Subject: 2002 Omens of the new year?
From: Chip2447
Date: 04 Jan 02 - 04:32 PM

Four days into the new year and already the omens begin to point to a shitty year for me. On January 2nd my girlfriend left me, and today I broke my glasses, so if there are any typos in this message please understand.
Not that I'm terribly superstitious, knock on wood, but I gotta wonder. Cowinkydink? Anyone else seeing signs of something other than a "normal" year? And has anyone got any suggestions to turn my karma around?
Wishing everyone a better year than I seem to be having. Chip2447

I'm sorry.

Think of your girlfriend leaving as a chance for a new start (I know it doesn't feel like that now)

Chance for a new pair of glasses too!

I would say that the probability of event #2 went WAY up after event #1. Suspect that you'll be back on an even keel real soon - and who knows what doors will open.

Which is not to say - don't worry about knocking on wood - because it can't hurt - after all - there are still a lot of wooden doors out there.

MMario is right, but, alas, the probability for the opposite of event #1 (finding a new girl friend) does not increase in a similar way after the opposite of event #2 (getting new glasses) has happened. I'd try the new glasses first, it's easier from my experience.

Well, yeah, if you get new glasses first, it'll be a lot easier to LOOK for a new girlfriend!!! ;^)

...which will be a lot more fun than looking for bad omens!

Chip, don't let a couple of bad experiences ruin the entire year for you. We'll let you feel sorry for yourself through the weekend, but come Monday, that's it, no more.

Seriously, I'm sorry to hear about your break-up with your girlfriend, and I hope you will find a girl who will turn out to be your soul mate. Till then, our virtual shoulders are here to lean on.

Sharon

Look for a new girlfriend before you replace the glasses.
Your chances of success are higher as they all look good with blurred vision.
You reckon you've got bad luck? If it was raining nymphomaniacs I'd get washed down the gutter with a tranvestite !

Oh John, I know how you feel... if the world were a foot deep in shit, I'd fall in head first.....

Just keep saying that things can only get better.... honestly!!!

Try a change of image with the new specs.... a different type of frame. I did, and it made a whole heap of difference - I can look disapprovingly over the top of them, and my friend Jean says it's cute! Michelle says it's scary though, so you can't win everytime....

Now where did I put that chocolate ???

Okay, I'm not gonna bite a bullet or anything. Cloned eyeballs mite be nice though. Ah, well. Inspirations for the creative processes. Probably at least a short poem, or a blues song in the mucked up karma.

"Since my baby left me,"...
Wait, that one has been done.
Thanx folks,

No reason to assume any event is going to extend its flavour into a whole year!! You're getting the rough stuff out of the way first, which is the best approach. From March to December, there won't be any nasties in the queue. If you believe in fate's queues, which I don't.

I'm with Amos - after all if someone said do you want the good news or the bad news first I'd always go for the bad first, and get it out the way!

I started off on the wrong foot too, being diagnosed with angina on the 3rd, but it sort of re-enforces the resolution to lose weight and put myself under less stress this year - so maybe I could turn it into a good thing!

My glasses broke at the end of last year too! I have stuck them together with elastoplast and that is how they will stay until I can afford a new pair! It makes people laugh when they see them, and that HAS to be good for them doesn't it?

Hope things soon start to go better for you, but my mum always said these things come in threes!!!!!!!!
Happy New Year!
Cheers, Lucy

Chip there is no such thing as "omens" to tell you how your year will go. Forget the karma crap too. Sorry, but none of that mumbojumbo is real. Lets face it - these 2 things happened. That's it. Go on with life with new doors open now. Knocking on wood won't do you a bit of difference.

No such things as omens? None of that mumbojumbo is real? What will the weather forecasters and the voodoo economists do once made redundant when the word gets out?

Weather forecasting is an exact science - not pulled out of someones vivid imagination. How can you possibly use that analogy?

Dismissing karma and omens in the same breath is kinda like those who assert that our civilization really sucks while drying off from a hot shower and getting the morning news on the radio.

Well, Amos, the nice thing about not believing in karma is that you can never be proven wrong. That is, until your next lifetime!

Aloha,
Mark

An exact science you say? *I've* got an Exact Science degree from the Ayn Rand Academy of Weather Forecasting. It came in the mail for Christmas.

I notice you didn't mention the economists. I thought you rational objectivists loved the economists.

An exact science. Gives me a real chuckle. Ya gotta love that one.

Mark:

I hear you -- it's kind of like becoming a Christian just at the last hour, "just in case". :>)

I have never bought the whole body of beliefs about karma, as it is taught by various Hindu masters. But the simple reality is that your choices in ordinary life have a powerful feedback effect on the way you see and experience the world. And if there is such a thing as the survival of beings across from one lifetime to another it kinda makes sense that you don't change your skies by changing your body anymore than you can run away from personal problems by moving across a state line.

It also makes sense that those most able to reach, communicate, perceive, and express deep affinities, for example, will be those who have done the least to immerse themserlves in regret, problems, hatreds or secrets, because those things tend to reduce the free ability to communicate. Probably, I would assume, they would be the ones also most likely to be able to survive a lifetime transition with the least unconsciouosness. Assuming there is such a transition.

If that is what is meant by "karma" then I can only say it seems right to me, and something that looks a lot like it seems to be at work in ordinary lives, let alone multiple lifetimes.

But that's just one opinion....

Kind of explains "my karma ran over my dogma" doesn't it, Amos? *bg*

Mark, you're right, it is no joke.

Skarpi, thanks for the alf and faerie stories.
