Hoping one of the linguists in Mudcat can help. I edit a small newsletter and wanted to write across the top "Happy New Year" in Irish. And by the way, Happy New Year to all my fellow Mudcatters from whom I have learned all kinds of interesting things and enjoyed immensely!

Maryrrf, how about "Athbhliain faoi mhaise dhíobh go léir!". That's probably the simplest way to put it.

I played in Kildare, Ireland about eight years ago on New Years Eve and the only phrase I heard repeated that night was "Willyebehavinanotherdropoporter" so it might be that.

If you are feeling particularly expansive you could toast your friend(s) with, "Talamh gan cíos agat, bean ar do mhían agat, leanbh gach bliain agat 's bás in Éirinn!" The really witty ones amongst us can of course, make up their own original toasts. Maybe we'll even see some of them here yet!(BG)
