Subject: NorwegianTradMusic-ViolinSheetMusic?
From: catspaw49

Connie called me and a friend is looking for sheet music to "traditional Norwegian songs" for Violin.

Don't ask.

The friend has a friend who lives in Minnesota and says it's just everywhere! Well.....This ain't the home of Norwegian Bachelor Farmers down here in Ohio.....mainly we're just shitkickers......but does anyone know any traditional Norwegian songs? And if so, is there sheet music available on the net?

Any information regarding the music of Norway would be welcome here. Anything. From Anybody.

Bueller.....Bueller....Bueller....

Jim Dixon? Anyone across the pond? I'll have them check in here with possibly more info and/or an e-mail addy and name, but I would personally appreciate anything y'all can come up with. Thanks.

Spaw

The Waltz Book I has one called 'Finn Jenta', and the Waltz Book II has one called 'The Norwegian Waltz'. They're not specifically for fiddle, but I don't see any reason why they couldn't be played on fiddle.

Both books are collected and edited by Bill Matthiesen and can be ordered from him at...

33 Stormview Road
Lanesboro MA 01237
(413) 442-9172

...according to the information in the back of the books.

Thanks Carol...it's a start. And I agree, the idea of specifically fiddle music is a bit beyond it....any sheet music will work. 'course when anyone says "trad" I tend to think that there isn't much "sheet music." (:<))

Actually, Spaw, there's a lot of sheet music for trad that's passed around from one person to another. Sometimes people transcribe a piece they know in their head and then photocopy it to pass around. And there are a lot of books out that have trad music from different countries. Sometimes having sheet music helps people learn new pieces a lot faster at jam sessions than they might otherwise.

Oh I know Carol, it was just a joke as trad=oral/aural tradition....Thought the smiley face was enough....sorry.

Yeah, I found a lot of sources on Google and a couple of excellent sheet sites, but I was hoping that someone here might have some more detailed info, specifically on the net.

It's not your fault I didn't get your joke. I think it's a lack of brain function on my part.

Spaw, does she mean by "traditional" the Hardanger Fiddle? That's considered the national instrument of Norway. (Some think it was meant to sound like a bagpipe.) If that is what you are looking for, use any search engin to find Hardanger Fiddle, and you will find several references to chapters of the Hardanger Fiddle Society in United States. Write or email any of those, and you'll find bunches of traditional tunes.

Well Lyle, I mentioned Hardanger fiddle to Connie, but she and I are working about 4th hand here so I don't know. We ran a thread on that awhile back that I probably should link here, but a big thanks Lyle....Keep an eye on this thread, the real searcher is supposed to check in......I hope.

Here is a site that may get you started.

http://norwaves.com/norwaves/audio.htm

You'll have to copy and paste, but I listen to it every once in a while, and there is pretty good stuff.

Thanks for the help, Spaw!

It also occurred to me that three places that should have lots of information are St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, Concordia College in Minnesota, and Luther College in Iowa. All three have strong Norwegian departments, and St. Olaf used to (last checked about 3 years ago) have a Norwegian folk music group.

Good luck!

Damn Carol! JC's place!!! Of course!!! Never gave it a thought although it's being referenced around here all the time. Didn't even think about it. Shows how dumb I am don't it? Geez....If you look in the dictionary, my picture accompanies the description of moron.

You are wonderful Carol!!! I take back all the accordion jokes..........well, wait a minute.......Okay, I take back at least half...okay, three quarters........alright, all but a couple. One anyway.......

Thanks Carol. And thanks for the Hardanger site Rolfy.

Ya' know the more I think about it the dumber I feel. As a matter of fact, I can hardly believe I'm this freakin' dense!!! (Dense? Yes, I'd love to...Waltz or Polka?)....Even after Sorch found all the polkas at JC's it still didn't dawn on me to check for Norway. This old age thing is killing me........Oh brain cells, where art thou.........

I don't know if I'm much better off than you in the brains department, Spaw. It took me more than five hours to figure out that I could enter the name of a country into the search box instead of the name of a tune.

On the other hand, I think my best Christmas present this year is what I found after I found the Norway stuff. I've hit the Finnish music motherlode! I'm gonna have a whole lot of new tunes to learn this year and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm the "real searcher." Thank you all for your help on this. A very good friend of mine has been looking for any sheet music of Norwegian origin. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this. Thanks again! :)

Actually, I hadn't discovered you could put in a country at JC's either. I knew you could put in waltz, jig, etc.
