gab oan aboot oneythin"
Even in a room fu' o' musicians the the talk disnae stick tae music.Tae me it is like in the pub ,where ye never know whit will come up next.It could be the state o' the economy or the problem wi' bunions.
That's whit makes it sae interestin. If it wis jist music it wid be pretty sterile.Even the idjits perk it up a bit,an' if they get oot o' haun we can set Spaw oan them wi'his marvellous command o' the language!.
The amount o' posts alane shows the popularity o' the mudcat.
That's it for me again. ljc

Have you ever noticed how often a lyric search will send you straight back to the mudcat or the digital tradition?

Also - if it isn't on the web - no amount of searching will find it - but a question here may well get it for you!

Could not agree more with the analogy LJ. So many discussions about music related topics such a playing and instruments and even into the moden approach to saving tunes through midi's and such, are as integral to this place as the song searches, many of which we do although the words could be easily found. The benefit of doing the search instead of saying, "Find it yourself" is in the stories and background that often are added after the song is found, which is generally pretty quickly.

As to the BS, the topics are so wide and varied and yet, in the main, show the divergency of many of us here and add to the fabric of the 'Cat which is comprised of multi-faceted people.

LJC - Catters may not realise that there used to be, and maybe still is, a newspaper in Scotland called the Sunday post, which was written just the way you do!!!!

Does it still exist?

Ian B

Jings Crivvens and Help ma boab!!!

Of course the Sunday Post still exists!!! "Oor Wullie" is the only 70 year old still living with his parents and with a policeman older than he is. And in "The Broons" the bairn is old enough to have great-grand kids but still pops round to Granpaw's fora drink of pop!!!

It still only prints the front pages and the sports pages on the Saturday evening. The rest is pre-printed days in advance. And tt still recycles the sames stories every now and then under a different guise. Psuedo-editorials prefixed "A Glasgow reader was on a bus the other day..." will reappear weeks later with the line "On a Dundee bus the other day a reader heard....".

A Scottish institution if ever there was one.

Well if Clinton can't be bothered reading it, why is it any bother to him if it's there or not?

I'm reminded of the complaint made about nude bathing by a distant neighbour of the bathers. "But it's so far away you couldn't see anything anyway!" "Young man, have you never heard of binoculars?"

My sincerest drunken apologies, Clinton. I WAS rather taken aback when I read your post as it was SO out of character. Perhaps more focus and less "It's Friday and thank Baccus for that" ? Back to class for me... nudder brew first, though.

For what it's worth Clinton, I didn't read it either. And no McGrath,it didn't bother me one way or the other.
To me reading and comprehension shouldn't be an ordeal, otherwise I'd be on Russian Mudcat.

I think we should buy Clinton a subscription to the Sunday Post for Christmas.

Does Oor Wullie still sit on that damn bucket, then?

ooh sorry, sociologial/commercial note. This is no longer the case, but in the 1970s-80s the Sunday Post was so much of an institution in Scotland that it was the only newspaper * not * to tout its circulation figures to would-be advertisers... in fact, the figures were secret. Any company wishing to advertise was greeted with the proposition that 'you know we're the biggest-read paper in Scotland, and that's all you need to know - where's your money?'

As for its writing 'style' - will 'couthy' do, LJC?

Gee LH. No wonder we seldom agree. We are almost complete opposites. Let me demonstrate by using your post...

Mah back hurts, I wisht I had mair muney, mah parents dinna understan' me, Ah'm gittin' auld, mah sex drive isn't whit it once was, Ah suffer from insomnia, Ah've got bad eyesight, mah hair is gettin' a wee bit thin in front, Ah'm overweight, life is hard, I'm not havin' as mich fun as Ah would like, and mah heroes have awl fallen frae their pedestals, leavin' me bereft wi' nithin tae git excited aboot anymore!

Pretty convincing attempt at "Braid Scots". But "all" should be transcribed as "aw'", and "fallen" as "fa'en".

Thus, "Mah heroes have aw' fa'en frae their pedestals".

The effort required to raise the tongue to the roof of the mouth in order to sound the letter "L" when sandwiched between two vowels is simply too much trouble for the average (lowland) Scot ;-)

Clinton, if you continue to be "ironic" on Mudcat, I'm gonna have go upside your head!!

For what it's worth, Little John can doff his dialect at the drop of a sporran. Back in the strange ould days he sounded just like Walon Jennings!

Compaints? Do I have any complaints about MUDCAT? GOOD GRIEF NO! As far as I'm concerned, this is bloody wonderful. The only complaint I could conjure up refers to my own lack of time. There is so much I'd like to post, like several hundred songs. But that complaint has to rest with me, not MUDCAT. Thanks Max, CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson
